Title: Wrong teat size?
Post by: *Liz* on February 25, 2011, 21:54:39 pm
I am weaning Megan to bottles, and she accepted it for the first time today (after a 10 hr cold turkey - she had solids as usual though).

She has a really strong suck, and I gave her a fast flow teat since she is 9 mths and I have fast milk, but she necked about 4oz in less than a minute  :o.

What do you think? Too fast, or just a baby getting used to the bottle?

How was she after? Did she puke it back up or did it stay down? I'm assuming she is on a hypo allergenic formula - they tend to be thinner than normal formulas from what I've read so maybe try the medium flow if she's not coping with it. Which bottles are you using - a vari flow may be better but that will depend on the bottle (Avent vari flow are really fast but tommee tippee are really controllable by the baby.)

Be guided by her  - if it's making her windy (or windier in her case ;)) or puke up feeds try a slower one, if she's fine leave it! My two could both drain 8oz in waaaay less than 5 mins by the time they were M's age though - they do get pretty fast!

REALLY glad she took the bottle though! Well done both of you!!

Good on M for taking the bottle!!

When Ben first started on bottles he would guzzle 8oz in under 5 minutes because I had a fast let down. He would be done breastfeeding in just over 5 minutes anyway. I had to have him on the say flow teats or he got very frustrated. Funnily enough as I weaned him completely and he got used to the bottles we had to go down to a slower teat for a couple of months!

Hope she continues to do well with the bottle!

She got VERY windy, but brought it back up easily enough without puking. But obviously her sucking is disorganised as well ATM. That was about 4oz of milk.

I am using a MAM bottle and so no variflow. But I do have a TT bottle and some variflow teats as that was my next plan anyway so I could try that. Obviously the one thing I do not have is a size 2 teat, and nowhere sells MAM teats within a 20 min drive of here  ::).

Currently using EBM while we do a dairy trial on M to see whether we need to take in the horror of neocate introduction or not. I decided that was the best thing to do - no point making things harder than they need to be.

Sounds like she did well!

We used the TT vari-flow for ages with DD, she wasn't overly windy on them and you can get the anti-colic bottles in TT if you haven't got them already. We had to swap to the Avent vari-flow because with the reflux formula she was making the teats collapse ::)

We used the TT variflow for a bit and Ben did quite well on them but I found that because DS had such a strong suck he broke the teats pretty quickly - making the crosses on the top split at each 'corner' IYKWIM?? so then they were just super fast flow!

Just did her bottle now and used a NB teat that I had stuck a pin through - worked much better and the feed of 6.5oz took about 5 mins or so. She did collapse the teat a few times though, so I think she basically needs a size 2  ::) ::).

I think she does need that extra time so she gets some cuddles in as well. The wind was much improved as well.

So I will BF at bedtime now, and the NF, then I should have enough pumped milk for her morning feed.

We are rightly or wrongly going to move to 3 milk feeds at the same time, it is the only way to do it if we want to use EBM to dilute onto formula.

I think b/c you're moving to formula and she is taking solids, moving to 3 feeds is perfectly fine! I know with BF you'd keep them on more, but the formula will likely be more filling and DD moved to 3 bottles right around this age (of her own accord as she was taking basically nothing of her two midday bottles until we combined them and wasn't having any NFs).

So I think it sounds like a good plan to me.

I really hope you don't have to try the neocate. Good luck with the trial!

My DD was on 3 milk feeds from about the same age (certainly not older) because of the reflux and three bottles got her to *just* about the rec 20oz most days. Certainly hasn't done her any harm!

She will do fine on 3 bottles.

DS was on 3 bottles too at this age. He had started nursery and I can remember sending him along with just one bottle to have at lunchtime. I'd do the morning and bedtime bottles at home.

M has made fab progress.  ;D

I'm jumping from a NB teat to a 2 tonight straight in as the teat is collapsing and feeds are taking forever. I'll let you know how it goes.

Right - so M is on bottles of formula all day now - and she collapses a size 2 but splutters and gets mad with a size 3!!

What next?  :P

Extra holes in a size 2??

It took DS a while to adjust to a size 3 teat too.

Time sometimes is all they need I think. B always took a good while to transition teats too, I guess he was a touchy eater you could say. I can remember sitting there at feeds with 2 teats of different sizes swapping them round!  ::)

I think too if you position the bottle just right so that the ressure of the liquid isn't all going straight down. Kind of at an angle but obviously making sure she's not gulping air. I hope that makes just a little bit of sense!

Oh and GO MEGAN!  ;D (and Mummy!)

Don't know what to tell you....DD was on bottles for so much longer she never had that problem. We used those Dr. Brown's bottles with the whole tube contraption thing inside of them. Not sure if that helped or not as if she used any other type of bottle she was fine as well.

They are MAM anti colic bottles. I like the silk teats as my BF babes didn't like the feeling of silicone after being used to a breast. I tried to move J over to Dr Browns with no success, but i haven't tried any other with M.

Having a size 2 and 3 on hand seems sensible - just with MAM a size 2 teat is small and a size 3 bigger (to allow for their little mouths growing).

I really need variflow here don't I  ::) :P?

But yes - it has been an amazing transition for a 9 mth old  ;D ;D

Do MAM do a varilfow? I know the Avent variflow is pants.

I just changed D to a 2 and now its collapsing but the leap from 2-3 is a biggy, with Avent anyways. It was a struggle with B and that was with thickened formula!!

When I did the teat swap thing mid feed he took it alot better. It was a huge PITA but it was like he realised ''wait actually the 3 IS better than the 2 here!'' They get so used to guzzling so hard from a teeny hole that the greedy wee munchkins ned to reteach themselves to be more controlled!!

M might take a change from silk to silicone better than you think. She's been a star so far.  :) :) :)

I started DD straight on a size 3 Dr Brown teat last week - took her a couple of days to stop the milk from spilling out of her mouth but she is doing well with it! Size 2 was taking her ages to drink and she was getting frustrated looking for the breast instead of the bottle!

I feel like, if I am remembering correctly, the nipple size doesn't change on the Dr. Brown's, just the hole size.
