Title: Desperately need some eyes - super tired with 27m olds wonky sleep!
Post by: HenaV on October 31, 2013, 07:41:21 am
Hey there,

I need some eyes! R is 27m (28m on 8th Nov) and her nights have just completely gone wonky and I'm so tired I can't think straight to be able to
Start working it out iykwim?

Her last few days have looked like this:

NW: 1.15-3.15 (meds) - chatting, moaning
WU: 6.15
Nap: 1.15-2.45 (1.5)
BT: 6.40 (asleep by: 6.50) meds before bed

NW:1st heard @4.05- grizzling. Don't know how long awake for. Not happy and chatty. Meds@4.10 - necessary?
WU:6.15
Nap:1-2.30
BT:6.50 (asleep straight away)

CO: 4.15
WU: 5.20 (OT???) Really big poo discovered when I got her up
Nap:1.15-2.45 (didn't want to go up to bed OT? Asleep within mins of getting into bed
BT:6.30 - out for the count (calpol)

Last night/today so far...

NW: 1.15-3.50 (calpol and calprofen)
WU: 6.35

So factors that may or nay not be significant:

1. Clocks went back 1hour last Sunday
2. Not sure what's going in with her molars - she was cutting them but won't let me look in her mouth so I don't know if that's a contributing factor
3. When she wakes in the night or early - she is not happy
By the sounds of things in the First instance, then she'll chat away, sing etc and after a while she starts to get whinging etc - trying to go back To sleep I would say.

She used to sleep 2h in the day (usually capped)and around 11/11.5
At night. The last few days she's cut down her nap
Her self to 1.5h. She's more than ready for bed. I wondered if it might be developmental - her speech is coming on at a rate of knots re: longer sentences etc

So any thoughts? Pleaaaaassseeee!!!!

Tia xx

*UPDATE*

Today she didn't want to go for her nap - "No mummy, Ruby's not ready" so I thought benefit of the doubt, maybe she needs a later nap time. WRONG!! Why didn't I just trust my instincts especially knowing that she is rubbish at handling OT. Any 1.30 and she screamed and screamed - didnlt want to go to sleep. She wanted me to lay with her. She's slept independently from day one and this only happens when she is OT. I also know when she is so wound up WI/WO is a no go, it just makes the situation worse. Anyway, I sat on her bed and she went off in 5mins - I tried to leave too soon which led to a further meltdown and she eventually went off at 2.10pm. I had to wake her at 3.30 to preserve BT (which was 6.50pm asleep by 7pm). No resistance at all to BT *sigh* what is going on?

It does seem like she's OT but not sure why with your routine  ???  When I don't know what's going on with my DD I am inclined to continue to blame teeth until she has all of them (2 to go here!), and failing that developmental.  Covers all mysteries  :P. At this age I tend to ride things out more than try to fix them, although recently I did move DD's nap later.  That doesn't help you though, sorry!  What if you tried nap earlier?  I know she said she's not ready but IME what a 2yr old says wrt sleep is not always relevant  ::)

What is her normal wake up time? Is 6.15am an hour earlier than normal - that would point to it being the clocks.

Is her nap time always been 1.15pm? With that first 2 hour NW then I would prob have tried earlier than that and let her sleep longer. Is she now OT for her naps at 1.15?

Just a thought. 28 months was a long time ago for us and Olly was never very independent so just a brain storm for you x

Thanks ladies.

Yes her WU was usually between 6.45 & 7.15am. The odd 6.15/6.30am WU but no sunshine on the gro clock until 6.45. Her day used to looked like this:

WU; 6.45-7.15 (as a general rule)
Nap: 1.15-3.15 (capped)
BT: 7pm (alseep by 7.20)

So her WU if she has the ridiculous NW is the same but with 2h or more less NTS and is an hour early if no significant NW with the same DTS - go figure!!!!

Her nap has been at 1.15pm for a little while now. We had a wonky period around 23m when I had to pull the nap back to 12,30 to catch up with OT and then gradually moved it to 1.15pm in 15m increments. I think too think she's OT too and  i was aiming for an earlier nap - as i say, should have stuck with my instinct rather than go with what my 2yr old thought was a good idea  ::) I know I know, I blame trying to juggle too many things and sleep deprivation, makes us all a little nuts I guess. I am now not working for a good few days so at least I can try and get her sorted, bless her. It breaks my heart to see her in such a mess. May be I will shoot for 12.30 nap for a few days and see how that pans out. I just pray I don't end up in the dreaded UT/OT loop.

