Title: Is there a 2.5yo sleep regression?
Post by: ENMS on May 15, 2014, 01:37:54 am
In the past few weeks DS as been taking forever to fall asleep and / or having EW.  Some nights he's been getting as little as 9h of sleep.  He'll be 2y6m in early June. I'm trying to figure out OT or UT but I can't seem to get a pattern of it, is it worth it to work on his routine or this shall pass?

I think we had one at that age.  Or more like growth spurt causing sleep disturbances.  Probably OT or OS from the growth.  hugs!!

LOL no worries Sara... 4 IS crazy though, for so many reasons!!! ;)

He naps from 1-3, that's been pretty stable for a while.

BT is usually at 7:30 but can be as late as 8 depending on the routine that night. I've tried earlier BT at 7 but it doesn't help him fall asleep earlier, except if he's really tired for some specific reason. I'd say on average it takes him about 1h to fall asleep lately. He's usually not 'disturbing' i.e. he stays in his room, will sing, talk, flap his feet on the wall, etc, but not requiring external help from us.

His normal waking time used to be 6:45 but now it's often earlier, I guess from the OT that's creeping in. Last night BT was at 8, he fell asleep maybe around 9:45, he cried out at 5 but fell back asleep until 6:20. Short night!

What would you tweak?

Nice to see you Elise!  Just been reading along and I'd shorten the nap I think, 2h is quite a lot for his age.  You could try pushing it later by 15-30 mins and then waking him at usual time so effectively increasing morning A time and capping nap.  Might be worth a go?

Nice to see you too Katherine - and congrats on the pregnancy!!! :D  I haven't been around enough lately - life just goes so fast!

Problem is, I can't control the nap at daycare. So 5 days a week he will continue with the 2h unless he shortens it by himself :(

Maybe on the week-end I could cut it short? would it be enough you think? or maybe I could make bedtime later during the week?

Ah ok I see, will they not wake him if you ask?  I know they won't in a lot of places though. In that case I'd probably go for pushing BT later and hope that if he's a bit more tired the messing around will be shorter. What do you think?

No they don't want to wake - they enjoy the peace and quiet for 2 hours! ;)  It makes sense to push BT later and it's much easier too now that summer's finally arrived.

I was going to post to ask about dev leap but then I saw this thread which answers my question!. My dd is 28 months and is doing the same sort of shenanigans at sleep times. No amount of tweaking is making a difference lol but I wouldn't cap nap as my dd is HSN and is a bear to wake up- she's only napping 1.5-2h ATM and having ew too. What I tend to do during dev leaps is pd at BT an hour early so she can get all the singing and playing done and keep to a 13h day which I think helps minimise the ot.

So, dd's dev leaps have been since 22 mo. Any ideas how long the 2/2.5 yo leaps last? Please don't tell me that they go through this at 3yo too?

I was going to suggest what Katherine said but if daycare Wont change/cap the nap or pd a bit later then your a bit stuck. So yes I'd push BT later or you could wake 15 mins earlier in he he am, and do 15 mins later at night.

Aishi they seem to go a bit crazy at 1/2 yrs and also on their birthdays ::) the half years are the worst!
