Title: Totally confused!
Post by: sensfan on September 07, 2010, 14:27:43 pm
DD just turned 4 months old, and still wakes up at least once a night (except for 2 beautiful nights almost a month ago). She used to wake around 4:30, BF and went back to sleep until 7/7:30. I've been fairly worried about turning into a prop, and I wonder if that's starting to happen. She's been waking up earlier, often between 3:30 and 4:00, and I'm never really sure if she's taking a full feed. I waited a week and tried to feed a little more often when this started to see if it was a GS, but wound up fighting a nursing strike instead (which seems to have mostly settled down).

Last night here's what happened. She woke up around 2:00, but settled herself (I think she may have been a little OT at bedtime). Then she woke up again at 3:15, wasn't full-on crying so I thought I'd see if she'd settle again, started to ramp it up a little by 3:30, so I thought I'd try to settle her. Needless to say that didn't work. Then DH complains that he has 12 meetings today and a raging headache, and why can't we just give her the soother if I won't feed her  >:(. (She doesn't go down with the soother, falls asleep on her own for the most part, still sleeps in our room). I gave her my finger to suck on while I talked to him, then since it was almost 4:00, I just put her to the breast. (Also have to say at this point that it's not always easy to tell if she's hungry, since during the day she pretty much shows NO hungry cues. She's so laid back, and at the beginning she was so sleepy that I was always waking her up to eat, and now I pretty much just feed her when she wakes up. When she was crying she wasn't burrowing into me or anything like that.)

We were still talking while she was on the breast, but I could tell she wasn't exactly wolfing it down. Took her off to see if she was settled, and she started screaming again, but wouldn't go back on! So worn down between the 2 of them at this point, I just gave her the soother. I kept trying to let her suck for a minute or two and take it out, but she kept fussing every time I did. Getting on to 4:30 now, so I gave up and just let her keep it  :(

I was sure she'd end up waking up in another hour since she didn't really eat, but she stayed  sleeping until 7:45! So here's what I'm wondering now: does this prove she doesn't need the night feeds, and is just waking out of habit? Am I a giant soother?Would she have woken sooner if she was hungry? Or was she just so tired from this whole kerfuffle that she slept?

We're in the middle of switching to a 4 hour EASY, so this is a little fluid. This was how yesterday went:

7:45 wake up, BF
9:35 sleep
11:15 wake up, BF
1:05 sleep
2:45 wake up, BF
4:40 sleep
5:45 wake up, BF
7:30 eat and bed, was asleep by 8:00
10:45 DF

She was definitely a little bit OT at bedtime last night. She woke up at 2:15, but settled herself. Woke up again at 3:00, settled for 20 min but woke up again, settled until 4:30 at which point I decided to feed her. Hard to tell how well she did, but she did sleep until 7:30 this morning.

Today hasn't gone as well nap-wise.

7:30 wake up, BF
9:30 sleep
10:45 woke up, tried to settle
11:00 BF
12:45 sleep
1:45 woke up, tried to settle
2:15 BF
3:15 put her down, asleep by 3:40

We'll see how the rest of the day and night goes. Wish I knew for sure if she's hungry at her NWs...
Thanks for your help!
