Title: DReamfeed phobic.....
Post by: Richelle on January 02, 2010, 14:14:12 pm

HIya,

My LO is 11 weeks old and we are now having what I would consider some night waking issues, which I am pretty sure are due to hunger but really would appreciate some input before I start trying the dreamfeed.  Please excuse the ramblings, I am tired!!

My first DD was a champ at night and horrid napper but then settled into a pretty rigid EASY (would get OT easily) around 12 weeks.

This DD is very easy since starting on the reflux meds, puts herself to sleep in her crib for all naps, with a pat/shush needed here or there.  I mean if she is tired she will go to sleep on her activity mat with ODD horseing around, TV going ect be moved to her crib and sleep until we have to wake her ususally.

She is EBF and eats every 2.5 to 3 hours, I will usually take a bottle of BM, sometimes formula with me for bedtime feed because I am "drained" at that point.  Last night she had bottles ( we had a bbq yesterday and I had a few glasses of wine) at 6ish (4oz BM) and 8ish-here she would only take 2 oz of formula.  Let me just put down how our days have been ( i have started keeping a journal) . I am back to work on Monday and fear it will all go pear shaped if I don't get a bit more sleep!!! I will put 2 days, just to highlight the differences if and when I feed her.

DECEMBER 31ST:

EAT - 7AM

SLEEP - 8 TO 9:45 (couldn't keep her awake AND had to wake her)

EAT - 10AM

SLEEP - 11:15 TO 12:45 (HAD TO WAKE HER)

EAT - 1PM

SLEEP - 2:20 TO 4 (HAD TO WAKE HER)

EAT - 4PM

SLEEP - 5:15 TO 6PM

EAT - 6:30

BATH - 8PM

EAT - 8:30

SLEEP - 8:45PM

12AM - WAKE (give soother pat to sleep 20 mins-I think she was woken up by the new years fireworks)
1:40AM - WAKE ( give soother pat to sleep 5 minutes)
2:20AM - WAKE (give soother pat to sleep 5 minutes)
4:15AM - WAKE EAT for 5 to 10 minutes right back to sleep,  this is when I start to second guess the hunger thing, if she was super hungry I would think she would feed longer, throughout the day she eats for at least 20-30 minutes.

For these nightwakings she doenst cry but grunts and chews on her hand and cant settle without my help it seems.

NB: I try to treat anything before 3AM as a nightwaking and pat to sleep, she used to easily go 5-6hours and one night last week bed @ 8PM, woke at midnight, patted her to sleep and she slept until 5AM!!  Also keep in mind I would be quite happy to feed her once a night and skip the dreamfeed, it is all the erratic waking in between that is getting hard, which is making me think she is hungry for 2 reasons; she doesn't take a lot at the last feed, 5 minutes at breast or 2-3oz of a bottle and well she is a growing baby!!

7:15AM AWAKE FOR THE DAY.

Jan 1st:

EAT - 7:30AM

SLEEP - 8:45 TO 10:15 (WOKE HER)

EAT - 10:30AM

SLEEP - 12 TO 1:30 (WOKE HER)

EAT - 1:30

SLEEP - 2:45 TO 4:15 (WOKE HER)

EAT - 4:30

EAT - 6:30

BATH @ 7:45
EAT @ 8PM

BED - 8:30PM

11:15 - WAKE (GIVE SOOTHER PAT TO SLEEP 5 MINS)
1:30 - WAKE (GIVE SOOTHER, PAT FOR 30 MINUTES, GIVE UP AS SHE SEEMS HUNGRY)
2:00 - EAT; FOR ONLY 5 MINUTES RIGHT BACK TO SLEEP
5AM - WAKE (GIVE SOOTHER)
5:45  - WAKE (GIVE SOOTHER PAT FOR 5 MINTUES)
6:30 - WAKE (GIVE SOOTHER)

7:00 AWAKE FOR THE DAY

Now I am not totally opposed to the dreamfeed (DH will do it) but I tried for a few days when she was around 7 weeks and it just seemed to make things worse but a lot has changed since then.  I didn;t do it with my first but she would wake like clockwork everynight at 4 for a feed and thats it, so I didn;t mind, I would happy sa if this LO did the same but alas they are different babies so here I am!

Any thoughts or ideas would be so appreciated, if you have made it this far...my gosh this is the longest post EVER!!

I notice that your last A time on both days is significantly longer than earlier A times.  I'm wondering if part of your night waking issue is happening because your LO is getting overly tired in that long stretch before bed, making her night sleep restless.  Is there a way to either work in an additional cat nap or bring bed time earlier?

Hi Richelle!  big hugssss for you!!!   I'm not sure if I have the answer for you but it sounds to me like the soother is becoming a prop?  DS was having lots of NWs for replug and that got me to finally wean him off it.  But then your LO wasn't just satisfied with the soother.  So I'm not totally sure on this.  How long would she sleep if you don't wake her up at 3h?  I hope someone with experience and knowledge will help you soon.

bumping u up

Thanks, I was wondering if overtired was the issue or the soother...but I think it is a bit early for the soother being a prop?? I may be totally off on that though?

She had a good nap yesterday until 630 and had a great night last night, down at 815 up @ 3am down until 630...but also had less daytime slepp before that,  aaaahhhhhhh its enough to drive you crazy no?

if it was just more consistent alll the time!!!!  every 3 hours great, just do that all the time, don't tease me with those 5-6-7-8 hour nights!!

yeah... our nights are still erratic... and i'm soooo exhausted...  i hope it will stay good for you!!  it doesn't seem to be soother.  but i thought i would let DS have it until he could find it himself but around 7 months he was just waking more and more often and i had to wean.  But since then, there are other issues... just never ends :P  good luck!!
