Title: Apples - choking hazard...when did you first let LO have an apple?
Post by: Tweakster on February 22, 2010, 18:59:15 pm
Finn is 11 mths.  The paed and occupational therapist both have suggested I give him a hunk of apple to eat.  But I am really apprehensive.  It's one of the things that really scares me.  He's ok with most things, crackers, bread, pasta, chunks of things, yet I only give him applesauce at the moment.  He has 8 teeth and molars well on the way but I still wonder if he really knows how to chew things really well.

I have given DD slices of apple for a while, she doesn't manage to bite much off, she can have a good gnaw at thicker slices, but when she does she is very good at spitting out what she can't chew/ swallow. A supermarket cafe we go to sells bags of apple slices - keeps her quiet while we eat (or chat over a coffee ;)).

What about peeling an apple, cutting it into slices and microwaving for a while to just soften them a bit so he can gum/ chew what he can. Then when he (you ;)) is used to it make them a little firmer each time. You can work up to giving him pieces just sliced with the skin on.

I was definitely giving DS apple slices by then.  I did peel them and made sure the slices were thin as opposed to thick, that way if he got a big hunk off it wasn't so much choking size, kwim?  I also looked for types that were a little 'squishier' instead of crunchy.  :)

HI there, ok that's good to know :-)  I like the idea of the microwaving for a minute to get soft.  Also I think Braeburn are softer, I think that's why I don't like them because I like my apples crispy lol.  I guess I have to get over my fear!

I must admit I was worried about the same thing as you, Wendy.  But at 14mo check-up, the doctor was telling me off for not giving apples and not letting DS drink from cups, still giving bottles, etc...  So I started giving apples in thin peeled slices, and DS just bites bits off and gum them.  Most times he would swallow.  Sometimes he stuffs himself with a full mouthful (perhaps that gives more tastes) and then spit it all out :P  Probably you don't have to worry too much and let him try with your supervision.

I like my apples crispy too, lol.

DS had 8 teeth by then too so I was never really worried about him chewing things, but I take care of a boy now who only just has 6 and I'm feeding him apple slices as I type!  :)  They do quite well with them.

oh i forgot to mention that DS only has 7 teeth 8-)  not sure why the 8th still has no sign of showing up :P  It's so much fun to watch DS holding the apple slices like a piece of watermelon and gnawing away heehee we have photos :D

DD only has two bottom teeth (and a little sharp bit broken through today ;D) but does just fine chewing and gumming!

Ok you ladies have given me the confidence...of course I will probably wait until DH is home but I think we shall start.  It's pretty much the only thing he hasn't had yet.

If it makes you feel even better, my DD did not even get her FIRST tooth until 13 months old, and she was eating/gumming apple slices by then.  Peeled and sliced thin, like pp's have mentioned.

My dd had 4 teeth at 12 months, before a year I gave her apple but I peeled it and cut them super thin and long, like the shape and size of McDonald's fries, and she never choked on them.

I started giving DS apples when he was cutting his first teeth at 8 months. By 12 months he was regularly having an apple a day, with just his two top and two bottom teeth.

BUT I have NEVER given him slices or chunks of apple -- from 8 months it's been an entire (peeled) apple in his hand.  Even now at 19 months I won't give him quarters or pieces of apple, too scared he'd bite off a large chunk and choke, but with a whole apple in his hand, there is a limit to how much he can get in his mouth and how much he can bite off at one time.  KWIM?  He will eat an entire apple just as an adult does, but it's always itty bitty tiny bites he gets at once!

Here's a pic, this was 13 months old:

LOL Mashi, cute pic!  I give T his apples whole now too, takes him an hour to eat it but it keeps him busy!  ;)  Started doing that ever since we were in the grocery store one day and he helped himself to an apple and took a bite before I could take it away!   ::)

Great ideas!  I actually held the apple for him yesterday and let him bite because I was kind of thinking along the same lines...he seemed to think that was quite the fun activity lol

oh my mashi!!  what a good idea!  But then i have no tolerance to sticky little wet hands hmmm  and DS will drop it... and i don't allow food once dropped on the floor to be eaten... hmmm

Is it really bad to admit that DS has never had apple as I'm scared of the same thing!! Lol.

He quite happily eats pear slices/chunks straight from the fridge but I always think of apple as being so much harder.

Perhaps I'll just bite the bullet and give him a peeled apple for his snack this afternoon!

Hi girls! I too gave my LO apples whole at 12 mos- we went apple picking and he just helped himself- peel and all- same sort of thought that Mashi had, I guess, that the apples were so large, he just sort of gnawed on it at first- shearing off small amounts and not really "biting" a huge chunk. That being said, you know your LO's abilities and some kids aren't ready for that by 12 mos, and others are.
We also went through the, Take a HUGE bite, chew it up and SPit it out phase here too!
Love the photo!

Well it was interesting.  He examined it for about 5 mins lol, then used it as a bowling ball.  I let him eat stuff off the floor though so I picked it up and gave it back lol  Then showed him how to eat it.  He took a bite (as shown in the pic) then threw it on the floor again.  Oh yeah and it was after ravioli so all covered in tomato sauce.  Yum lol.

Then I cut some up ala McD's fries and he wasn't sure what to think.

He was actually more interested in the orange I was eating.  *sigh*

I'll try again another time hehe.

Yep, lots of bowling balls here, too!!  One of the reasons I like apples so much is that they are SO easy to just pick up and run under the water and carpet-fluff-be-gone!

One of the reasons why apples are/were so appetizing here is because we always present it as MY apple or DH's apple, and does he want some?  I need to take the first bite to start him off with a place to get a tooth grasp (iykwim?) and so he sees it as my apple right from the beginning and then wants some. Every so often when he gets "stuck" and can't find a place to bite I've got to help out, so it keeps up the charade of it not being his ... and thus sooo much more appetizing!!
