SO DS got his first batch of playdoh today. Doesn't know quite what to do with it but I guess its a learning curve. Quite a good activity for us to engage in together....nowhere near ready to go at ti by himself. ( The dog has eaten a fair bit today! )
So now all the colours are mixed up. Its just me, I find it annoying. The OCD part of my personality cant handle it! :P
I have tried to make a game of putting the colours together but to no avail ( he's just learning colours). Do I just have to accpet that they playdoh will forever be a mesh of mixed up colours?!
I have just spent a fortune on playdoh and now its all a ball of mixed-up-ness. ;)

Then we do rolling and cuting etc etc
Why didn't I think of this...now the playdoh is all ruined! >:(

hahaha!! Same thing here! I think that since it's 'his' toy really, he can do whatever he wants with it. Playdoh ends up getting gross after awhile anyway after being dropped on the floor. :P So it's not like it lasts forever.
What about making your own then? It's much more cost effective. If you google it you can find countless recipes, it's soooo easy!
T's playdough is currently this gross yellowy brown colour from mixing yellow, brown, orange, white, and pink! :P

DH and I pretend argue about this all the time. He hates the colors to mix. I, find it very creative and love that DD's favorite thing to do is mix colors into new colors. :) Now, at the age of 2 its more about mess making then actual creativity which is a bit more frustrating but hey, if the kids like it, I don't care one bit. The stuff doesn't last that long anyway because it gets harder to use as it gets older (dries if you put it away quick or not) so we have to replace it anyway.
DS (2) also enjoys rolling the stuff and sticking his fingers in it and making prints with his action figure feet.

All good to know. I was cringing when he was mixing it all up, I just cant bear it!
Might have a go at making my own.....but then I might get even more protective over it!

Don't worry Emma, when you make your own the batches are big enough that Brodie can have some to mix, and you can hoard your own stash. I have some safe and sound in the fridge right now. ;)

I don't like it when the colours mix either - but after many years of playdoh I've learnt that either it's one colour at a time, or its MY problem and not theirs. Since the boys don't do anything 'creative' with needing different colours etc they are more than happy with rolling and cutting despite the mixed colours. I've recently seen an advert for some 'ice cream' parlour thingy and my first reaction was - how are they going to keep the colours pretty.
Making your own is so super easy, so relaxing, I sometimes add glitter to it.
Chocolate boxes are good - making small shapes and putting them in the holes for a chocolate 'factory' keeps them going for ages! Somewhere I've seen a recipe for chocolate flavoured playdough...

We make our own playdough, that way if it gets mixed I'm not as goofy about it. :)

drives me crazy too, but hey if she wants a lump of brownish purplish playdoh, more power to her. (Masyn that is, Spencer won't touch the stuff and runs screaming from it)

They are only allowed one colour at a time here too - I am to OCD for colour mixing! ;D Don't even get me started on the moon sand ;)

oh thank God. i thought i was the only one who *hates* when the colours get mixed up!!!

We buy these lovely things for our children and all they want to do is spoil them by playing with them ::) ;D

I didn't even want to mention the moonsand either. Wonderful stuff though isn't it!?

It's fab stuff - we only use the yellow one at the moment but the Bob the Builder toys come in very handy! The only problem is I have to sweep/ hoover the floor before they use it or I will not be able to put the stuff that falls on the floor backin the tub! I think DH used it with them last......... ::).

DS got moon dough for his birthday, ate a fair chunk of it and had a strange and disturbing squint/blink for 3 days until the dough was out of his system. No idea if it is related or not. Also not sure if it got in his eyes or not. But we're not taking any chances... moon dough and moon sand are banned from our house.

my 21 yo niece just told me that her playdoh always ended up in a big brown blob and my sister had to get her new ones all the time (I think my sis is also OCD) hehe I do one colour at a time and DS isn't really making anything from it yet except to stuff it in a play cup and fling it out with a play fork ::)

I made some playdough for DS and it lasted for ages - I tried adding food dye but it didn't dye (not sure if it was cause I was using past-use-by-date gluten free flour??) -

really simple to make and no cooking involved etc
DS has a selection of cutters and blunt knives etc - he mainly just makes dents in the dough and not a lot else but spends ages playing with it!
The dough keeps forever in an airtight bag (well, ours was made a few months ago and still looked/worked okay but decided to bin it anyway!)

I always give complimenting colours so if it mixes it is still a colour eg red, orange and White. Or blue and green, pink and purple etc.
There is a fab little farm set in ELC which J understood at an early age. Make a field and trees etc.

I hate it when the colours mix. So annoying.
I stick to one colour at a time too.
DD loves breaking up spaghetti and putting pieces in balls of playdoh to make pretend cakes (the spaghetti strands are the candles!). Simple but she loves it.

I let them mix it. I think it's all part of the learning process. But I do think it gets hard sooner when mixed (though I don't know why). For holidays, birthdays, etc I always ask (Grandmas, aunts, etc) for playdough and we just replace it often.
