My milk seems to come out way too fast for my 6 week old. It sprays out really fast. She is overwhelmed. It might be called over active letdown. Has anyone ever had this problem with fast flow problem. What have you done? Is there anything to do?

I had this problem and was advised to try hand expressing a little milk before helping DD to latch on. This is supposed to help reduce the pressure a little. I was never very successful with this though - good luck

I have had this with all 3 of my kiddos. Ugh!! I know something that helps is to feed in a more reclined position with baby kind of on top...to help with the gravity :)

I also have this issue. The reclining position seemed to be the best solution for me and DS. Now at 3 months he doesn't seem to mind the overactive letdown as much, though he sometimes pauses with his mouth open, as if to catch his breath, and then continues. Makes it a bit of a mess to feed him, but he's used to it now!

I had this at the same stage - it sorted itself out after a few weeks though.

I have an overactive letdown too, and I pop her off once I feel the letdown and catch the spraying milk in a burp rag or towel. Then I put her back on when the milk slows down. I have only recently stopped doing this (she's 4mo) because I noticed that she no longer gulps when eating, so I think she is handling it much better. In fact, I think now she prefers the fast letdown because she will fuss sometimes if the milk is taking a while to letdown.
It can be really frustrating (esp in the MOTN), and you will end up with BM on EVERYTHING! But it is something that I think most LOs get used to by 3-4 months.
Do you also have an oversupply? When I was out on maternity leave I had oversupply and the fast letdown. I had to go to block nursing for a while to get the supply under control, which did help a lot.

I have this same issue. My DS is 5 weeks old. I also block nurse over night and recline once he's latched on. Another thing that seems to be helping is when I feel the letdown to close my eyes and take deep, relaxing breaths. Fine at night time - a little bit more tricky when DS1 is around..."Mummy why are your eyes closed?"
Problem not completely solved but definitely improving.

I also do the deep breaths for letdowns. I think it helps!

I am just checking are the signs for over active let down gulping, comng off and fussing and bad wind? My dd2 is experiencing all of this now. She is 4 wo and often leaves me covered in milk and seems to be struggling to keep up. Never had this problem with dd1!

Yup, all those signs sound like an over active letdown. Getting covered in BM is especially fun! Does it spray everywhere when she bobs off?

Not quiet a spray but I get very wet! She has not been latching properly as a result as it is falling in to her mouth. I am really noticing it today as she is not interested in feeding.