Thanks again!

H x

Ok so after the nap time shenanigans of yesterday she ended up doing this:

Nap: 2.10-3.30
BT: 6.50 (asleep by 6.55/7pm)

AND she STTN!!!!! Just woken at 6am, happily
Chatting. So, what would you do re: nap - 12.30 to get back on track or 'normal nap' of 1.15pm given she SSTN?

I would still go a bit early as she will need to catch up on the OT a bit x

Oh poo! Went for 12.45 and we're in a mess. She was fine until I put her in her bed. Then she kicked off. No Ruby's not sleeping, Ruby's not sleeping in Ruby's bed!!' I've put her back in bed, done WI/WO a couple of times until she's calm. She's out of bed and I can hear her the otherwise of the door saying not sleeping in Ruby's bed. Don't want to go to sleep. She's talking in a whingy voice as opposed to upset so I've not gone in. I hoping she'll get fed up and go to bed. Now she's asking for a tissue or wipe saying she's got a big bogey!!! She's also saying about the door being locked which it isn't - it's shut as it always is and she's perfectly capable of opening it!!

Is this OT/ should have done nap earlier or an age thing??

Driving me nuts!!!

Omg! Getting worse here! I had to go in as she put on the light and started in the draw which has nappy cream and the like. So went in, putt her in bed and emptied the draw and left. She's the  came Out if her room - so back in and put her in bed - did that a couple of times and now she's properly kicking off - shouting "daddy help(!!)" "Ruby don't want to go too bed" jumping up and down about it and all in a gro- bag - go figure!!! I just don't get it. If she's not been tired before she just lays in bed and chats. Can she really be so OT that this is the result????

Big hugs to you MM - I feel clueless

Don't know if to go in or stay this side  of the door?????

*UPDATE* : well i had to go back in, she got upset. A couple more WI/WO and all
Has gone quiet. Goodness knows if she's asleep
But at least she's not having a Hissy fit!! I'm trying to tell myself that I've done the right thing -remaining firm and consistent but it's just horrid!  I'm scared though to give in and stay with her for where it will lead given she's always been an independent sleeper. Why do I feel like I'm
Abandoning her? :'(

Did she have a nap?

If an earlier nap isn't working then go for a later one! Olly would get like this when he was UT. He was textbook in that when he got like this I tried it 15 mins later and shaved 15 mins off the other end and did this till he dropped his nap.

Might be worth a shot. She eventually gave in at 1.45 and I woke her at 3.30. I put her to bed just now (6.50) and no fuss at all?

I thought later which is why I did 1.30 yesterday I.e 15m later and that was no better. I wondering, depending on how tonight goes, whether I try 12.30. The reason I say that is unlike yesterday she was happy to go up for a nap today, have her nappy done, gro- bag on and be out in bed. The issue only arose when I went to leave the room - then she wanted me to stay with her and when I said no, then she was saying she didnt want to go to bed???

Thanks ladies, the hugs are much needed and appreciated!

It's come so out of the blue I didn't think it could be anything to with suddenly different sleep needs. The only thing I have considered doing is pulling the nap back to 12.30 just in case OTs playing a part. Or is that a bad idea?

Well after an ish night last night, I went
For a 12.30 nap (admittedly full of dread!!) BUT she went into bed no bother, I left no bother, she chatted for 10mins and then asleep! Woohoo!! Plan to rinse and repeat for 2 more days and then think about pushing out by 15m

For those following along, I did change up the nap routine a bit by recruiting DH to take her up, nap it change by way of distraction re: fact it was nap time. She did ask for me to put her to bed which I did. Tbh, I don't know if the slight distraction or earlier nap did the trick but I just thought it was worth mentioning!

The last 2days naps have gone well BUT with NW/ew

Last 2days:

Sat:
Nap:12.45-2.45( bed at 12.30)
NW:2.30-4amish (can't be completely sure of exactly how long - I was knackered and she was chatting so I left her to it)
BT: 6.50 (asleep 7.20)

Sun:
WU:6.20
Nap:1pm-2.50 (woke self)
Bt:7pm (straight to sleep)

Today:
WU: 4am ???????

She was moaning as tho in pain or trying to get bk to sleep. I left it fur a bit but then out if fear eye was up for the day gave her meds. I don't think she went back to sleep. If she did it was only for a short while as she was definitely awake by 5am. She's still in bed now, waiting for Mr Sunshine (got to love him!)

