Title: FF during first 2 days of life....what did it do?
Post by: *happy* on July 28, 2012, 09:50:01 am
How silly of me to only be asking this question now,but what "damage" would it have done to LO to have gotten 2 FFs durign day 1 & 2 of her life?just curious....she wasnt feeding well from me so they gave her some bottle twice...
I read something about the lining of the stomach/gut or something....cant quite remember..
(i dont mean "damage" but not sure what word to use!)

How much did she take? Its partly to do with stretching the actual size of the tummy as nbs who are breastfed take around 5-10 mls on average per feed yet we expect FF babies to take a lot more per feed. This can lead to problems as babies dont get that full satiated feeling so easily when they go back to breast and then mum can think she doesn't have enough milk.

the other thing is about the bacteria- a lot more good bacteria to be found in ebf babies poos (sweet smelling etc) and therefore, in their gut.

Its so hard in the first few days in hospital. When I had Oscar they literally had the bottle of formula heating on the corridor and he can't have been more than 12-14hrs old as he was born on the Sat night and I went home on the Mon morning and I remember this being evening time, DH was gone, Ozzie was screaming and they were trying to convince me to give him the bottle. I knew a few things then, SOOO much more now.....pity I didn't at the time or I'd have had given those midwives a word or two!

As for "damage", you've overcome that damage by ebf so well done. Your lo now has a very healthy gut, full of bifidobacteria (a bit like the goodness or so called goodness in actimels - more like probiotics) so you've set her up for less bouts of diahorrea, vomiting etc not to mention reduced her chances of NEC which is when part of the intestine dies in infants along with a whole heap of other things so well done you!!!

ps. mind telling me which hospital it was? Out of curiosity.

i agreed to it...i shouldn't have but i did...:(
hadn't a clue back then....i know so much more now...
it was in limerick maternity...kicking myself now that i agreed to it...she couldn't have taken a massive amount coz i was feeding her aswell...they were worried about her blood sugar...it was a nurses' aid that fed her so i didnt see what she took...

don't worry about it now. I was told to give Oscar boiled water and glucose by not only my paed, the HV here but also my mam. He started having jaundice around 7 days old, was worst at 14 days old but was gaining huge amounts, over birthweight and then some at 5days and gaining 1kg a month (2.2 pounds). Turns out it was what I know now as "breastmilk jaundice" and happens to some babies....completely healthy babies.

I gave him quite a few bottles of glucose (he loved it) to "flush out" the jaundice. I know some places here are still doing this with perfectly healthy nbs. So annoying and so hard now when I read about the "virgin gut" but we all only do what we can in the situation we find ourselves.

DS' first milk was 15ml formula :( I didn't even know til after I left hospital but DH ok'd it and fed it while I was still in surgery...

We do the best with what we know at the time. Having BF'd her for this long now will have 'fixed' any 'damage' as Shiv said :) Well done for that! and be gentle with yourself, honey :-*

yep - the exam is the International Board Certification of Lactation Consultants or IBCLC....
So sleepy in this heat...

Please go easy on yourself. The whole glucose water thing is so routine here for bf babies and jaundice. I only found out about its negative effects (keeps the jaundice going longer as the best cure for early jaundice - not like Ozzie had - is colostrum and its laxative effects, getting the poops poo'ped).

we do what we need to for survival, both my boys had to start with FF both were born super hungry post c-sections and my milk took a long time to come in, they both got EBF following that..
they are both fine.

so please dont beat yourself up about it....

Dd1 was in special care for a few days after she was born and they tube-fed her formula in the time she was away from me - I don't remember having a choice in that. However, I. Haven't beaten myself up about it - it was apparently the best thing to do at the time, so that was the decision that was made. I ebf her till 14 months and she has never had a tummy bug (she's nearly 6 now), so I don't think the formula was the end of the world.

thanks so much...really do feel better....ye're right, the nurses told me she needed it,so i just agreed....i was so groggy from everything i didnt think so question it....

shivi-best of luck again with the exams...dont mean to sound dramatic, :) , but the LC i had come out to me in the first week was nothing short of an angel!!!!she solved all my problems & allowed me to have the wonderful experience of being able to continue BFing...honestly couldnt speak higher of her or her profession!to be able to help create that special bond must be so rewarding.x

Shiv, I think the formula feeding straight after birth is pretty popular here. Thats what happened to me  (at a supposedly pro-breastfeeding hospital) and to my friend at another hospital. The MW said the baby was extremely hungry after trying to feed from me for about 1 min (I was post c-section so couldn't move to accommodate LO) and gave him formula. She got formula till my milk came in 2 days later.
As to the glucose thing, the ped told me to drink the glucose when I started BFing to get rid of the jaundice. Just for interests sake, do you think it could have helped or was it just a bunch of bull?
