Hi guys,
We have an almost 18month old DS. he has been STTN since 9weeks but just the last few months things seem to be wonky.
He is waking up most nights for anywhere up to 2.5hours at a time. It is sometimes crying and unhappy and other times talking and laughin which is why im confused.
Our routine through the day looks a little like this
wakes about 5-530*usually* has a bottle and back to sleep until 7
eats breakie etc plays
11 lunch
12 sleep (anywhere from 1/2hr-2hrs depending, and will NOT sleep again rest of day no moatter what)
so then up anywhere from 12.30-2
afternoon tea playing
5pm dinner
bath 5-45
bottle
6-6.30 bed, usually closer to 6 as he is always wrecked.
Im sort of laning towards thinking he could almost be UT on somesdays(the ones where he wakes laughin and talking) so im wondering if its as simple as moving BT back a little bit on those days? what do you think.
TIA :)

Hi there...
Some LO's can go through some sleep regression at around 18mths (see below thread) & are usually due to developmental leaps:
http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=176250.0
Is he teething at all?
I would say that if he is having long wakings & then waking early he is more likely to be OT, although it could have started from him being UT then got into an UT/OT loop.
-
Why do you think he naps such a varied amount? Does he always go down at noon? He may well be OT if a lot of days he's only getting 30mins nap
-
Hi,thanks for the advice on the sleep regression, im not sure why he always sleeps a varied amount, im not sure if its his actual activity while hes awake doenst keep him busy enough and other days too busy.
yes,he always naps at noon and sometimes the days he only has 30min i can get him to sleep in the car a bit later on but mostly not.
i know some daYS hes most def OT but its so hard when he only wants one nap to give him one earliert in the day, then hell be in bed at 5 and up at 5 lolol...
hes been on one nap for a long time so i would imagine he should be starting to settle down by now!??
-
Does he always nap in his cot? I think if we could get the naps a bit more consistent the other bits would fall into place.
-
Yep,he always is in his cot I've never been a rocker unless for apop purposes. What do you think I could try?!! Going out of my mind today for example, woke for day at 530 :( and it's now 11:45and guess wot he won't sleep I've tried all
Morning to help him out but no luck.
-
Did you get him down in the end? Is he protesting or upset or just playing around? I'm guessing we need to try and find the "magic" time. I'm thinking you have two choices...
Super early nap *or* really push him and see if that helps.
What's happening with teeth? Canines are around 18mths and they are brutal.
I think if it were me I would try to push the nap back to 1pm and see what happens - regardless of wake up. If he falls asleep quickly and sleeps well we have our answer ;)
-
Ok thanks I'll try that.. I do get him down eventually mostly he protests sometimes he'll sleep straight away. He has always been touchy with sleep. Teeth are coming through fast and furiously but in saying thar o have been keeping the meds and gel up to him.. Thanks for your advice I'll give it a few days and cone back with results :)
-
DS's canines are coming through ATM & are causing us some issues (he's a similar age to your LO). Doing a meds dream feed in the early hours is really working for us!
-
Oh siane thats something to consider too!!sorry ive been out of action on the net for a few days! well, i didnt move his sleep because miraculously he has started sleeping a little better, he is waking for less time through the night and so *so far* sleeping about 1.5hrs through the day with his nap at 12.sometimes its more like 1hr20,would this indicate OT or still possibly a little UT do you think? im gong to try push him out a few mins, but was leaving it as is for a few days while it was going ok!! IYKWIM??!!
thanks
-
I would probably say that the shorter nap is more than likely OT so I would maybe keep the nap at 12pm for a couple more days & hopefully his nights continue to improve then you can start to push the nap a bit later.
-
I was going to say the opposite to Sian but my DS is a bit contrary! ;) 1hr 20min naps were UT here.... Is your LO typically a good or bad napper that may help decide?!!
-
Hmm interesting babybarr he is always a bad napper. But I will say that most of it seems to be from me not getting the magic A time. I've nevr been great at reading his cues only now he's older he kinda tells me lol! He is getting used to the 12 bed time tho the last 2 days he has protested (crying for a few
Mins and mucking around) so I'm wondering if maybe UT is a thing to consider too?!!
The thing is yest he slept for 45mins but I was able to settle him quickly and he had almost 1hr45! Very unpredictable little man! What do you think about that? Thanks for replying!
-
Oh I mist mention also that we seem to have ditched the early morning feed at last! We just went cold turkey and it's been 4 days and so far so good nights are improving as he knows there is nothing to wake for I guess?! He woke at 5 this
Morning demanding one but I tol him to lay down and go back to sleep and he did! Yay!