So I guess 2 Qs - 1. Do I keep Riding it out?

2. Today - what do I do? My inclination is to car nap at 9.30 (capped at 20m) to get through the morning and nap as normal around 1pm with 6.30-7pm BT depending on how's she's coping and naps.

Any thoughts?

Could you not just do an earlier nap and an EBT...help her catch up with any OT?

well M used to wake at about 5.30am when we first went to one nap so I did an 11am nap. I would aim for 11/11.30am, let her nap as long as she wants (up to 2.5) hours and then BT around 6.30pm ish based on the nap - what do you think?

Ps. Just read back, realised i said I was working, I

we had an AWFUL night...ended up sleeping on the floor beside his crib - only way he would settle after numerous NW and a 4am WU...

Fingers crossed they both work it out soon...

Aaah, big hugs to you both, it's just the pits isn't it??!!??

Bleugh is the right word!! To be fair, it most definitely have been worse given how things have been lately. She mucked about asking for more food etc and any delay tactic you can think of so didn't go to sleep until 12.10 and then had only 1.5h!! Bed at 6.20 and out like a light, let's see what tonight brings!!!

Good luck mamas!!!  :o

How did you do ladies? Shocking night here - bring in the caffeine!!

BT:6.20 (out like a light)
NW: 11.35pm - crying out no no no (meds???)
2-3/3.30 - chatathon (sentences I didn't even know she had!!)
WU: 5.50 (currently practising counting and telling Mr Tunshine (gro clock) off for still bring asleep!!)

I'm trying my best to laugh and make light of the OT ness but I hope to hell this cr@"p passes soon and my angel/textbook girl returns!!!!

Think I'll try the same as yesterday and hope for a longer nap. Though might struggle with 11.30 nap with what we have planned for the morning  ::)

uggh, not fun :(
I would aim for a good nap again like you said and then maybe a BT earlier would work? I can't do EBT's for M but I think they can work for Ruby?
We had a good night but another EWing. I am just going to keep plodding along with the same routine for a few days and see if she sorts herself out. Otherwise I will be posting for help!

Lol! Bless you, feels like such a puzzle doesn't it?!?. Yep, EBT does work for Ruby. Shame about her naps though. As you know I can usually rely on her napping brilliantly to help combat the OT - I know 1.5h is not short for most but here it's not great. Fingers crossed for a 2.5h whopper eh!

Have a good day x

Well, we had an OK night...
DS is in a new room at nursery (with the big kids) so lots of activity - he was exhausted when he got home and the educator told me he woke up sad from his nap (defo OT)...
So, BT at 7pm..asleep within a few minutes.
Slept thru until 5:30am...I tried to resettle but he didn't sleep. Was content in his crib until 6:02am when he kept calling "mummy"...
So, another EWU for us too.
Might have to post my own thread for some help....might need a tweak...

we seem to be stuck on 1.5 naps too Hena. I did not mind, in fact we had started capping to that but with her up so early now she needs to take a longer nap really...frustrating. Think I may end up pushing everything 15 mins later for a few days and then again until we get to a reasonable wake up as she does not tend to do catch ups overnight at all.

Odd you say that, I pushed the nap by 15m today. She still only had 1.5h but at least it's bit such a long afternoon. I think I'm going to aim to have her in bed for 6.30, so asleep by latest of 6.45????

I'm trying not to tweak too much to be honest, just manage the OT. I think a
She's having a developmental leap to be honest. When she woke up this morning she was practising counting. I think that and molars are the cause here. I could be wrong but it's the only thing I can think if re: the silly o'clock chatathons as there is no way she UT!!!

Aaargghh!!! Yep that about sums it up!!!!!  :o

Hi

Thanks for checking in. Yes miraculously (it feels!) the night was better. Wait for it, she SSTN!!! Bed at 6.40 last night, straight out. She co  at 4.40 (mild panic on my part at that point) and then WU at 5.40!! Not brilliant but a huge improvement.

Today she fell asleep in the car at 10.30am but just for 10m and then at 1.30 in the way home - I popped her into bed and she's still asleep (2.30pm). She must be knackered though to fall asleep at 10.30 bless her. I'm aiming for 6.45-7pm BT depending on nap and just praying that she's turned a corner. Saw the half year developmental leap on your thread. I was wondering if something like that was going on in light of Ruby's chatathons!! Let's hope they all get straight soon eh!

