Alyssa is three weeks old and this girl grunts when she sleeps at night. She especially has a difficult time settling between 4am-6am.
Is this normal for a new baby?

Hi Sabs. I'm about to post about my own night issues but all three of mine would grunt. DS 3 does it often - not quite as loudly as during the first few weeks. It's worse when setting back to sleep and in the wee hours. He's often pushing his legs down too - I think to pass gas. But it goes on for ages. I sometimes end up with him falling asleep on my chest.

Brodie was a grunter when he slept, still is in fact. he went into his room at 8 weeks purely for that reason! It drove me batty. ;)
Not too sure about the 4-6am thing. Bubs do come into a lighter phase of sleep around this time so perhaps it that but really not sure honey. ???

I have had two grunters - they both grew out of it around 14ish weeks. DD was worse, along with the grunting she used to slam her legs down on the mattress - that was fun ::). DS would start around 4am and grunt for a while then pass wind, settle for a short while then start the grunting all over again.
I have two refluxers so I'm not sure if it was related to that or just newborn digestive system.

as far as i am aware grunting in sleep is one of the signs of reflux...al mine grunted until they got on the right meds :-[ is your lo showing other signs of reflux...does lo breath smell :P i am sure i have read that you suspected reflux?????????????????????

DS grunted until he was nearly 3 months old, I used to pick him up in the first few weeks thinking he was awake, but ended up actually waking him when he was asleep! DS2 grunted just as bad, from my experience she will grow out of it after a couple of months :)

Can be normal - especially for a very windy baby.
Megan is settling from this point of view, but will still be very wiggly if she has lots of wind.
I remember DS being the same and it settled sometime between 3 and 4 mths. So did the 4am restlessness.

My DS is colicky and he grunts when he's gassy. He's been like that since he was a couple of days old, I even remember asking my HV if its normal lol. When I think about it he's not grunting as much as he used to, he's 9 wo, but having said that I also realise that he grunts more at around 6 am. It really puzzles me as to why it's always at that time.

My LO grunted too until I decided to let her sleep on her tummy - which they say increases the risk of SIDS. She slept MUCH better this way though, and looking back I'm really glad I did it. I was terrified though...

I've heard that letting them sleep on their tummies that LOs sleep much better, but I'm petrified to try it with my DS.
