Post by: a_astorga on August 20, 2005, 18:11:21 pm
Hi,

Can someone help me out figure out how much breastmilk I should feed my son?

He eat 3 solid meals a day plus a cookie snack?
How many oz. of milk should he be drinking?

Because of the great variability in the amount of solids that babies take during the second six months, the amount of milk will vary, too. One study found average breastmilk intake to be 30 oz per day at 7 months. Are you asking because you are concerned that your lo takes too little or too much?

Hi,

He takes 5 bottles of about 5 oz. But I've tried to feed him more and he won't drink it. I give him his milk before solids and sometimes wait longer than usual so he would really be hungry, but no go.

As long as he eats his 25 oz for a few more months he will be fine. 30 oz is an average, so I think your lo should be OK. His need for milk will slowly start decreasing and at 11 to 16 months he will need approximately 19 oz, so you see what is the trend.
Right now his milk contributes to 90 percent of his calorie intake while at 1 year he will be getting only 50 percent from milk, if you, of course, keep on nursing that long  .
