Title: do you let a baby play with paper?
Post by: amayzie on February 21, 2012, 05:54:27 am
So- sometimes i realise I have no idea what i'm doing here!! Hamish likes to crawl around and find things- including paper and pamphlets, cardboard boxes etc. Is it ok for him to play with those things? Or is it a total no-no- like 'bad mummy alert' stuff?

LOL - no - they are allowed to do that  :). Totally normal to what to learn about things in their environment.

Just watch how much they eat  ;)

Haha, if that were bad mummy alert I'd be in trouble! F loves pulling everything out of the paper recycling bin ::)

Cardboard boxes are the best, especially if you hide things in one first and then leave it casually somewhere for him to find. F is always waaay more interested in something if she finds it somewhere out of the way and thinks maybe she's not meant to have it... But yeah, just watch out if he's teething and tries to chew the cardboard to pieces.

Oh good!! Also- he's getting bored of his toys, and i'm trying to avoid buying EVERYTHING (she says after buying a train, a tuck and a ball today- he had NOTHING like that!!) So giving him 'new' and 'exciting' toys like egg cartons, and   paper towel rolls, and envelopes is a good alternative!

L rips paper napkins to shreds with his teeth as entertainment on our 1/2hr boat trip home on the days I work... I'd say its fine :)

Go for it - wonderful cheap entertainment.  We used to have to 'hide' the newspaper if we wanted to read it!

Nowadays, the boys fight at the weekend over who is going to go downstairs first thing in the morning to pull the papers from the letterbox.  A bit like the race to the doormat to pick up the post!

I left an envelope on Sophie's highchair tray one time, and she ate more than half of it before I realised  :P
