Title: not sure if my son really needs the night feed?
Post by: yummymummy24 on August 08, 2010, 19:48:36 pm
hi, im wondering if someone can help me? my ds is 15 weeks old today and last night i fed him at 22.30, he only took 2 oz but had drank quite well in the day especially for him anyway he normally wakes up after 4-5 hrs for next feed  around 3.30-4 am after dream feeding 10.30-11. last night he didnt wake untill 5.05 am  and had 2 1/2 oz at 5.30, he wasnt crying and seemed quite happy with his dumy, but he wouldnt settle back off sleep untill hed been fed then he went back off. (hes goes slep fine usually just with a dummy though) he then fed at 9.25 am after that.

hes done this a few times now a few nights ago, in between hes been waking and crying to be fed then last night he went longer thannormal in the night and he didnt seem fussed about his milk. hes started to take more milk this past few days too during the day. what do you think/sugest?

At 15 weeks it would be VERY unusual to not need a night feed. I wouldn't plan to stopit just yet.

hi, well last night he stirred at 2.30 and 4 am but he settled back off with the dummy, no crying or fussing, he then stirrred around 6am and wasnt settling back off (not that i expected him too, i just wanted to see how long he would go before 'asking' for his milk) so i fed him at 6.40 and he only took 2 1/2 oz and a 10 min breast feed, 5 mins before and 5 mins after bottle but refused any more of the bottle. he then went back sleep and is stilll asleep now! im councious about letting him sleep in too late incase it affects his bedtime? which is 7.30-8 pm

im not sure what to do now really, should i feed him at 6 of he does the same again or should i feed him when he stirs in the night? should i do dreamfeed earlier or try dropping it so he wakes earlier for feed so it dosnt mess with the day feeds, maybe ifd he fed at 6 though hed then want feeding again at 9 and that would be ok as thats normal for him.

but i dont want him getting into routine of 9.30 pm- 9.30 am again as he was like that before i started geting him up earlier and hen bed earlier.

any sugestions? thanks

You want to aim for a 12 hour day and 12 hour night, so I would recommend waking him depending on what time he went to bed.

It's hard to answer without knowing your daily routine. Do you want to post it in EAS format?

thanks, last night was different again! he woke at 3 (after dream feed at 10.40) and wanted feeding then again at 5.30 then 7 so i think hes still a bit changable at the moment, heres a day from last week-

e 6.45 10m breastfeed (sleep tilll 8)
a p;ay
e 9am 4.5 oz
a wash dressed play
s 10am 30 mins
a play
e 11.20 5 oz
a play
s 13.30 50 mins
e 1430 5 oz
a play
s 15.29 for 2hrs 25 mins but thars unusual, he was in his swing i woke him up in the end
e18.00  2oz
out shopping
e 21.30 3 oz
sleep
e 3.10 2.5 oz
e 6.20 2.5 oz

i dont knpw what tothink as he waswaking 2 hrly for feeds a short while back now hes settled more but still changable, maybe it depends what kind of day hes had.

No two days are ever going to be exactly the same (well it's pretty rare anyway!), and that's okay, totally normal. Remember that it's a routine and not a schedule.

Likely he was having a growth spurt!
