Title: Almost 1 year- need nap advice/routine check
Post by: CCCmom27 on September 07, 2015, 00:34:56 am
H will be one on the 16th.  Friday we started STing (last baby so I've let the props go longer) He doing really well and tonight I just sat on the floor beside his crib he rolled around a bit then fell asleep, but I'm not sure I've got his routine right.  Before Friday some days he would simply take a couple cat naps in the car while running errands/doing school pick up or on days I didn't have to go anywhere other than to take C to school I would sit and he'd nurse to sleep and sleep in my arms for 1.5- 2 hours then at night I'd nurse him to sleep lay him in his crib and he'd sleep anywhere from an hour to 10 hours one night ( :o ) before waking and he'd co sleep the rest of the night.  He's always seemed low sleep need so for the past 3 days I've been doing one nap since he can do a long A time (unless in the car).  The problem is on Tuesday and Thursday I have to pick G up from pre-k around 1230 and that's right in the middle of nap time.  Any thought what I should do those days?  Next issue is I'm not sure if he's OT because he woke a lot last night.  And I think I recall from the other 2 that waking before midnight is a sign of OT but maybe he's too old for that?  I also didn't want to go cold turkey on nursing at night so since we're starting out if it's been 4 hours or more I'll nurse him but if not DH resettles.  Worked perfectly the first night and he did a couple 4 hour stretches but last he woke more so I'm not sure if he's OT?  I tried an earlier BT tonight.  Here are the last 3 days routines but I didn't write down the NWs

Friday
6am awake
1108 in crib for nap not asleep till 1142
1218 awake resettled asleep again 1222
130 awake
705 asleep
woke every 4 hours nursed laid back down

Saturday
620 awake
1110 in crib 1117 asleep
1200 awake resettled 1212 asleep again
1256 awake
635 asleep
woke a lot nursed a couple times

Sunday
600 awake
1145 fell asleep in car
1220 moved to crib resettled
120 awake
620 in crib
635 asleep

I'm thinking his A times might be too long even though he handles them fine?  Any thoughts on naps/routine would be appreciated!

At this age the lack of independent sleep skills be the cause of NWs. The routines you posted don't look too bad really.   I see you are starting to put him in his crib?  But upto now are you always feeding to sleep for naps or falling asleep in the car? If so I'd say the NWs are just him waking and not knowing how to get back to sleep without a feed so it may be worth resettling without feeding.

Yes he is now falling asleep in the crib but you are correct that up until Friday he always fell asleep nursing or in the car. Do you think it would be better at this point to not nurse at all at night?  I was having dh resettle when it hadn't been 4 hours but it's not going so well so I will probably take over tonight. Any thoughts on naps when school run is right in the middle?  Today I was going to try w2s and just wait in there to help him back to sleep as quickly as possible.

What time do you leave for the school run and what time do you get back? Take it you can't transfer to the crib and he'd stay asleep like Sunday?

At night what I did was pick a time so say 2am and if they woke before that then I resettled and once that was better and less wakings I moved it to 3am and so on. I was too lazy to resettle all night when weaning NFs. The first few nights were the worst but once they got the Idea of going to sleep without a feed it got much easier as we moved the time on.

I need to leave by 1230 and we're normally back by 1 and I have to go inside the school for G so if H goes to sleep on the way there he wakes when I get him out. Maybe eventually I can transfer but at this point I think he'll want to nurse and go back to sleep that way. I had DH move him to his crib Sunday to avoid that. Today he was clearly ready for a nap by 11 and asleep about 5 minutes after I put him in his crib, but he was awake a lot last night.

Do you think 2 is a good time to aim for a NF at this point?  He'll nurse around 6/630 before bed...

Maybe midnight?  My DDs didn't go to bed until 8pm so 2am was a good start for us.

School runs are a necessary pain. If it's only 2 days I'd be tempted to resettled however you can even if it means nursing to get a decent nap.  I don't think you've much option given you have to get him out of the car and I doubt he'd last until after the school run to have his nap as that would be a really long A time.

Meant to ask if there are any teeth coming?

No teeth that I can see right now. So he initially falls asleep easily with me just sitting beside the crib should I go ahead and start sitting closer to the door or wait until he's not having so many NWs? Was asleep at 645 so will hold out on a feed until midnight.