Ok, so this is where we Are...

Yesterday, no nap and 6.05pm BT - asking to go to bed and put for the count

NW: 4.10 am - chatting but saying its ouching - thought maybe teeth - meds. Nôt sure how long it took but she went back off
WU:6.45

Today DH had her - took her swimming to ware her out. In the car for 12.45, asleep By 1.15pm, transferred successfully to bed - slept for another little while. Total nap:40m. Stayed in bed until 2.45 chatting and telling her lovie off for not lying down and going to sleep, go figure!

She seems fine this afternoon. Happily flying and sticking at the moment!

So, is she ready to drop the nap, have a later and shorter nap or is this just a crazy phase?????

Any and all thoughts greatly appreciated *sigh*

Tia

^^Makes me laugh!!!
I wish I had an answer...Just popped on to offer HUGS...IMO, I don't think she'd be ready to drop the nap completely just yet...But what the heck do I know!!! M is having an equally strange time of things right now...

Thanks for the hugs hon, greatly appreciated. My gut feeling is that she is not ready either. By 6pm tonight she was impossible and everything was a debate and negotiation because she was so super tired. That to me shows that she can't handle a full day with no nap or 30/40m one!!!

Just put her to bed (6.30) and she's chatting.... Ruby not like it tomatoes, spit it out?!!!!!???? I just don't know what to make of this at all. In fact I've stopped trying! So fed up and tired   :-\

I think depending on tonight /WU might try a later nap tomorrow?

Hope your day/night is going well over the pond x

went off singing at 6.40pm..... Watch this space!!!

Fell asleep in the car at 1.15pm (8h morning A, wowser!), transferred to bed no problems, still asleep (1h5m) - thinking ill cap at 2h to allow catch up and wake her at 3.15 with 6.45/7pm BT - any thoughts?

Well, I'm hoping we might have turned a corner. Put to bed at 7.05 and asleep straight away. She chatted at 4.20 for 20m but it wasn't the usual I'm wide awake animated chatter, she may have even still been asleep. Then, wait for it WU at 7am, woooohoooo!! I on the other hand was tossing and turning from 5am anticipating the worst!!!

So today I though I might do this:

Nap:1.30-3pm (was thinking 2pm but don't want to end up in a mess again)
BT: 7pm ( off by 7.15)

Really appreciate some thoughts. I'm so desperate to keep her on the right track xx

Yay on the good night. Sounds like a plan. Do you think she could have gotten ot from capping nap? Would it be worth allowing cu nap or wakes herself and same BT if she is still ot?

I did wonder about that, she's always better to
Fix UT than OT. Thing is I wasn't capping she was iykwim? Before the craziness her naps were 2h but I thought with the 6 WU and aiming for 7pm BT that I should cap at 1.5h? Tbh - I don't know what to do

Could you let her sleep as long as she wants and aim for 7 BT?

I could do. I think after such a good night, I'm a but nervous to let her sleep past 2h but if she's still asleep maybe she needs it. Things have been so bad it feels for such a long while, I'm so scared of messing it all up

That's what I was thinking. My original plan was to cap
At 1.5h now that she's had a good nap yesterday and a good night last night?

Hey ladies.

Well things are greatly improved thanks. Yesterday, she napped 1.5h, bed at 7pm (asleep by 7.15). She was crying 'no no no' at 4.17am - I gave her calpol. She won't let me look In her mouth so I don't know if it's  still molars bothering her but didn't want to risk her staying awake. Anyway, pretty much back to sleep
Straight away and awake at 6am.

Today she napped 2h (1.20-3.20) and had to be woken
- in think perhaps on account of the longer morning? Anyway, put to bed at 7.05 and I think she's asleep now (7.10). I'm not sure whether letting her have 2h was a good idea or not. My thinking is to allow her 2h if she needs it and see how works with NTS for the rest of this week. If it's cutting into her night, to start pushing the nap out to 1.30 and cutting it to 1h45m/30m depending on how R responds.

What do you reckon?

Sounds like a plan hon.

Dk if this helps cos my dd is only 23mo but since getting back on track after canines she's gone back to her old routine. I'm not capping naps or waking in am and as long as I get a times right she seems to be SR her total sleep needs...so she has been doing 1.5 nap and 12h nights and yesterday and today 2, 2.5h nap respectively and 12 h night again last night....she is HSN tho and ive found waking her always leads to ot...

