DS is almost 6.5 months. Started solids about 3 weeks ago. Not doing grains until at least 9 months - so far he's LOVED avocado and pear, likes carrots and bananas and definitely dislikes peas and sweet potatoes. To the point where he won't eat the last two at all. I am making all his own food - which would you suggest trying next? I plan to try peaches and apples soon in terms of fruit but what is a good next veggie that isn't too strong a taste and isn't too constipating and relatively easy to digest? Maybe zucchini?
-
I was going to say squash or zucchini. They are both really mild veggies and my LO loved them. Plus, they are easy to prepare. I made my own foods too and they are easy fixes.
-
Great - I was thinking that and picked up an organic zucchini at the market just before. So should I keep peel on, steam and puree (and then freeze of course)? Any better way of preparing?

That is how I always prepare DS's food. I think it keeps the nutrients in the food the best. He LOVES zucchini and squash.

Thanks Jenn!

Peels stay on for zucchini right? Since the majority of the nutrition is there?
-
Not sure about the peel on the zucchini, I peeled ours, however my lo was in tears when we tried them, although he's take them when I mix them with baby rice..:)
I haven't tried making batches of them though, as I've read on several sites that they become watery..!
We've tried banana, apple, sweet potato , pears & zucchini...starting carrots tomorrow.
Can I ask why will you wait till 9 months to start grains?
Cheers,

Because IMHO the baby cereals, especially rice, (1) are very lacking in nutrition, (2) don't taste very good and most importantly (3) are hard to digest. There is a fair amount of research showing that babies lack amalyse, the enzyme necessary to digest grains, until closer to a year.

I really wish I had known this. Especially, since it turns out that wheat was an issue for my LO and his cereal had wheat in it. I will definitely start with fruits and veggies with my next LO.

Thats what I did. As long as you can puree it enough, the peel didn't bother my DS.

Gave it to DS a bit ago - pureed with peel on. He really seemed to like it - this boy definitely prefers the mild tastes instead of the stronger ones!
-
OK so update here is that DS really likes carrots and zucchini. Likes sweet potato now but seems give him painful gas. Likes butternut squash but made him have horrible night wakings. Hates peas. Thoughts for other veggies to try? He's 7 months old tomorrow. Too soon for pureed cauliflower or broccoli? Was thinking to wait with green beans until he handles finger foods better.

There's a really good website, Wholesome Baby Foods, that goes through all of the fruits and veggies and gives suggested ages to introduce them at. It also gives different ways to cook them!

Loved this site when I was getting started!

I do use and really like that site, thanks - was just looking for personal experience as well!
-
Love the website..!...just started my lo with cauliflower, being cautious however, so am trying not to give it to him everyday.
-
Yazzie - does the cauliflower seem to be making him gassy? Is he normally a gassy guy? I'd really like to start it with my DS but not if painful gas is the result!
-
hey guys! can I jump in? your post made me realize that sweet potatoes may have been the reason my lo was up sooo much the other night. She was extremely gassy throughout the day and night!! Could that mean she's not ready for solids or that veggie isn't suited for her?
great thread!

Hard to say Sarah - how old is your DD?
-
He IS the master of gas...hehehehehe...but I don't really think it did have a negative effect, he only had it on Sunday, didn't seem to have an effect, so will try again tomorrow, as I told you I'm being very cautious & you might want to try to give it to him with something that's tummy friendly, like maybe zucchini.
-
Thanks! Currently trialing egg yolk (hardboiled and mashed with banana) for two more days, then moving onto yogurt but think might go for cauliflower after that.
-
lol..glad I'm not the only one with gas issues!!
she's 6 months :) I'm going to try pureed carrots this aft...maybe I'll have better luck with that! (and less gassy...)
-
Karen, have to ask how old is your lo?..have been considering eggs or yogurt next for my almost 7 months old ds, but was a little hesitant..!..@ Sarah, u r so not the only one..:D...would suggest, though to introduce any new food early in the day, so that your lo's body can deal with it all day & there would be less of a possibility of it affecting night sleep.
-
darn. that's such good advice...I wanted to do carrots this aft, but I'll wait until tomorrow morning!
-
Yeah, gives here a chance to gas as she likes...:)

DS is 7 months today!
