We have come to realize that DD simply cannot have cow's milk and at 26 months, I am looking to take her off of formula. I will be looking for a fortified option and would love to have some good fats/protein if possible too.
What are your thoughts/experiences?
Thanks :)

Almond milk I found very thin and often had traces of soy or other things that E reacted to. I can't say enough great things about coconut milk. I'll find the brand we were using but Thrifty's and Superstore carry it. I've even thrown it into the ice cream machine and made her coconut ice cream.
-
I am following along as we're looking for options for DS2 since we think he might be reacting to cow's milk and have taken him off it. He will drink the almond milk sometimes and take it in his cereal, but I have tried mixing it with coconut milk and he didn't like it at all.
-
Em we had to start E with the chocolate stuff (I know I know lol) and gradually weaned her onto the plain. It was painstaking but worth it.
Coconut milk is also great for baking with.
-
No idea about nutrition for toddlers but when I was dairy free I really enjoyed oat milk in cooking and in my coffee.
I hated rice milk ;)
What is hemp milk!?
-
Hemp milk and coconut milk are my favorites.
Both have better nutritional profiles (IMO) than any of the others in terms of healthy fats. Both also act more like milk in baking/pudding, etc than any of the others. Be careful with Hemp milk as the amount of sugar added varies wildly among the brands. I like vanilla flavored w/o too much sugar added to it.
Our go-to milk sub is coconut milk. To save money (and avoid sugar), I buy native forest organic coconut milk (in BPA free cans--I buy from Amazon--also in the Asian section of the grocery store) and dilute it 1 part coconut milk to 3 parts water, blend briefly and . . . voila . . . coconut milk beverage. I use undiluted coconut milk in place of evaporated milk, whipping cream, etc. It makes lovely cream soups as long as you add enough salt to counterbalance the coconut flavor.

I like coconut milk but the drinkable kind that we get locally isn't fortified, so we go with almond milk. I've heard hemp is also pretty good in terms of nutritional profile but it just tasted weird to me. Not only rice milk super low in fat (so bad for little ones) there are concernswith arsenic levels in rice.

The arsenic bit worries me too but I admit I haven't really looked into it much to see how valid of a concern it really is.

Oat for us. Coconut not widely available here, almond a no no as it is a nut, hemp is expensive, rice is not recommended until 5 years old here.

Kara, Alon had a short period where he couldn't have dairy and I gave him Spelt milk. It was the only one I could find without salt and sugar in it.
-
We went with coconut milk as it was the only one that I could stomach without wanting to throw up! Ds has never had anything else and he drinks it very happily. I have been able to substitute it for cows milk in everything without having to adjust any amounts, so from that perspective it is brilliant too - the brand we have is Kara! http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006ISU29M/ref=asc_df_B006ISU29M11506707?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&tag=googlecouk06-21&linkCode=asn&creative=22206&creativeASIN=B006ISU29M
Buntybear - if you want to try it, it is available in Sainsburys and waitrose definitely, and I'm guessing tesco as well. It's with the uht milks.
-
Thanks, only at my local sainsburys very recently and Olly didn't like it after 2 years of oat. I love coconut and even I found it rich!
-
Clazzat - that's too funny! No Kara brand here ;)
Vicki - do you buy the So Delicious or Coconut Dream? I don't think either are fortified in Canada...
ETA - I just remembered about Silk brand - it's fortified in Canada ;) YAY!
-
So, mixed in 1 oz of coconut with her 4 ozs formula - nope, wouldn't touch it.
But, the smoothie I made was a hit!
-
Try oat? It's quite nice

Negligible fat content ;) The fats are really the only reason I am pushing any sort of milk - DD takes a multivitamin to cover Vit D and her calcium intake already... though extra calcium is always a good thing! She doesn't like anything fatty really, even adding olive oil to things will cause her to refuse...
-
Kara we use the Coconut Dream. It has 5g of fat per serving but everything else is negligible for vitamins and protein.
-
I did see that one and really, it would be just fine considering DD does eat quite well for a toddler (she isn't super picky and loves veggies thankfully!)... and it comes in the nice and convenient 1L tetras... hmmm... since DD isn't a huge fan, I may give it a try!
Is the chocolate one good? Seems that the coconut flavour is quite strong in the plain version and DD isn't a fan... she does love chocolate Rice Dream though!
-
The chocolate one is so yummy that I've used it quite a bit with just some sugar to make into ice cream in my machine. I would have a swig of it whenever I poured some for Emma.
-
Was just on the Hain Celestial website... they have an unsweetened too! This might be the trick with my oddball - she seems to prefer things that are unsweetened... I assume because her formula isn't sweet?
Will give it a go tomorrow!

i can't do your poll because i use a combo of oat and almond (mix it together in his cup). we used hemp and oat milk for quite a while for the extra fats but now that DS is over 2 i nixed the hemp milk and switched to almond.
