Title: Dropping a feed? Help Please!
Post by: Gooders on May 09, 2011, 18:41:17 pm
First of all, thank you to all that have helped me in the past on here, inc Anna. I can now see my little boy settling into a lovely routine (with a few hiccups) but he is alot more settled. He is now going to bed at 7pm and waking at 5.30am for a feed and then getting up at 7.30-8am.

Anyway over the last couple of days he will not take his feed after his bath. He refuses point blank! This evening I only managed to get 2oz into him.

His EASY routine is:

E&A:7.30 - 8.45/9.00
S:9-10.30

E&A:10.30-12.00
S:12-1.30

E&A:1.30-3
S:3-4.30 (BUT THIS ONE IS ALWAYS SHORT AND COME HELL OR HIGH WATER HE WILL NOT GO BACK TO SLEEP)

E:5PM
Bath and bed starts at 6.30pm and he normally is in bed and asleep for 7pm. Tonight he was so tired he was nearly falling asleep on me, that just does not happen anymore! I offer him his bottle after he is in his P.J's and before putting him down so just about 6.45pm...

Should I be dropping a feed somewhere?

just taking a quick look - will read better later (LO just woke up) but, I am wondering if maybe the 5PM feeding is cutting into the 6:45 feeding - perhaps offer less at 5, so he takes a full feeding before bed?

but first of all, what ages is your LO?

I'm going to move you to the lovely ladies in bottle feeding...I believe your concern overlaps on EASY and feeds but perhaps it's more of a feeding issue for now :) :-*

Thanks Jinx.

Can anyone help over here? Last night he woke at 12.45am and then again at 6.15am, I put him back down as if it was still night (which it is really for him as he never gets up that early) and he is currently asleep. Everything seems so messy!

Could be growth spurt, there is a big one around 12 weeks. I agree with a PP that the 5pm feed is too close to his bedtime feed and if he is really tired by then because of a short nap that is probably why he isn't taking much. Are you doing a dreamfeed at all?

I was but missed it twice as the alarm didnt go off (I go to bed early!) and when he didnt have it it didnt make any difference. He still woke at the same time and took the same amount. Having said that I did give him another 4oz before going to bed last night and he still woke at 12.45 & 6.15am

what is your idea wake up time?  from your easy post above, it looks like 7:30? is that correct?

I do remember a week or so when DS did a 6ish wake up - and was hungry -- this lasted a very short time before he was able to sleep through until 7:30.  I would keep being consistent - feed and put him back to bed until his wake-up.  When I did this, I would just give him a short feed again before his nap since he really didn't want to eat at 7:30 when he "woke" up for the day.  to be honest, I didn't do a DF for very long because it was distrubring his sleep cycle, and he would be up for a hour or so, so I dropped it pretty early. I think if it works for you and your LO its really nice to do to help with sleeping through the night.

have you tried giving a smaller feed at 5?

Ideally 7.30am and he seems to normally hit that, but last night he woke twice (well once at 6.15) and I let him go back to sleep until when he next woke up... this was accidental as I got dressed, made a coffee and made the bed, thus falling asleep again. Also my non napper is sleeping alot today. He has recently (the last 2 weeks) moved onto 100% ff from combo.

As LO didn't feed again until 9.15 he is actually due a feed at 6.15 instead of 5 as we work on a 3 hr cycle and hopefully that will even things out a bit. Coule he be going through a GS? Do you think I should get him up at 7.30am everyday anyway, tempting as it is to let him sleep in?

will you type out your EASY again?

I would always try and have the same wake-up regardless.  Yes, I know its tempting to sleep in!!! :)

he very well could be going through a GS.  thats great that he put himself back to sleep!

Today it was E:6.15
S:6.30-8.45
E&A:10.15
S:10.15 - 12.00
E&A: 12 - 1.30
S: 1.30 -3.00
E&A: 3.00 - 4.15
S: 4.15 - 5.00
E & A: 5.00 - 6.45... During this time he had a bottle, bath with daddy and bed... Tried to finish his bottle post bath but he was having none of it! Since then he has woken at 10.30 (unheard of really!) and 3.15am.

*hugs* ...oh no. How does he react? Does he have any milk at all? How does he act during a feed? How does he drink on his other feeds?

how many ounces are you offering per/bottle?

have you tired settling at night without the bottle?  will he take a pacifier?

I would still try to have a set wake up - even if he wakes at 6:15 and falls back asleep - keep 7:30 (or whatever time you choose) as your start - he will set his clock, and I think that will help with the overall day/night sleep

He is taking 8oz every feed. He had started to take this every 3 hrs again now and despite giving a DF at 11am he still woke at 3am taking 8oz both times and going straight back to sleep. I really do think he is hungry otherwise he would cry when I left him surely?

I think you are right.  it really does sound like a growth spurt if he is taking that much!  I remember when my LO when through this growth spurt, then I was so concerned when he slowed down a few weeks later and wasn't eating as much!  it is amazing  these little grown spurts.  hopefully soon after this one, he will sleep well at night for you!

I am sure he went through his GS last week as he was waking 3 times a night taking that amount... now its just once. Do I just carry on getting up and feeding? As I say, he takes it and then goes straight back down.

just go with it hun...

the only thing that would make them otherwise get their calories at night would be reflux related.
