Title: Now what?
Post by: Maggiem on August 23, 2005, 17:23:44 pm
I feel silly asking this but I don't know what to do next.  I have a textbook 7 mo ds who eats really well.  He's on pureed/blended veggies (peas, wax beans, green beans, zuchini, squash, sweet potato, mixed carrots/peas, straight carrots) and fruits (pears, peach, nectarines, apples, bananas, blueberries, apricot, cantaloupe) as well as cereal and formula.  He sleeps through the night and has good naps, I'm just not sure where to go from here with his food.  Do I start with meats?  How do I introduce different textures and how do I transition him to table food?  I've tried him with a baby cookie and he liked it as well as pieces of fresh melon and banana.  I'm just so worried about choking.
Thank you for any suggestions!
Maggie

Hi Maggie!

To introduce different textures, you can buy the next stage up in jarred food. If you make your own, you can add texture by pureeing for less time and/or adding less water. Another way to do it is to thicken it by adding dry baby cereal. The guideline I usually see for meat is to introduce it at 8 mo.

If he seems to be ready for finger food, you can help him learn to gum it with cheerios, bits of toast, or anything that isn't slippery. Once he gets the hang of it, you can try ripe fruit chunks or well cooked veggie pieces.

At this stage, I wouldn't worry too much about transitioning him to table food. He'll be there soon enough! For now, enjoy having such a good eater!

Our ped. told us we could start the meats between 7-9 months as she seems ready.  Good luck, and let me know how it goes.

Sorry I couldn't respond sooner.  We had company and I couldn't get to the computer.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I think he's definitely ready to move to meat and yoghurt/cheese, it's me that's dragging my feet.  I make most of my baby food and have made it quite chunky and he does fine with it.  He spits the odd bit out but rarely coughs or gags.  I thought maybe he was just swallowing everything without really chewing but yesterday I gave him little cubes of watermelon and I could hear him crushing them in his mouth.  I'm going to take the next step and start with chicken tomorrow.  I have a food mill so have made poached chicken and ground it fine.  I'm sure in a week I'll wonder what I was so worried about...
Thanks again,
Maggie
