Arrrrggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That pretty much sums it up.
I'm ready to pull my hair out. Meds don't seem to help my DD and she's up every hour. There are 2 front teeth, just hanging out, taunting me, sitting just below the gum line. They're in no rush to come out. ::)
I've tried Tylenol or Advil and Camilia but the closer they get, the more she hurts.
The poor thing was sucking on my shoulder today when I went to burp her, just trying to ease the pain.
Any other suggestions??
-
I know it just seesm crazy but an amber teething necklace really helped our dd, the first one broke and things got worst again until another came:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Genuine-Baltic-Amber-Teething-Necklace-Honey-UK-/290557251718?pt=UK_Baby_Baby_Feeding_Dummies_Pacifiers_Teething_Aids&hash=item43a68fd086
Funny thing is she still wears it, she loves that necklace :)
It didn't work miracles but we are sure there was an improvement. We also used both paracetomel and ibuprofen but the main thing is we had to make sure we cut A times right down, if we didn't do that nights would be hell, the OT can spiral out of control when teething. When awake we found our dd loved frozen pureed fruit, I made them in lolly molds and would hold them for her if she needed my help, they really helped numb the gums. Bonjela also helped, there is one for teething babies, it was like we needed a full arsenal of ammunition :P Our dd was such a terrible teether that a lot of it was just damage contol not to have an outrageously OT kid after the teeth would finally come through :P
(((hugs)))it is so hrad but I promise one day it will all be a distant nightmare ;D ;)
-
I agree on the amber necklace, they are great! I also find that when they are at the edge of the surface that is when bonjela or orajel works best...it numbs the surface really well!
-
Thanks ladies.
I think I might try those necklaces.
How much should I try cutting her A times down to? She is 7 months and can stay up about 2.50hrs. We were getting so close to dropping the cat nap, but not this week.
-
I really can't remember how much we dropped but it was a fair bit, she napped in her pushchair outdoors or in the conservatory so her winddown was chilling out on her own so I would put her down early and she would fall asleep. Maybe you could try after 2.30hrs?
-
Got the necklace.
So last night we did necklace, camilia and advil and she still woke up 8:15, 10pm (DF), 1:45, 4:08 and then was up for the day this morning at 6. Ugh. THe good news is that we were able to get her back to sleep very fast, in about 2 mins and she woke up this morning happy, so that's good.
However yesterday she was up at 6:15 am but didn't go to bed until 7:22...I'm guessing this was too long of a day? I tried cutting her catnap short by 10 mins, dunno if that did anything. She seemed really cranky after that and we only kept her up an hour and a half after that.
I just don't know how to get her to bed at a decent 12 hour day/time with a catnap. If we drop it she's going to bed at 5:30pm and I'm terrified she will then wake at 5:30 or 5 to start her day! Then what?
Her naps are only about an hour and a half or less, so it's hard to stretch the day out. I have been able to extend her naps, but with the teething going on, once she's up, I think there is too much discomfort to go back to sleep.
Is it normal for teeth to take this long to pop? Other ppl have about 3 bad nights and that's it. We are going on about a week with me being able to see the outline but still not cutting through.
I should add that last weekend after going to the hospital twice in 24 hours, she was finally dianosed with a urinary track infection and spent about 8 hours awake/in pain/crying/fever/shivers and threw up during the night...is it possible that on top of teething she is still having NWs due to OT from last weekend?
She is definitely more comfortable now as she is laughing and babbling during the days so I don't *think* there is abdominal pain anymore, so that would just leave OT and teeth.
Arg.
Sorry for the ramble.
-
The necklace doesn't work instantly ;)
We had terrible teething episodes that would last weeks, in fact we were teething more often than not and dd's teeth took ages to break through and would break through and go back up in the gum, so frustrating, some kids are just really bad teethers :P
I don't think it is possible to do a 12 hr day with a catnap, IMO I would try the 5.30pm bedtime but that is because my dd has always gone to bed early due to being a bad napper, until about 2 months ago she was still going to bed at 5.30pm and she is 4, she stays up late now, 5.45/6.00pm lights out ;D You wont know unless you try but in my experience early bedtime is the only way to catch up on OT.
-
My daughter is 16 months and only has 4 full teeth out and 2 half ones, she teething like crazy right now and I just ended up putting her to bed as nothing will calm her down ( I gave her a frozen teething toy first and even that didn't help). I have had more "bad teething" days then goos in the last 7 months, so HUGS and I fell your pain.
