Title: To wean or not to wean
Post by: scucci1979 on March 12, 2011, 18:34:24 pm
Alyssa will be 7months next week and she still has one NF.  She drinking about 24ozs without the night feed and is on three meals a day. Dinner is lighter, usually consists of some toast and fruit.

Should I wean the bottle now or see if she does it on her own?

well I am back again... I am currently weaning O's df. He is now doing 3oz at the df and all other bottles are 7, 7, 6, 7oz. He had a cold right now so isn't eating all of it, but I am planning on sticking with the 6-7oz until I cut out the midmorning bottle.
Hope this helps :)

also wanted to ask, partly for me, how much solids is Alyssa doing at each meal?

thanks.

As for solids: 3tbspn of cereal in the morning. Lunch: 2.5tbspn of veggie + 1tbspn of fruit. I offer some toast or cheerios to keep her busy.  Dinner: fruit or veggie.

ok. I think O is about the same. he is doing about 3tbsp of cereal for breakfast, and then 3 ice cubes for lunch and dinner (I have made food.) Haven't introduced cheerios yet. Wasn't sure if this was too much.

I would certainly think about it - increase her dinner to a proper meal first and then start diluting that bottle. She really doesn't need it anymore  :-* :-*.

Ladies I need some advice!
We went three nights with no Nfs. She did it on her own.  ;D  However, last night she woke up at 5am and she would not settle. I didn't want to start her day then so I fed her 4ozs  and she went back to sleep.  I think I have to increase dinner as she drank 10ozs before bed.  :o  Was that the right thing to do?

Yes - she needs a full evening meal doesn't she?? Protein, carbs etc.

I haven't introduced meats/carbs yet. the only carb I have introduced is toast.

Here is what she ate yesterday:
bottle 7am 7oz
9am 3tbspn of cereal
bottle 12-12:30pm 6oz
1:30pm 3 tbspn of veggies, 1tbpsn of fruit and some toast
bottle around 3pm 4oz
5pm veggie+fruit
bottle 7pm around 10ozs

sabs - what if you spread the bottles out more? like 7oz each? Not sure if that makes a difference or not. It seems O and A are having about the same amount of food. O has 4 bottles of 7oz and df of 3 which I am cutting out and not going to add to the bottles. I feel like the 4 bottles of 7oz are enough, I think.

I recently moved her third bottle before nap b/c she was waking up starving.  But, now she is only drinking 4ozs for that bottle before her nap.

When she woke at 5am did you try and offer water then resettle? That may be worth doing rather than getting into a habit of feeding her that early after your hard work of dropping the NF.

No water. Just tried to resettle. I will try water tonight if she wakes again.

So last night she woke up at 4am and I left her to see if she would settle. She did her mantra cry, fussed and wined for 30mins.  I went to her and tried to pat her but she got more upset. She was doing that cough cry, so I knew she wanted her milk. Hubby wanted me to try weaning this feed by reducing an ounce every three days. ::)  I gave her four ozs and she went back to sleep.
I gave her sweet potato and banana for dinner. Some cheerios were offered later and she still drank 9ozs of milk before bed.  ::)  I wonder if I should try adding some cereal in there or should I just try to wean this feed by reducing the amount.  I am so mad b/c she was doing so well and now we are here again.

I really think you need to give her something to fill her up - and that means either carbs or protein.

So I think i would shift her cereal to dinner time, but also start to try some protein elsewhere on the 3 day rule so that your options start to expand. Fruit and veggies are so low in calories that they will not stop her from being hungry and needing overnight feeds.

Were you planning on starting any meats soon??

Yesterday evening she seemed pretty full as she refused her cereal. Then she drank 11ozs before bed.  :o  I didn't hear a peep until 5am. She settled on her own and woke up again at 6:18am.  I didn't want to start our day then so I tried to AP her back to sleep and then I moved and the floor cracked.  >:(  She woke up so I fed her a little bit and put her back down. I think she snoozed for 10min.
