Title: Help with 13 month olds naps please!!
Post by: mamerpp on December 17, 2010, 23:09:40 pm
Hi all
Hope I can explain this right!
DD is just gone 13 months and Im having problems with her nap getting progressively shorter and its now just 40 mins. She's a great night sleeper so really shouldn't complain but she's wrecked from the short naps plus Im worried it'll start to affect the nights at some stage. And its WAY too short for me!

I work 3 days a week and went back to work 2 months ago, DD (and DS, 3) are in a creche/nursery. I had no problems before creche except that she has always been a light sleeper. The creches rountine is different to mine and this is part of the problem, but its unlikely to change.

Her rountine with me on my 2 days a week off and at weekends is as follows: (its been the same for months now)

7 -7.30 Wake
8 Breakfast
8.30 - 10.30 A and drop DS to playschool at 10
10.30 - .... used to always be to 12/12.30 so 1hr30+ now 40-55mins (She always shows signs of being tired at exactly 10.30)
13.00 Collect DS from playschool
13.20 Lunch
13.30-15.30 A
15.30 - ....used to be second sleep of around an hour now she usually skips it altogether or will go into cot and just chat for 30-45 mins
17.30 Dinner
18.00-18.45 A
18.45 Bottle and bed at 19.00

This routine is very set and had been happening for months now

Since she started in the creche she has not slept well there but was still fine at home but now she's not sleeping well here either. I dont mind about her afternoon nap as would expect her to drop this around now (I think?!) but as she is not sleeping well in the mornings she's wrecked all day.

Creche routine is as follows

7.00 awake
8.00 drop off in creche
8.10 Breakfast
8.30-11.45 A
11.45 Dinner
12.30 - ... almost always 50-55 mins recently its 40 mins
13.10-14.30 A
14.30 snack/tea
14.45-16.00 A
16.00 snack
16.30-17.30 A
17.30 pick up

Evening as above - bottle and bed at 19.00

One day last week they could not get her to go to sleep at all!
I did ask them to put her down at the usual 10.30 which they did for a while but she still didnt sleep very long. They say she doesnt seem tired then and I know it doesnt really suit them til after lunch.

They try a second nap too most days put it never works.

Sorry for such long post hope I've made it clear! Any ideas on what to do about her 40 min naps! She goes down no fuss at all and goes straight to sleep but wakes crying and grumpy... Thanks so much!!

Oh and we did go through a bad EW phase but that was more caused by DS EW and then disturbing her. Afraid to say it but that seems to be gone in recent weeks.

Is she sleeping through the night - looks like 12hrs or sometimes a little more?

Perhaps on your days off and weekends you could do one nap around 11.30am and see what happens?

Thanks very much henry for the bumb and babybarr for the reply! Realise it was hard to read through all the question never mind reply!! Definitely think you're right about the 11.30 sleep babybarr, will try that over Christmas. Just writing it all done and reading other questions and answers has made me understand it all a lot better so fingers crossed we'll get her back on track at home anyway.
Thanks again girls!

I was going to say the same thing  as Laura sweetie, at around this age my DS did a HUGE leap in A times in the morning and I couldn't work out why everything was "off"...he clearly needed more sleep than he was getting but wouldn't take more.  His nap time over the next 6 months or so got later and then strangely at around 2yo it pulled back earlier again, it's amazing what development and growth can do to sleep needs.

I found that I would give my LO a fairly substancial morning tea snack for a long time as lunch always sort of got missed during this period.

Also bear in mind that your LOs tired signs may be changing and although she may appear to be tired quite early she can work through that a little, a change in activity can really help to get them through till that later nap!

Good luck sweetie
