Title: night feeds
Post by: chell on February 05, 2011, 10:17:14 am
HI, I wondered if  any one had any ideas about my lo's NW. He is angel in personality and I must admit I haven't worked much on his routine and more gone with the flow. He is roughly on a 4 hour EASY, although the late afternoons don't fit the picture quite so well. He generally gets himself to sleep for naps. His feeds are short and always have been I think he is quite efficient at feeding. We started solids at about 5 months and he is now 6 months and that is going well. But he is still waking for night feeds. I remember my first sleeping through (10-12 hours) from 6-7 months ( he was touchy/tex/spirited) but I did work very hard on his routine, and he was starting formula around that time, so not sure if that would make a difference? ))

When H was around 3 mths he was gradually sleeping longer and did sleep for 12 hours on a couple of occasions. He now wakes 1-2 times, but nearly always at different times and does seem genuinely hungry, he goes straight back to sleep, so I  know that this may not seem like too much of a problem compared to some peoples posts, but wondered if you think he should not really be waking to feed at night, or any tips on getting him to sleep through, or if my expectations are too high?

here is his routine:

E - 6am BF
A - 2 hours
S - 8am (Varies - 1-2 hours)

E - 10am BF
A -
S - 12pm ( 1-2 hours)

E - 1.30 solids (sometimes a little milk feed straight after)
A
S -2.00 (1 hour)

E -3.00 BF
E - 4.00 solids
A- 3 hours
S- none

E-6pm BF
A-none
S-6.20

thanks!xxx

BF babies often continue with night feeds longer than FF babies.  I am sorry I don't have time to write much more.  I will check back on you tomorrow.

Thanks Kara, maybe it is because he is still BF. I would like to continue to BF, but what about if his lsat night feed was formula? Do yo uhtink it might be ok to mix the 2, and do you think it woudl make any difference, or do you think all feeds woudl have to be formula?

You absolutely can mix formula and breastmilk in the same bottle.  I did this with DD2 who is now 5 mo until about a month ago when I decided not to nurse but wanted her to have breastmilk.

The one big thing to keep in mind is that you need to prepare the formula as per instructions using water, and not breastmilk as your source of liquid.  Then, you add the BM to the prepared formula to the desired level.  So, if you want a 7 oz bottle, you would prepare say 4 oz of formula, then just add the BM on top of that and shake.

HTH and I hope it helps him STTN.  There are a lot of us on here who wish kid #2 would follow the same sleeping patterns as kid #1 ::)

We still had one night feed (sometimes 2) at six months. If he  is wakening at different times and is eating and then going back off to sleep I'd say you are right and he is genuinely hungry so I go ahead and feed him.  While not ideal lots of BF babies still take night feeds at this age. A DF and one night feed is not unusual so 2 nightt feeds if you don't DF would still be ok. You could try resettling him without feeding and see  does he go back to sleep (and stay asleep) and that may help.

I'm not sure if introducing a FF would help with the longer sleep...I've heard mixed reports!! Some say it has helped, others say it has made sleep worse.  hard to know.

Thanks Shiv, I think if as you say it's normal, I'll just keep going, just wanted to make sure I'm not doing the wrong thing.

Hi Jessica! Yes Harrie  (boy) was born on 1st August. He is really FAB! He is the complete opposite in personality to Jacob, can't believe my luck to have an angel! (not that I'd change Jacob for the world!)  We had lots of probs before him, m/c's and lost a little girl at 6 1/2 months pg at Christmas 2008. It is so lovely to have another LO and a brother for J.
How's Colin and how are you doing? - I see you are "Queen B" ! Can't believe the number of your posts!

I remember the m/c but I guess I missed you being pg! Congratulations, I'm so happy for you!!
We're good :)  The number of my posts is pretty appalling isn't it? When I get addicted, I get addicted!

If you're worried you can try resettling first before feeding but the different timings of wakenings and taking a full feed makes me think he is hungry and the fact he's goiing back to sleep too.

Thanks Shiv, I have tried to make sure he's had lots of food/milk during the day today, and mixed extra expressed milk in with his solids, so am hoping that might help. I think i will carry on and feed him, cos I htink you're right about him being hungry.xx

Hi,

We were still doing a DF at 6 months (in fact weaned it arund 8 months I htink). If you don't do a DF I think it is probably quite normal to have 1 NF still. Plus there is a growth spurt around then too!

Ah yes Buntybear - 6 month growth spurt! You could be right there. He woke twice last night, even with extra milk in his solids, so maybe that's it. He goes to bed early - 6pm, so when he wakes 2-3 am, I guess 8 hours is really "going through the night". Fortunately I'm not going back to work for another 6 months, so I'm not panicking yet!
I see your lo is allergic to milk and egg - so is Jacob (6 year old).

8 hours is good going! Have you thought about a DF? olly only dropped his NFs about 2 weeks ago!

Interesting Jacob still has those allergies. Is there still a chance he could grow out of them?

Hi, I did try a DF a while back, but for some reason it didn't seem to help him to sleep longer - that's always puzzled me.
Well done Olly dropping the NF! Harrie went through the night last night 7-5.30 which was fab! I put extra milk into his solids (from the feezer, not from expressed that same day) so maybe that helped, we'll see.

I'm still ever hopeful for Jacob and his allergies. Although as time goes on it becomes less likely that he will out grow them. He has to be re tested when he is 8 years old. There was some slight improvement when he was tested at 4 years, so you never know.

Chell, the DF never helped us either, so we didn't do it.  I think you will find that your LO will start doing longer stretches more consistently.  I am glad you had a good night and I hope it continues!

Great news about the 7-5.30! I know lots of Mums with older babies have 5.30am feeds then they both go back to bed for a bit longer  :D
So he isn't tested between 4 and 8 years old? Wow, what if his allergies go at 5 and he stays off it till 8? Ohh these allergies are such a pickle aren't they.  :P

Harrie slept a lot today, and didn't eat as much as he should have done, so I'm not sure he'll sleep well tonight!. J has chicken pox, I hope little Harrie isn't going down with it.

I think because the improvement from his last blood test (RAST) was so small, they didn't think it worth it, and also apparently, development of the immune system is rapid in the first few years, but when they get to 4yrs it slows down a lot, and slows again at 8 yrs, so there is not much point. If by 12 he is still allergic, I am going to look into de-ensitisation.x
