Title: Simple snack ideas
Post by: Lemonthyme on October 27, 2011, 20:22:24 pm
Ok, I'm a little stuck.  I don't like giving my son refined sugar, especially for snacks.  I often give fruit or dried fruit but my 17 month old still has pretty sticky poos so I'm thinking I might be overdoing it.

I came up with the idea of giving popcorn to him which he loved (here's some instructions:  http://mamacook.blogspot.com/2011/10/popcorn-for-toddlers-and-adults.html ) but it doesn't keep for long.

I have loads of sugar free muffin recipes but they're still sweet and I'd prefer to give something savoury if possible.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

Will he eat veggie sticks?  Sweet potatoes?  Rice cakes?

No to the veggie sticks, he's not much of a 'stick' kinda guy when it comes to fruit or veg.  No to rice cakes (but I'm with him on that one).  How could sweet potatoes be snack food?

I used to keep a bowl of roasted fingers of BN squash or sw pot in the fridge. A good send for us for a dinner or a snack. He has gone off them now though  >:(

What about savoury muffins? Ham and cheese? Grated courgette or carrot?

Fingers of toast?

Would you give any of those organix snacks? Oaty bars, sweetcorn rings etc

cheese and pineapple chunks

a fromage frais or yoghurt

I'm a bit scared about salt content over a day but I think I'm going to have to ease up a bit (I think I get too paranoid about this.  My sister who is a doctor said to me the other day she didn't think about the salt content of the meals she gave her daughters once!)

I think it has to be something fairly 'dry'.  My son will feed himself messier things but not always and it has to be a high chair kind of thing.  He is still at that stage of deciding he's done with something and sending it flying.  Very messy and annoying.

One thing I have discovered is dried apple, which he loves which is easy to sling into a pot to take somewhere.  Of course it is still kind of sweet.

I made him some savoury welsh cakes the other day which went down ok.  http://mamacook.blogspot.com/2011/11/savoury-welsh-cakes-for-babies-and.html

The organix snacks (and similar) and low, if they have any added salt or sugar. I know the oat bars use fruit to sweeten it. Olly has one everyday!

I know.  I think I'm a bit control freak about the processed foods though.  I don't like the whole idea of crisps and bars even if they're healthier versions.  I'd rather make my own.  I'm sure when he's in the full on terrible twos though things will change!

I relax for these as our diet is so restricted I can't bring myself to not buy these.

For you there are loads of options though  :)

Breadsticks and hummus?
Pizza slices?
Cheese and crackers?
Marmite sandwich ?

We are dairy free and gluten free here so we are also quite limited.

French toast? Not dry though.

I agree with the oat bars - sweetened with fruit juice or purée.

Roasted chick peas?

Homemade mini quiches or fritatta?
