I am new at this (3rd day trying). Just now I was putting Jason down for his nap. I swaddled him, held him 5 minutes, he was relaxed but not asleep. I laid him in his crib and gently patted for 10 minutes. He jolted at 10 min. I kept my hand on his chest. He jolted at 13, 14, 15, 16 min and at 20 minutes his eyes opened up and he started crying.
Also, I have a hard time knowing when to leave him. His room is dark so I can't see his eyes moving, his breathing seems to never slow. Please help!! I am getting discouraged but willing to stick it out with guidance. Thanks!
I forgot to mention he's 10 weeks!

Does he cry when you put him down? If he doesn't - don't pat him, it may be hindering his sleep cycle. And try a night light if it's that dark.

He usually doesn't cry. I didn't realize not to pat if not crying. Just put him in the crib and then what if no shush-pat????

Leave him be. You could leave the room, or sit quietly to find out what he's going to do. You may be pleasantly suprised, and he may fall asleep.

Hang in there.. learning how to sleep is a process. It's a little wonky in the beginning.. but it gets better. Takes practice for both you and your little guy!