He's doing great! I'd maybe do another night or two sitting beside the crib then start heading toward the door.

How'd the night go?

Not well lots of NWs. We've been sitting on the floor like we do at BT but I think tonight we'll try a chair and see if that makes a difference.  Left early for the school run today and ran a couple errands that I didn't have to get out of the car for so he could sleep longer without being woken. Good news is he slept 40 mins bad news is he didn't go back to sleep on the way home like he has in the past. Not sure if I should do an early BT?  I guess I'll see what he's like later.

Great night last night!  Did normal BT and was asleep at 635.  He did cry out around midnight but was quiet when I got to his door so I left him.  Then woke at 330 I nursed him but he only actively nursed for maybe 5 minutes then I laid him down.  About 20 minutes later he cried out once but settled himself then woke for the day at 6.  So not sure if it's related to the short nap or just a fluke?  Here's what yesterday looked like

640 awake
1150 asleep in car
1230 woke on own before I got him out
635 asleep
around 12 cried out but settled himself
330 woke and nursed

Any thoughts?  When he's sleeping in the crib he generally wakes between 35mins-1 hour and I resettle.  I thought he just couldn't transition but maybe that's enough sleep?  Or maybe he just crashed although he didn't seem OT and could have taken a catnap on the way home from getting C at 345?

Thanks for your help!

And congratulations!  I haven't been on much and just saw your news!

Thanks!!!!

What an awesome night! Well done you guys!

I'd say that is on the lower end of day sleep for 1 yo but if you are getting a 12 hour night the  getting an hour would be ok. It could be once his night sleep is less disrupted that he'll resettle easier during his nap if he wakes but at the minute I guess if he's wakening it's just enough sleep to be getting him through. As you say he could have had a CN but didn't.    What's his form like after his nap until bedtime?  Is he managing ok?

So do you think I should resettle in the crib when he wakes early from a nap or just get him up? I went ahead and resettled today so he slept 1.5 total. I was going to try for a longer afternoon A time as long as he's handling it ok. He was fine yesterday which is why I didn't do an early BT. He always gets cranky as I'm making dinner but then perks up once he's eaten.

Forgot to ask at this age should I still try to keep his days 13 hours or less?

I would try and resettle if you can.  early bedtime never worked here.  Both mine just woke 11.5 hours later! How does EBT go for you?

At this age both mine had a 12.5/13 hour day to accommodate the nap and the amount of A time they needed to be tired enough to sleep well.  But they did nap for 1.5/2 hours so you could likely aim for 12/12.5 day if the nap isn't fab.

Not sure how EBT goes since we have t gotten consistently good nights yet. A couple NWs last night but not too bad. Ran some errands this morning and he fell asleep on the way home at 1030 so only 4 hour A time  :-\. Grouchy this morning so may be teeth moving around. I think I'll try some meds tonight to see if that makes a difference.

No problem things have been busy here as well. I actually forgot to give meds that night and he only woke twice. Once around 2 so DH resettled and then again at 4 and I nursed him. That seems to be the direction we're moving and some nights he doesn't wake until around 4  ;D. I'm honestly not in a hurry for him to STTN. Last baby syndrome... Today has thrown me for a loop though. He had a short late nap yesterday (woke around 2). He was asleep by 705 woke about 40 mins later which I'm assuming is OT?  Then slept til 440 nursed went then cried when I laid him down but went right to sleep but wimpered a couple times then I had to wake him at 810 to take the big boys to school. Then he went to my mom's and she said he was cranky and fell asleep being rocked at 1040 and slept till noon when I called. I guess I'll shoot for normal BT since he napped so early.

Sounds like nights we had here. I never minded that 5am feed. We kept it for long time after it wasn't needed.

How've things been?

We had an amazing nap yesterday 2 hour!  I didn't have to resettle him! He was up til about 8 which worked out well since it was his birthday. He woke at normal time so only had a 10 hour night. Today I had to take a phone call and his was fussy so I let him nurse and looked down a minute later and he was asleep so I laid him down and he slept for 45 minutes before we had to do a school run. Tried to get him down early tonight but it ended up being normal time when he fell asleep. Hopefully he'll catch up some tonight!