Is R HSN? Dyt this approach could work with her? I'm just thinking that if she's getting over ot capping may prolong the ot?

Post by: HenaV on November 11, 2013, 21:00:27 pm
Tbh, I don't know if she's HSN - I've always thought she's slept well on the whole?? I try not to cap with R unless I really have to because she does get OT easily and does not handle it well.

Its difficult to decide isn't it? Well if she has a bad night after you capped nap yesterday you could see how she gets on without capping? Fxd for a good night tho xx

Bugger, bugger, bugger!!

She was shouting out 'no leave it' at 4.30, didn't sound distressed so I left her to it. By 5am it was apparent that she was awake - moaning so
I gave her meds (I feel like I give them to her willy nilly at night out of fear she won't go back to
Sleep - can't be good?) all quiet for a bit but 5.30 and she's still awake. Bit of chat (not wide awake animated chat) followed by silence???

She seems to wake (even if it's briefly) around the same time -  between 4.15&4.30- habitual? Or is this the result of yesterday's 2h nap she had to
Be woken from?

It's 5.40am and I'm not sure she's going to go
Back to sleep  :'(

oh yuk :(
Well it is either teeth or the 2 hour nap I would imagine, hard to say which. Can you see molars coming in?
So hard isn't it, feels never ending.

Yep! Judging by the tears and attidude she didn't go back
To sleep!!! My only saving grace is that she waits for mr sunshine to call me!

I'm wondering whether it is teeth given how tired she was yesterday day - Mil Said she was out cold when she went to wake her at 3.20. The problem is won't let me look in her mouth so I just don't know. And she went to bed, asleep in the usual time with no chatting?

Re: today, we have to take SD to school this morning so I imagine she'll fall asleep on the way back. So If she does I reckon I'll probably stick to Normal nap and BT. So tired if thinking about this *sigh*

Hope m had a better night x

HSN would be sleeping around 12 hours at night, poss 11.5 and still having a 2 hour nap....the average is 1.5 nap, 11-11.5 at night x

I think then she us bordering on being hsn. Before this madness she consistently slept 2h DTS and 11.5h at night.

Today, she did fall asleep as I anticipated in the car but bit until 9.55. Mindful of not wrecking the day, I stopped off on the way so she got 10/15m max. In then put her to bed at 1.20 asleep by 1.30. I had hoped she'd wake By 3pm, she didn't so I woke her at 3.15pm as I was worried to leave her later. She was horrid when I 1st got her up - teary and grotty. She's ok now though, just a bit tempremental.

Was thinking of sticking with the 7pm BT?

MM - I saw from your thread things were still pooey  :-\ big ((hugs))

Ps. Got a glimpse - bottom back teeth defin coming through, bit sure about top ones

She sounds ot to me hon...dd was doing the same with her canines. I pd for naps and BT slightly ut and didn't cap naps or wake in am. But tbh no tweaking worked until teeth cut. I just did what I could to minimise ot....

Hugs hon xx not looking fwd to molars!

Have u tried doing dream meds around 2.30/3 so she doesn't fully wake? I was giving ibuprofen cos it works quicker and is more effecrive . hth xx

With cainines my alarm was set for 3.30
For an age. Last night when i gave her meds at 3.20 I really thought it would see us through to a decent WU. I guess I should try calprofen - just a unkind to her tummy yk? But I guess lesser of 2 evils. I think she must be OT - 5/5.30 WU are typical of OT for R, chatting between 1-3am
UT. Also, her  temprement says it all!!!

Tbh, I've always like you managed OT during teething as opposed to
Tweaking. I think where it's gone wrong is this regression / developmental thing which has thrown me. Doesn't help when your so tired to try and think straight!!!

So based on your suggestion of slightly UT naps and BT what time would you do nap and bed. Her usual nap is 1.15/30 and BT at 7pm. There is a chance she'll
Fall asleep in the car at this morning as we have to go around 10 and it's about a 20m journey

I know you're having your own sleep problems - really appreciate your support xx

I'm not sure hon :-/ I'm not great with set times. But if she takes an am cn could you do normal nap time and aim for 6.30 BT so its 13h day? Sounds ambitious even to me!

Hugs honey x it really is pants when nothing seems to work. Def try ibuprofen. Calpol does nothing in motn for dd x