My daughter also does 5:30 BT's, sometime it's 7-7:30pm but that never ends good. When she's teething bad (like today) she will have a long nap and a early BT, it really does cut down on the NWings.
-
Ok, so yesterday was the first time in forever that we didn't have any early night wakings!
She was up at 6 am, 1st nap 8:30 for an 1hr and 50 mins (woo hoo!), which I went in twice to help extend cause she woke at the 30min mark.
2nd nap at 1:30 (3hrs 10 min of A time!) She woke at the 45 min mark but I got her back asleep right away. She then cried 10 mins later and I got her asleep again and stayed in the room out of sight. I accidentaly snapped a photo (twice!) with my cell phone trying to see the time in the dark and woke her again (oops!) at 2:45 but got her asleep again until 3:18!
So no catnap and an early betime of 6:15 pm. We gave her Camilia then too but no Advil as she was so happy through the day.
She woke after 30 mins (is it possible she just thought it was a catnap?) and I was out doing errands.
My DH left her but she got progressively worked up, sobbing. So he gave her Advil and she went out instantly.
He did the DF at 10:15 and she slept until 1:30am....which is when, I'm guessing the Advil wore off... so we gave more.
She then cried at 2am,2:15, 3:22 (gave Camilia) and 3:29 but then slept until 6:30 this morning!
So my questions are
1. Why did she nap so well through the day without meds? Is it b/c it's a shorter time span?
2. Why did she instantly settle once DH gave her the Advil at 6:45 pm but yet it took over 2 hrs to really settle in the middle of the night? Do you think it's because the Camilia was already in her system?
3. Is there any way to avoid habitual night wakings with teething? I'm worried that this is becoming a habit b/c although she is chewing on things during the day, she is SO happy and doesn't seem to be in pain....is that just how it goes?
THanks for the suggestion on early bedtime. I'm not sure I would've had the confidence to try it. My husband was VERY doubtful but I read all of your posts to him, ladies and I think that helped convince him.
At least she didn't wake in the early evening!
Here's hoping today is similar!
-
Smurfette,
I just wanted to say that I am going through the same thing, to the "T". Our 8 month old DD has been teething for a month now, one tooth has half way popped through on the bottom and it seems like she is chewing every inch of her mouth. Your night last night has been our night for the last 4 nights....with a few more wakings.
We are at a loss or I would provide some help. Advil does not seem to help her no matter what.....not even combined with Oragel.
So, maybe if people respond to your post, I will get help as well.
-
I think by the time they wake up in the early hours of the morning with teething it has really got bad, you know like when you have slight period pains, ignore them and go to bed then wake in the night and take painkillers but they take ages to kick in and you wish you took them when the pain first started :P Maybe you could try timing it by giving some PK before bed and then again with the DF, we didn't do a DF but when we knew dd was teething badly we would DF her some milk with meds just before we went to bed, well when DH went to bed which would be around midnight, this would totally eliminate those long teething NWs :)
I reckon she napped better because she is exhausted after the NWs and also teething pain builds up the longer you are lying down and isn't necessarily just mouth pain but pressure in the ears so not so much time to happen at naptime.
I don't think you need to worry about habitual NWs, I used to always worry but things always went back to how they were before. The pain is definitley worst at night whilst lying down with nothing to distract them, totally normal ;)
Willowonxy, have you also tried giving the Advil before the pain gets really bad? It makes a massive difference, I know how it is feeling like you shouldn't give meds until you know they really need it but they wors best if given early :)
-
Hugs to you Willowwonyx! Maybe this forum should create a 'Teething' board for those of us that have bad teethers! Lol.
DD only napped an hour..*sigh* but woke happy and I couldn't extend. I guess I could've done more A time but so scared to get her OT again.
-
Skatty- We give Advil which you're only suppose to give every 6-8 hours. We were going to give at the DF instead but b/c I was out and she was crying so hard, DH gave at 6:45pm. So then we couldn't give it again until after 12:45.
Perhaps that's something we can try tonight if the stars and moon align. ;)
-
Oh, that must be something stronger than they sell in the UK, I thought it was the same as Nurofen which can be given every 4-6hrs, have you tried alternating paracetomel and ibu, it means that you don't have to let anything completely wear off before redosing so maybe paracetomel at bedtime, Ibu fro the DF and if you are up for at least a few hours after that then some more paracetomel before you go to bed.
