My LO is 9 1/2 mon. and was working towards dropping 2nd NF, but recently has had several days where he wakes 3-4 times a night screaming and is only settled by BF. He feeds as long as a normal feed. Could this be growing pains or something else, such as a need for a routine tweak?
-
Might need a routine tweak hun, I'd be careful in letting the BF at night not go on too long in case it develops into a prop. I'd also check to make sure he's taking enough BM during the day too and if that's dropped recently last a massive surge in solids? Oh and of course teeth. Big culprit for NW's here ::)
Want to post what the last few days looked like? X

-he has been eating about the same amount of solids for 2months, no decrease in milk (actually upped his bottles a month ago)
-daycare wakes him at 9:30 so he will nap when they nap everyone from 12ish to2ish. I have tried to keep him awake on car ride home, sometimes successful, but not usually.
-he's always managed between 9.5-10.5 nighttime sleep no matter the BT changes I have attempted. so I figure this is just him.
- i thought teeth but I haven't seen any, he currently has 8 (last one came in 2 weeks ago)
-he has started walking so not sure if that could be a cause
-
Sunday am nap was a little longer than usual, he was pretty whiny this weekend which is unlike him so I let him catch up on sleep. Not sure if crankiness was due to tiredness or something else which could be causing these NW.
Last week his NW were 12:30 and 3:30 on average and two days with only one at 2:30. (I had gotten so excited thinking he was going down to just one NF :P)
-
Would you consider him LSN hun? Has it been discussed before? I remember we had a conversation about your two routines before if I'm right?? He's averaging 12hrs in 24 which is very low for his age.
Has the routine (x2) been the same for a while now? Xx
-
Hey there! It could definitely be a result of him learning to walk. Whenever a big developmental leap takes place, sleep tends to go a little sideways for a bit. Regarding teeth, my DS1 used get one tooth and then the other would follow right behind about 1-2 weeks later so this could also be what's going on. It hard to know if you've had a drop off in supply or not but if you're finding your LO is frequently still hungry after feeding, and this is a recent thing, you might want to consider a bottle top up. Totally your choice.
-
kellyjs- yes we did go over his two routines a while back. He has been on this routine for awhile now. I would consider him LSN, especially nighttime sleep. His daytime naps rarely fall below 2.5 hrs total sleep time though, usually average 3.
lauradj- about two weeks ago i had a drop in pumped milk at work, and have just recently gotten it back up to meet his demands for daycare. Due to the decrease i have now exhausted all my frozen milk. Not sure if this drop was only on pumped milk or if it carried over to breastfeeding, could be. he does okay during the weekends on BF only during the day, the increase on feedings the last couple of days has only been at night....since i don't have any stored milk left a bottle would have to come from formula, which he's never had. So I'd rather not go that route if possible..if it is a drop in supply I'd rather consider upping his feedings or something.
-
One thing we don't want to happen is where he's relying on you to fall asleep at night again hun, that was pretty tough to break of you remember?
We might have to change things up a little wrt the routine. I remember it was hard getting one that worked for daycare, I still think that might be messing you up again like it did last time especially that CN. I'll have a think and come back to you hun ok? My brain is not working well at all today ::) xx

