Title: Toys to take on an airplane for 22 month old
Post by: twogirlsmommy on May 03, 2011, 21:46:25 pm
Subject says it all.  What do I take with me for her to play with?  The flight is only 2 hours long but we will be at our destination for 6 days.  Any suggestions?  I bought her a travel little people wedding set (my brother is getting married which is why we are going) and will throw in some extra people.  We will bring books and we have a travel magna doodle I will be bringing coloring book and crayons although she is not super interested in it at the moment (might kill 5 minutes on the plane.)  I have no clue what else to bring. Help!

Anne gave me a great idea for a second bday present I needed to give. Busy Boxes. I purchased metal lunchboxes and packed them full of assorted things to keep LOs busy for occasions such as this.

silly putty
small toys from the dollar store (they often have mini my little pony or babydoll type things)
magnetic letters (should stick to the metal lunch box top!
stickers/sticker book
large beads and string to thread them and make a necklace

if all else fails, portable DVD player???? LOL

if all else fails, portable DVD player???? LOL

This was going to be my suggestion!  We've traveled with Austin a lot and tbh, the dvd thing has been the best money we've spent.  We don't do TV much at all at home, so I think the novelty factor helps, but regardless it's great.  I got a pretty cheap one off of Amazon and a thing to mount it in the car when we need it there and on long trips it's a godsend.   Everything else I've tried keeps his attention for 5 min tops.

Oh but I will say - snacks, snacks, and more snacks!!!  I find that I can keep him entertained longer by feeding him one little snack at  time than any toys.  ;)

Hmmmm, wondering the same as Leo will be 22 months when we fly home in July.
TV doesn't keep him interested for more than a few minutes :-\
But I love the idea of a Busy Box - I'll have to have a think about that ;)

I was also thinking to order some lift the flap books (especially with animals) as he'll sit for quite some time with a book. Or maybe a simple sticker book.
I'll have a look on Amazon and post links for anything I like!

Stickers, stickers and more stickers!!!! DD had hours of fun (3hrs 40ins to be exact! :p ) sticking them all over the seats, pull down table and arm rests!!!! She loved the last part of the descent too - she had 15mins to pick them all off again!! LOL ;D ;D ;D

Defo go for the cheapy stickers tho - less glue and easier to unpeal again!!

Even the airhostess remarked "I'd much rather clear them up at the end of a flight than for you to have a crying, bored child for the flight!"!!!

Stickers for us, too!! Our flight home is about 1.5h there, 2 hours back and stickers get us a very good chunk of time!  Snacks as well, and I take things he normally wouldn't be allowed to eat - a mini bag of Walker's crisps (ie potato chips) and the kid looked like he'd hit the jackpot, sat quietly savouring every smell and taste...it was a big treat and he knew it and he loved it!  (I figure holidays are holidays for kids, too and so no harm in a treat!)

Things to avoid - anything little that can be dropped and roll away resulting in the need to get out of your chair and reach beneath chairs or ask the people behind you to get it for you.  It will always happen during a turbulent time in the flight and when you have to tell your LO that he can't have it back until the seatbelt sign is off....ya, not fun!!!

I keep a pen in my purse and let him draw moustaches on all of the faces in the in-flight magazine (at 22 months he got the humour in this!!!) and that can take a good 30 minutes.

Our flight home is 24 hours. Not joking. 24 hours people, can you imagine...so, stickers, a roll of masking tape, a bottle of bubbles, several brand new lift-the-flap books, get a bunch of the plastic cups they give you and do goo eyes and stacking and putting things in games, peekaboo with the people behind you, walking up and down up and down up and down up and down, a roll of toilet paper is great fun to rip into a million little pieces, tearing the pages out of the inflight magazine is also fun, did I mention walking up and down up and down up and down?

Yep stickers worked here too!  We had a 6 hour flight and the boys were kept amused with stickers, plasticine, snacks, pens paper and a DVD player - I really worried about the flight but to be honest it was much better than I ever expected - Good luck!

Oh yes, we do walking up and down here, too!! On our last trip we got stuck behind the drinks trolley walking back to our seats and DS took his time stopping to ask everyone who had just been served if they were enjoying their hot coffee or telling them that their food looked yuck and that he would not eat it ("hi man!! hi wady!! dat yuck, i no eat that one!! dat coffee hot? you wike dat hot coffee?")   Oh yes, in-flight entertainment!!

LOL at the crisps!!! Oscar only gets to eat Pringles on Aer Lingus. We can't buy them here so he was really shocked when he saw them in the shops in Dublin last week. He really thought they were only available onboard Aer Lingus.

I do 3 hr flights regularly since both of mine were 3/4 mths, sometimes alone and sometimes with DH. Anything gadgety is great for them at 2 and above.

Also make use of the stuff available on the plane! We decorate sick bags with markers and stickers and Emma loves browsing even the mags for the in-flight shopping service...It used to be so much easier when they still bfed. Our outgoing flight is always arond lunchtime so they'd drop off on the boob and I'd be free (when just Ozzie) or free to chat with Ozzie when Emma was the bfed baby/toddler...but those days are well gone.

flying at 2 yrs 3 mths this past Easter was a LOT easier than at just over 2 I have to say, I'd forgotten how much easier things become in a few months....she can now sit and actually chat and have a convo rather than want to run off. Of course, she also had her own seat so this made a difference as well.

We actually had one of those cheapie ponies this time and cheapie farm animals and dinosaurs as well as reusable stickers....lots of our own healthy snacks with the promise of Pringles from the cabin crew as well.

LOL Mashi - Emma literally walked from Dublin to Warsaw on NY morning this year at 7am till 10am....everyone wanted to sleep but she went arond shush-patting as best as she could..."Man, seeping, shush, lady seeping shush" etc

S x

Thanks for all the ideas lady.  Here's another question. What do you pack for them to play with when you get to your destination?  We will be staying in a hotel for some of the days and a friends condo the rest.

Again, we did a lot of books and then a few current favorite items. Most of the other stuff lying about will be novel enough that you shouldn't need too much!

I read something yesterday that suggested to wrap everything up like presents so that it takes more time up, and makes it all more exciting!

Also those colouring books/pads which use an aquadraw type pen are great and not very messy.

We took a bunch of stuff and he wanted none of it.  He screamed for the entire first hour.  The only thing that kept him mildly entertained was the back of seat TV but he couldn't reach it which frustrated him and he didn't really like the headphones on his head.  Ours was an 8 hr flight though.

The wrapping is a great tip and I think we'll be trying that next time.  Either that or sedation lol

Playdoh and a 'in the night garden ' magazine with stickers kept ds amused on a train for nearly 3hours (interspersed with snacks and looking out window!!

do your friends have friends with kids? we're firm believers in borrowing things. travelling to germany there's only so much we can bring, especially when i'm by myself with both kids. we bring small favorites, and supplement once we get there. also leave room for things to bring back, we always seem to get stuck in the german toystores and bring back lots (that also gets played with over there). :-) happy travelling!

We made it! And on the way home we were only delayed 6 hours :) Thank god for my husbands blackberry and you tube.  We ended up letting her watch Elmo on the phone while we waited b.c literally on the way home we were supposed to land @5pm and we didn't get in till 11pm.

Yay for making it!!  Elmo on YouTube (unfortunately) holds a special place in my heart for moments like that. ::)
