Title: Advice on NW
Post by: Gen_77 on August 03, 2010, 13:55:46 pm
Hi!

My daughter is 3 months old and weighs about 14 pounds. She eats between 30 and 35 oz a day. She has been a good sleeper, and has slept through the night (6 p.m. to about 5 a.m.) three times on her own.

Last week, I stopped the night feedings and started to give her the pacifier instead in order to have her sleep through the night.

Here's her day schedule (roughly):

5:30 - feeding
6 to 7 - activity
7 to 8 - nap
8:30 - feeding
9-10 - activity
10 -11 - nap
11 to 11:30 - activity
11:30 - feeding
12 to 12:30 - activity
12:30-1:30 - nap
1:30 to 2:30 - activity
2:30 - feeding
3 to 4 - nap
4 to 5:30 - activity
5:30 - feeding
6 - bedtime

For the past week, this is how it's gone:

Night 1 - Wakes around 1 a.m., give her her pacifier. Wakes around 3, have to giver her her pacifier a few times, then falls back asleep until 5:30.

Night 2 - Wakes around 2, giver her her pacifier. Wakes around 4, give her her pacifier a few times, falls back askeep until 6:15.

Night 3 - Wakes at 11:30 p.m., 1 a.m., 2 a.m., 3 a.m., 4 a.m., 5 a.m.!

Night  4 - Wakes at midnight. Takes about 45 minutes for her to get back to sleep, and I get up 4 or 5 times to giver her her pacifier. Wakes at 2 a.m. My husband gets up once to give her her pacifier, and she falls back asleep. Wakes at 4:45. This one is tricky - my cut-off is 5 a.m. (for now). I decide not to feed her and give her her pacifier. We do so a few times. She sleeps twice 12-15 minutes. At 5:45, we feed her.

Night 5 - Wakes at midnight. Give her her pacifier once. Wakes at 2 a.m. Give her her pacifier once. Wakes at 5:40 and I feed her.

Night 6 - Wakes at 11:30. Give her her pacifier once. Wakes at 1 a.m. Takes 30 minutes to get her back to sleep, have to get up to giver her her pacificier 4 times. Wakes at 4:30. Get up a few times to giver her her pacifier. Wakes at 5:30 and I feed her.

Things have been improving a bit, but it seems to be taking longer than I expected. Any advice?

Hi there, is it possible she's really hungry?  They have so many growth spurts in the first 6 mths.  She may be soothed by the pacifier and the sucking but if she keeps waking up I wonder if she's just genuinely hungry?  We had 2 night feeds until nearly 5 mths.

We'd a really big growth spurt at 3 months too.   I think she could be hungry.  We still had 2 night feeds at 3 months (I bf'd) one night feed for a good while after.  Are you bfing or FF?

At 3 months going from 5.30pm to 5am without a feed is tough going for some LOs even if they are eating a lot in the day especially with all the growth spurts.   Do you do a dream feed?

I would prob feed at first NW and then resettle for next few hours until offering to feed again.

HTH x

I agree with everyone else - 3 mo is far too soon for LO to be able to have no night feeds.