WOW!!! That's great well done you :)
My DS was a terrible napper - I too just thought I couldn't get the "magic" A time but I think some LOs just are nopt programmed that way. He did *so* much better with a set nap and with pushed out A times. Crying before nap was *always* UT here. I would be tempted to push the nap back by 15/20mins and just see what happens. Took me a long time to do this due to worrying about OT etc but now I've found he'll settles much quicker and sleep better when super tired. HTH
-
So here I am back lol, only I wish I was laughing :(
He has been doing awesome nights like 6-6 BUT the day naps have gone waaaaayyyy down hill. Like 50 mins for the whole day. :( Guess what it's 5:15am and I've been awake with him since 4 am! I know it's OT so I guess that 6am wake and 12pm nap is far too much A time. I have been trying not to change nap time as I want a set time but now I feel like I'm back behind the 8 ball again. I have to work today so now he's off to day care with a bad nights sleep and he'll get minimal sleep there and it doesn't seem to make any difference what I tell them in care, they won't try for a secOnd sleep.
AAAARRRRGGGHHHHHHH! I just know I'm in for hell AGAIN tonight.
Obviously, if he's going to wake at 6 I need to cut the nap time back so maybe by half hour? Is it wrOng to change the nap time when I'm trying to be consistent though?! Sorry eveythig I think I'm out of the woods here we go again. Honestly, I'm over it.
-
{{Hugs}}!!
If you could post what his days are looking like ATM that would really help.
Does he still have his canines coming through? Have you been giving meds...you could also try a meds dream feed?
-
Ok thanks for the reply. Yeah I think he may have his bottom ones coming think he has his top ones. He has just cut all his molars in the past 2 Weeks his one yr ones. He is cross cutting his teeth so he has them everywhere and not in"order". Plus he is prone to ear infections which I'm currently trying to get on top of. He goes to the specialist next week.so yes, I have been quite liberal with the meds due to all of this stuff :(
Ok so a day goes like this pretty much:
6am- wake breakfast etc
8 morning tea( usually snacks before this he's a big eater!)
11 lunch
12 sleep - 12.58 and past 2 dys can't be settled
Snack when he gets up
2 afternoon tea
Play etc more snacks
5pm bath
Dinner after bath
Play
Bottle
5:50-6 pm bed time
Tia ;)

It does sound like it's the teeth causing these issues (along with the ear infection which will be worse when lying down)....we are also having sleep issues with DS who also has his canines coming through! :P
Teething can also make LO's more tired & cause an OT loop which sounds like he's in.
-
Ok so over all, do you think my actual routine looks ok?
Yeah I know the ears aren't helping things but in saying that he has only just finished another course if anti biotics, his 5th course in 5 months :( so it's kinda out of my control a bit there.
-
Hopefully the specialist will help with his ear issues!
As he's short napping & OT then you could try pulling the nap a bit earlier to see if he sleeps for longer, maybe try 11.30am.
-
Ok thanks... :)
I know it probably seems as though I'm expecting a lot if he has sore ears but trust me itsbeen 7 months almost of nw etc etc that I'm really tired. And I'm just feeling lost and confused and almost ready to break!! I am so run down due to all this no sleep business so I really hope there is an answer somewhere too!!!!!!
I just struggle to think thar it's ALL ear and teeth related for this long.
Thanks for your advice on all of it I'll keepyou posted.
-
Or you could try two naps - especially after a 4am wake ::) ((((hugs))))
Do a short morning catnap and them an afternoon nap say at 1pm.
Has he been given the same antibiotics or have they changed them?
-
Thanks :)
Today will be a write off due to day care but I'll try that when I'm home next on two days.( home all day I mean!)
No they gave given him the same anti biotics all the time.. I can't wait for next fri so we can go and see If this is really his problem poor kid it's so cruel. And I don't mean to sound un sympathetic about it at all I understand there must be no pain like it I'm not that mean! Just gets overwhelming when it's all coming down on you all the time !
I really hope this improves for him soon :(
-
I would be asking for a different type of antibiotics. It sounds like the ones he's been given aren't clearing the problem properly.
And I don't mean to sound un sympathetic about it at all I understand there must be no pain like it I'm not that mean! Just gets overwhelming when it's all coming down on you all the time !
Don't worry, we totally understand where you are coming from. But I think you perhaps should see if the ears are still a prob and if so get some *different* antibiotics.
(((((hugs)))))
-
Thanks for being so understanding :)
You know I had never thought of getting a different kind of anti biotics I had thought if getting a repeat and giving him a double course but nevr thought of that at all! I'm such a practical person so it's weird I didn't lol!
Thanks for the tip ;)
