Title: DF - how much and how long should LO stay asleep for after?
Post by: Pompeygirl24 on February 21, 2013, 10:43:53 am
My LO is just 4 months but still quite small.  I have been doing the DF for a few weeks now.  We have been doing it in different ways, me just bf, or partner using EBM, or at the moment we are doing a mixture of both to keep up my supply at that time of night but also 3oz of EBM so I am certain LO has had sufficient.  I'm not sure if this is too much?

After this he then wakes about 0100/0130 -sometimes I can shh/pat to sleep or but in paci other times I have to feed which is happening more often, and he does actually feed quite a lot.  It wasn't so long ago I could get him to go to at least 0400 but I can't seem to do this anymore.

He has good naps in the day and he can resettle if paci put back in or I shush/pat, although this is more difficult for the last nap but he will do it.

After he has a feed about 0100 or whenever he wakes he then doesn't want another till about 6ish and I wouldn't say he wanted a whole feed.

So my queries are is there a certain amount of milk advised for DF, and is waking 3hoursish afterwards expected.  I keep thinking it's not and he should be able to go longer with the DF inside him.

How was he feeding at night before you started the dream feed?  Was he sleeping for a longer stretch of time?  The dream feed can upset some LOs sleep -- you're better off just skipping it if that turns out to be the case -- while it worked quite well for my dd1 and my ds, my dd2 slept much better without it.  You can try altering the time of it by about 15 minutes in either direction (though keep it before 11) to see if that makes a difference.  As for amounts of milk, I think people generally do it as a full feeding -- I bf all of mine (no bottles) and I just treated it the same as all of our other feedings.

Thanks Erin, I've dropped it the last couple of nights and he's slept much better.
