Title: What the WHAT is happening?? Can't get him back to normal!
Post by: JayLeigh on January 30, 2010, 21:52:41 pm
DS is just a few days short of 10 months old.

I don't know what happened, but in a 24 hour period a switch flipped, I know that we need to start the 2-1 transition, as he has had EW last week, however all at once, he started waking every hour to 2 hours, taking short naps. I know he is OT, but I can't get him back to "normal" whatever that is at this point! I am exhausted!!

I should add that he is sitting almost every time I go into his room in the middle of the night or after a short nap, crying and frustrated. He get hysterical if I try and lay him down straight away, I have to pick him up, give him a little pat and "it's OK mama's here" and put him back down on his back for him to settle with his lovey and sneak away, so could part of the problem be he can't or doesn't think to lay himself back down?? Sometimes I also find him standing which is new. Also, because of EWs I was feeding him at around 6 or 6:30 but that started getting earlier and earlier till I was feeding him at 5:30, he would fall asleep and I would get another 1.5 hours out of him. So now, at around 5:30-6:30 he will be standing in his crib crying his "I want to be nursed cry" (a mix between a cry and nervous laugh).

Here's what his schedule WAS

E- 6:30ish BF
E- 8am solids
S- 9:45 - 10:45 (fairly consistantly an hour nap lately which was ok with me given the 2-1 switch)
E- 11 BF
E- 12noon solids
E- 2:15 BF
S- 2:30 - 4ish
E- 5:30 solids
S- 7:00 - 7:30 give or take

Do you bottle or breastfed?? bf
How much? or how long? 4x per day
If breastfed.. one side or both?? both
How many wakes per night? 2-6
What’s your LO like when waking at night? How long is he/she up? cries, ends up in sitting position and gets hysterical if I don't intervene
When you go to him/her is she fussing or crying? Or is it a mantra cry?  starts with fussing, ends up in frustrated crying
What have you tried to settle?? p/s, pu/pd, pd, etc  on a rare occasion (lately), he'll settle himself, I pickup for about 1 minute to calm him, set him back down, and he rolls around a bit to settle himself
What do you do for A time and how long is it?  about 3.5 hrs, though varies based on his naps.  usually we play in the house, or go for a walk in good weather, run errands
Are there developmental issues such as teething or milestones?  Exploring the house on his own, pulling to standing, daddy and I practice walking with him, after spoon refusal NO more baby food.
Do they have a prop? If so what is it? no
Do they have a lovie?  yes

I have read that thread, we are currently starting shortening his morning nap. As far as teething, I really didn't think he was at the moment, he has 7 already, but then I noticed a little bud of one on the bottom. But he hasnt even slept THIS bad because of teething! Last night I gave him ibuprofen right before bed and he slept perfect until 3am. At which point I came into comfort him, and he started pushing off me, I put him down, he cried harder. I picked him up to cuddle/rock him and he started thrashing to get out of my arms! It was like he wanted to throw himself to the floor, COMPLETELY inconsolable, till the moment I put my boob in his mouth!! I don't know eher that came from. I do know that while he is teething, all he wants to do is nurse at night!

Honestly--what you describe does sound like there's a teething component happening.  We ended up doing extra night feeds during teething because DD found that very comforting and I was able to avoid giving her much medicine (which I found comforting, lol), but then it left us with some AP mess to clean up after the teething had passed.  Seems like maybe he woke when the ibuprofen wore off and needed another dose?
