Title: 8mo started NWs. OT? Milestone? teething? :(
Post by: peek4boo on May 13, 2011, 16:33:31 pm
Hi
My 8mo DS has been sleeping 10-11 hours through the night since he was around 4/5mo, with no dreamfeed. Just recently, over the last week, he would wake up at random times at night and it would take 1 hr to get him back to sleep. Yesterday it was from 12:40-1:20. He wakes up crying and we would try to resettle by patting. He then would sleep for 5-10min and starts to cry again. This goes on for 1 hr!

Not sure what the cause is. He has 1 bottom tooth out and another one just barely below the gum. He's generally happy during the day so I don't think it's teething. He's also addicted to patting and I'm in the process of weaning (the NWs started before I tried weaning). He has also started to belly crawl and is trying to sit up. I've also read about the wonder week and he is in the middle of one.

Does anyone know what may be causing the NWs? Will he go back to sleeping 10-11 hrs at night?

Thanks

DS has continued his NWs consistently everyday for the last week. Yesterday I noticed that his eyes were closed the entire time he was crying, and being resettled. Is this night terror? The first night this happens I picked him up and he stopped crying but woke up. I also tried ignoring but his cries would escalate and he would wake himself up.

The good thing is that, he always wakes up happy in the morning and remained happy the entire day, lots of laughters and finding everything amusing. This makes me think that he probably wasn't awake and has enough night sleep. What do you think? Is there anything I can do or should I just ride this one out?

Hi, I am sorry no one responded sooner.  Can you post your current routine in EAS format?

my 7 month old wakes in the night at least once, up until recently I always fed her then one night I left her.  She actually had her eyes closed too and resettled herself.  I think I was actually waking her up to feed her.  I've noticed it;s mostly if we have company too so maybe a bit too much stimulation.

I could have wrote this post myself.  My now 9 month old is going through the SAME thing!  She is trying to walk and crawl at the same time, and may be teething, but is happy during the day so I'm not sure.

She is also waking in the very late evening and it's taking hours to get her back to sleep....I hope someone with some advice posts because lord knows I need it too!!  Hang in there : )

Hi,
Yesterday night was terrible. DS woke up at around 1:30 and was impossible to settle. I would pat him and 5min later he wakes again crying. I gave him Tylenol at the 1.5 hour mark, thinking it may be teething. Then after almost 2 hours, DH suggested that we feed him. We gave him 120ml and he fell asleep right after.

Here's my EAS from yesterday:
Wake: 5:30am

E: 6:00 am (bottle), 7:30 (fruits & oatmeal)
A: 3hr 45min
S: 9:15 - 10:30 (1hr 15min)

E: 11:00 (bottle), 12:30 (rice, chicken and veggies)
A: 3hr 30min
S: 2:00 - 3:10 (1hr 10min)

E: 3:30 (bottle), 5:00 (fruits)
A: 3hr 20min
S: 6:30
NW: 1:30 - 3:10

Please help, not sure what to do. He woke up this morning at 6:30 and he has been happy all morning. Could it be teething? Or "wonder week"? Really at a lost here. He has never had such a lengthy NW.

hillybean: Is your LO teething? how long has the NWs been going on and has your LO been sleeping through the night previously? Can you LO self soothe (i.e. put herself to sleep)? Mine still needs me to pat him to sleep for less then 1 min. Not sure if this could be the cause. But if it is, why is it that he was able to sleep through the night for the last 4 months?

Thanks in advance

Have you tried Ibuprofin right before bedtime?  my LO went through a wicked teething patch at this age.  One of the top teeth caused a lot of sleep disturbances.

Are you willing to tackle independent sleep?  I am thinking you should stop the patting if you are ready.

Nothing stands out about your routine. :-\

Hi,
Yes, I'm actually also in the middle of trying independent sleep. The NWs started before I tried to stop the patting. Right now I am trying to take the gradual withdrawal approach and pat DS less and less each day. So far it hasn't been working too well, I'm afraid (my post about this is in the general sleep board). I don't know when to start and stop patting. He has been crying more during naps and bedtime because I only pat him if his mantra cries escalate. If I don't pat, his mantra cries will always escalate... so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Anyway, the weaning issue should probably be addressed on a different thread.

Could teething be the cause if he's happy during the day? He currently has 1 bottom tooth completely out and the other bottom tooth is right below the gum line.

Thanks again

I didn't realize you had a thread on the GS boards.  I think it is best to work of off 1 thread to avoid conflicting advice.  Please post here. http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=209986.0
