Title: Need some help getting lo to take HAF
Post by: my3girlsjde on May 19, 2011, 11:35:00 am
Hi - in a nutshell, I ebf'd for a year and transitioned E onto soy milk on the advice of my Dr. It took 11 months for this child to happily take a bottle to begin with so we were pretty excited that she liked the soy. Then she began reacting to the soy milk and is completely mspi. On the advice of our dietician with E's slower growth we're putting her on HAF.

So I'm trying to get a child who went from sweet soy milk and breast milk to this vile tasting stuff. She took the first oz no problem, but then her taste buds woke up. I've tried sweetening it, mixing 1/4 HAF with 3/4 soy, and then sweetening it. She takes a couple of sucks and that's it.

Any ideas? I'd really like her to take this stuff.

TIA

Ok so it's a couple of hours later and this is where we are:

She's guzzled almost 4oz of a 1/4 haf 3/4 soy milk mixed and ridiculously sweetened. It's a start as she normally takes 8oz in the morning. Perhaps she just needs some time to adjust? I'll keep the same mix up for the rest of the day.

Fingers crossed xxx

You may need to go even slower than that. I would try 1oz HAF to 7oz soy, keep to that until she is drinking it happily then do 2oz HAF to 6oz soy. It's not ideal given that she is reacting to it, but at her age her tastebuds really will object. Is that an option or will you carry on as you are and reduce the sweetner bit once she's totally on HAF?

She ended up finishing the bottle :D. Hopefully it wasn't a fluke. I'm going to try the same concentration tonight - only because she's been reacting to the soy and I'd like to do this ASAP. If she rejects it, I'll do like you say and do 1/8th. Hopefully I won't need to as she went down for her first independent nap in days and she's still asleep at 1hr 40mins and I'm going up to wake her soon ;D

Will be back after tonight's bottle to update. Fingers crossed she takes at least 6oz.

Hi Vicki

Hope she took the bottle ok.  If not then I agree with Laura to go really slowly with it.  We did exactly that with our DS when we transitioned him onto HAF from regular formula.  It smells & tastes vile & to start with he did just like your DD - drank 1oz & that was it!  We did 1oz HAF/7oz regular for all feeds for that day.  If he took it ok, increased the next day.  It took us a couple of weeks, but now he drinks the HAF no problem.  Its not good for mixing in food though!x

I've done BM -> Neocate with both of my lo's but much younger when they are a little less stubborn and aren't eating anything else so will go hungry otherwise! E was 4 months and took it no question (she knew she needed it!), but J was harder. He was 4.5-5months I think.

We used :-\ brown sugar on the teat to get him to suck it in the first place. We resorted to putting a tiny bit of brown sugar on the teat in the first few days :-\ to entice him to suck it and would find he would usually keep going once started. We had a wee patch where he would stop at 90ml then protest  each time he tried to suck more because it was like he had the edge of his hunger but he was hoping for something different the next time.
I've heard if you're doing part HAF part something else you should move the percentage of HAF up as quickly as you can to prevent them getting used to it.

She CHUGGED her bedtime bottle. I was so proud of her ;)

Probably helps that it was hot and we had a late supper where I gave her a bit less than normal. I'm sweetening with sugar which will be something else to wean but whatever! I'm so over the moon I can't describe it! I long feared that my decision to do the 'right' thing by continuing to bf would bite me in the butt. But I think I underestimated my angel baby.

So that was 16oz today at 1/4. She's not as eczema-ish and less clawing at her neck and way less hives, so I know that she's dealing with the haf better than the soy milk.

To top it all off, when she sat up to burp, she grabbed the bottle top and put it on and said "ha ha". :o

Thanks everyone for your advice. I'll keep updating and keep fingers and toes crossed that she repeats this tomorrow xxx

I'm watching in amazement as she takes it at 50% :o :o :o. Something tells me that this is not the norm but after all our feeding challenges this past year, I'd say she's earned this being easy on her :D

Quick question though:

If she went so quickly from 25% to a 50% concoction, should I quickly move up to 75%? I'm afraid of getting stuck at a certain mix and I want to get her completely off of the soy to help her with her reflux.

I'm really not sure! Given how well she is taking 50% after only 1 day on 25% I would give it a go tomorrow. If she refuses you can always go back to 50% which you know she will take for a day or so then wean a bit more slowly from 50%.

Maybe she knows this will help her feel better!

i'd go quickly if she'll let you too. i've had/having a hard time with my LO going from Neocate LCP to Neocate Advanced (both hypoallergenic formulas but baby and toddler ones), the only significant diff is the oils used to make it but obviously enuf of a diff taste to him, he flatly refused any neocate advanced by itself. so went 25%, 50% route but then he would throw the cup at 50% :o, so now going oz by oz swapping, and cant get paste 50% without him refusing (this is 2mths later, tho i try again every month). long story short, def try and get it over and done with quickly if she's accepting it so she doesnt get used to any particular taste until it's all swapped over. so glad it is going well for you both :-*

Thanks, that's exactly what I did last night. I threw caution to the wind and gave her full formula - which she downed ;D ;D ;D

So there we have it, in 36hrs she was fully transitioned onto it and now I just have to wean the sweetener. I'm going to take the same approach I think and do it quickly. I took a 3 bottle per day approach though I don't thinl she needs 3 per day at this age (dietician thinks two 8oz bottles are enough) but I wanted to do this quick. She's not taking nearly as much solids so once I get her on it with no sweetener I'll drop her down to two bottles per day.

Thanks again everyone. I'll update weaning the sweetener.