-
Advil is ibuprofen (6-8 hrs). I think paracetomel is Tylenol (4-6 hrs). We haven't tried alternating since before we knew she had the bladder/ UT infection, so maybe that's something to try again. Thanks for the reminder.
-
Thank you ladies.
We have tried the Advil (6-8 hrs) at bedtime (7pm) as well as first dose at DF (10:30) and neither gave a good result.
What I have been holding off doing is the alternating meds. Maybe I will try that tonight. Give Tylenol at bedtime and then Advil after DF at 11pm.
-
Willowonyx- I have also had more success when I give Camilia with the Advil.
http://boiron.ca/en/products/children/camilia/
I love how they talk about an '8 day' window under symptoms... of course if I look at the day of my first post, I'm still under that so I guess I shouldn't complain. It feels like forever! I guess that's b/c of the bladder infection last week when we thought it was teething. ::)
-
Just wanted to pop on & say I feel your pain!!!
We have been teething for what feels like forever & DS has FINALLY cut 4 top teeth & 1 bottom tooth in the last week & a half. Today I noticed another bottom tooth bulging under the gum so that'll be here any time. He's been absolutely beside himself & just fussing all day long I could see they were really sore. We use Dentinox teething gel as that can be applied every 20mins & have been keeping him dosed up on Calpol (Paracetemol) or Calprofen (Ibuprofen).
Hope the teeth emerge soon.xx
-
Thanks. I will have to stop by the organic market to find the Camilia.

I'm not sure where you live, but here in Canada we can get it at the pharmacy or grocery stores, not just health food places.
-
I am in the US and according to their website it is sold in organic and health food store....not regular food stores or quick pharmacies.
-
I have NO idea what happened last night but I hope it happens again.
I gave her some acetaminophen at bedtime (7pm) and then husband gave her ibuprofen at 10:30 and I also used a different brand of diaper (just curious if she was waking from a very wet diaper) and we got a STTN!
So, we will try it again tonight and see what happens. I just don't want to be giving her meds when she doesn't need them....so I guess we will just have to watch for all the cues of teething pain.
-
I use pampers 12 hr protection diapers for overnight, we actually call them night diapers in my house as they are only used at nap and bedtime so a box last a very long time. Then I put a coating of vaseline( and bum cream if there is a teething rash) from one end to the other, no nwing from cold/leaking diapers.
Hope you get another STTN to night !
-
Jealous!
We did pretty much the same thing and but DD woke 8 times from 6:15-9:30pm. I'm thinking that we didn' give the right amount of Tylenol as I find it very hard to accurately measure with the dropper that they give. And/or she was OT from not great naps and no cat nap...???
BUt after the advil at 10, she slept until 4:30 which is when, I'm guessing it wore off. I only got another hour of sleep out of her so our day began at 5:40am . :(
-
How long do teeth tend to take to cut through? My DS has been teething badly since Saturday so 6 days. I medicate him up at night so no problems sttn but during the day he is so grissly and unsettled, gnawing on everything. I can see the buds at the top and bottom but nothing coming through, seems to be taking forever!
My DS is 8 nearly 9 months and doesn't have a single tooth yet!
-
My DD is over a week and a half already and they still haven't come through. She slept through the night with only one dose of Advil but woke at 5 40 again this morning and now only took a 50 min nap. I tried to extend but no luck. :(
I can't seem to get out of this early morning, early bed loop.
-
DS's 8th tooth is finally starting to cut. Its a bottom one so not as painful as the top ones have been. I'm hoping it should be through the gum in a few days & then we should be done with teething for a little while at least. YIPPEE!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Sorry ladies, don't mean to rub it in, but after cutting 5 at once & 1 more only a week later, I am ready for a break!!!!!!! :P
-
@ Clairebear79
Yeah, I've been following along with your many posts. Quite an adventure you've had ...(ok *trying* to be positive, it has probably been hideous!)...although our EWs aren't as early as yours, I've got a nasty cycle of OT, EBT, EW and crappy naps going on over here too.
I hope things are going better for you soon! :)
-
thanks Smurfette. I hope your LO's teeth cut soon & you get out of the EW, EBT loop soon too!x
-
Still here. Still no teeth. Still bad naps on and off. Still waking at the 5 hour (although she is going to sleep around 6:30 pm, so technically not an EW, but just too early). Good news is that the ENWs are seeming to taper off...knock on wood.
How long do these things take!!!???? GRRRRRRRRR!