Last night was slightly better, only 2 NF.
recap of last 3 nights:
BT: 8:15
NF: 10:30, 1:30, 3:30
W: 5:45
BT: 8:00 (tired)
NF: 10:45, 1:30, 4:30
W: 5:45
BT: 8:30
NF: 11:30, 1:30 (no feed), 2:30
W: 6:00
-these were daycare days, nothing much changed during his daytime routine.
-not sure if 30 min variation in BT is making that much difference or if it was just a coincidence that last night was a better night.
-
Well done on not feeding on that NW hun.
Have you found the NW's are better on the weekends again like last time? I'm also going to ask for some more eyes on this for you, I'm a little stumped as to what we can do. That CN needs to go on the way home from daycare, then perhaps we can do an earlier BT as I do think it's robbing him of NT sleep. I just need some advice from other people that may have been in your situation.
One option is that we ask DC to push that afternoon nap back a little, but I remember that they have set times if I'm correct? I'm so sorry hun, you've managed to test me on this one! Xx
-
Unfortunately I haven't seen a correlation with weekends vs weekdays and NW.
Thank you for helping out!
He almost always seems tired when I pick him up from daycare and is rubbing his eyes. If he doesn't rub his eyes when I pick him up, those are the days he stays awake on car ride home.
I wonder what would happen if I asked them to not put him down for am nap and move lunch to 11/11:30, Nap 11:45 for his 2 hrs then CN on way home? not sure if this would be too long am for him and if it would help or hurt BT? (only thought of it since he doesn't always take morning nap for them)
-
Oh, sweetie, I could have written your post when DS was 9 months :( this too shall pass
How many days is he in day care? L was in 3 days a week and we did do one nap at day-care and 2 naps at home for quite some time but it looks like he might not cope with that. Unless... does he transfer? Could you maybe do dinner and pyjamas on pickup, let him fall asleep and then BF to assist in settling him to sleep when you get home? Its incredibly hard when they're taking so little sleep at night. Has that always been the case or DYT it could be OT?
Can you write out the "not-negotiables" you're working around so I can have a think?
sure if this would be too long am for him and if it would help or hurt BT? (only thought of it since he doesn't always take morning nap for them)
Its worth a try - it might help the early morning, bring that WU a bit later... I guess the question is why he refuses that nap - is he OS? (that was a major issue for DS and when they made a quiet corner and let him go there before his nap, he napped much better).
Is that 2hr nap capped? If you're going for one nap at day-care, I'd ask them not to wake him. I'd also be prepared that he may take an OT 30min nap. Do they resettle? Most day-cares won't :( but I guess if you asked...
-
He is in daycare 5 days a week. He has always slept less at night than his peers. BT used to be 7:30 with WU at 5:30/6:30 on his own. Over the last month it has moved back to 8/8:30, he refuses and is wide awake if I try earlier.
The last 3 days NW were better, not sure why but not going to complain.
Fri- BT 9:00 (we were out late)
NW:2:30 (up for 1 hr after feed wide awake)
WU: 7:30
Sat- BT 8:00 (screamed and cried for an hr, not sure what was going on)
NW: 1:30, 4:30
WU: 6:30
Sun- BT 8:00 (another night of screaming and refuse to BF for an hour, ??)
NW: 2:30, 4:30
WU: 6:15
the afternoon nap isn't always capped, they have nap time ~12-2, but will let him sleep as long as 2:30 if he is still sleeping. At that point they wake him.
The morning nap he has always struggled with at Daycare, even as young as 6 months he was not always taking this nap. His nap area his in a quiet room.
Not sure what you meant my not-negotiable?
-we leave the house for daycare at 6:30, it is a 45 min commute
- they feed Breakfast at 8/8:30, lunch at 11:30/12
-i pick him up at 4;45, 45min commute home
-
So another rough night, but after last night I'm sure he's teething. No nap on car ride home, started screamin and crying half way home. Tried for early bed time after medicating. After an hour and half of screaming finally fell asleep. Woke up several times screaming. Hopefully after they come through I can get him back to better nights. Teeth are no fun >:(
-
Sorry, I had a lovely long post and I lost it all when my computer disconnected from the net and I couldn't find your thread :(

That's what I meant - just no point suggesting a routine that you cannot do because you've got to be somewhere.
DS did really well with a long first A and a short CN in the car - I reckon that could work well if you could get them to put him down for one long nap at day-care (maybe ask them to put him down first so the nap is as early as they can do given he's got be wake by 6:30ish in the morning) and then either have a CN on the way home or transfer him to bed when you get home depending on how he's going and what time he woke.
FX those teeth cut and stop bothering him soon, they truly are the pits :(
-
thank you for your suggestion.
yesterday he took a 2 1/2 hr nap at daycare, they let him sleep since he has a a rough couple of days, he took CN on way home and was back to normal last night. NW 1, 4:30, WU: 6:30.
no tooth but can see bud now
I'll suggest the early but 1 long nap to daycare.
-
FX that lasts! Keep us posted :)

Glad things are a bit better hun. Teething pain tends to start before we see anything then all becomes apparent!! And thanks Bec for helping too :-*