-
Oh dear. They will come it just takes time I'm afraid. A week ago I said DS's 8th tooth was starting to cut - there's still only 1 corner of the tooth through & today is the first day its not seemed to be bothering him as much.
We are just the same with 6ish BT & 5am wake - at least if your LO has had less NW's then they are getting 11hrs solid sleep at night which is really great!!! Hope naps start to improve soon & then better night sleep will follow.xx
-
Thanks
After complaining last night, she slept through until 5 with no wakings at all and therefore no meds. Even after flipping over on her belly halfway through!. I was able to get her back to sleep at 5 for another 50 mins after I flipped her back at 5. Really strange as yesterday she had about 2 hours daytime sleep. I thought for sure it would be a restless night. Go figure!
-
Hugs to you Willowwonyx! Maybe this forum should create a 'Teething' board for those of us that have bad teethers! Lol.
I agree with this 100% I just posted on the medical board trying to find out how you know when your LO's are teething
-
Well, we are still dealing with all kinds of NWs. We got a few good STTN a few weeks ago and then went on a family vacation. While on vaca we got two STTNs all other nights had NUMEROUS NWs. We have been back for two nights now and now instead of waking over and over between 1:30 and 6am....it is now between 11pm and 1am. All during the vaca we did meds for sleeping and she was chewing on her fingers non-stop. We got back and I wanted to give her a break, so last two night no meds. And what to my eyes should appear, but the second front bottom tooth was cutting through yesterday. But she is chewing all over her mouth like she is going to get even her canines.
At this point, we are just going to take it day by day until she gets her main teeth in. I guess the only thing we can do is just comfort her and get her (us) through it.
How is everyone else doing?
-
Hallelujah!!!!!!!!!
The tooth started to FINALLY cut yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SHe got almost a 12hr sleep and just did a 2hr nap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know this may not last so I thought I would share with those of you who understand/relate. ;)
-
Congrats smurfette, glad she got some sleep. My DGS is a mess too. I can feel his tooth but not see it,iykwim. We have so many night wakes and short naps right now. I dont think he is ever going to sleep right again.
-
Awesome Smurfette!
NanaC, I am right there with you!
-
Oh my! Last night was SO bad....she was waking up since 9:30pm until 5am! That was probably our worst night yet and I was on duty. I REALLY hope this all pasts soon.....and that was after a great day of eating, sleeping and on meds. OY! :-\
-
Oh boy I feel for you willow,
I had 3 nights in a row like that. Last night he only woke three times, once at 10:30 to eat then 11:30 for soothing and again at 3. I think his pain was better last night. I so hope that tooth gets moving faster soon.
BIG (((((HUGS))))) for you. We WILL get through this, we will.
-
Hows the teeth coming?? I think M's quit moving for now. He actually slept through last night until 6am with only 1 NW at 11:40. I think he has 2 teeth on the bottom moving twards the surface,so I hope they both pop at once
-
Still waiting for the 2nd top tooth to cut.
Last night was pretty bad and today she only napped for 50 mins and I tried for 20+ mins to get her back to sleep but she just moaned and then would suck her thumb and then moan again.
Dh and I are putting on quite the show for her today to keep her distracted as meds don't seem to help much. We're singing, dancing, making funny faces...etc. Maybe a trip to the mall will help! Lol
-
My LO seems to finally be content.....we have had 3 STTN, YAYAYAYAYAYAY! Probably because the second bottom front one has cut through.
Now she is chewing like crazy for the top two, so that will be the next batch of sleepless night. :-\
-
What does it mean "cut through" I can now feel my LO's tooth's top edge, so it feels like its through the gums, but still cant really see it. He slept a little better last night. But now I'm thinking I need to up his bottles. He woke at 10:30 and ate 10 oz and he usually only gets 6oz. I wish I could find a bottle that I can make 8 oz in.
Smurfette..I feel for you, we had so many days like that recently. Even today he just woke after 1hr but he's happy so its not the tooth bothering him now.
willow..I'm so happy for you! You finally got some sleep YAY. Hope those next teeth dont come too quickly. It would be nice to get some sleep for awhile before starting all over again.
-
Cut through means they have completely cleared the gums, you will be able to clearly see the tooth when it does.
-
I hope its soon. OMG he is so grumpy today. He's not happy doing anything. He wont even calm down with me holding him. I think he's going to have an early pm nap today for sure
-
I'm right there with you NanaC!
