Title: Confused about introducing veg/fruit
Post by: Richelle on October 01, 2005, 14:13:32 pm
HI

My dd is 5months and has been eating cereal (organic oat cereal) for 1 month.  She is having it in the morning(2TBS) and evening(3TBS).  Like this:

630 wake
7 1/2 bottle
730 cereal other 1/2 bottle
1130 bottle
330 bottle
515 cereal 1/2 bottle
730 bottle/ bed

I know she is ready for more food and am not worried about allergies as dh and I have none, my question is when and how much do I introduce?  i think she should be eating at mid day as well but have held off (don't ask me why  :? )  and she sleeps straight through the night, so i was wondering if i should mess with her schedule or wait until she seems really ready?  Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Richelle

Best thing when introducing new solids is to do it at Bfast or Lunchtime so if they did have any problems it wouldnt interfere with nights
Theres loads of threads on here re introducing new foods. Best thing to start with is puree veg like carrot etc always give sweet purees after savory as they arnt daft these little ones and they might reject the savory :) Have alook through the board im sure there is somthing that will help.

Thanks ,

My e-mail is richelle@breezesbythebay.com.  I have read through the threads but am limited for time work/baby ect... and i haven;t foud anything as to when people introduced veg/fruit and how long they waited after cereal.

My dd has also just sprouted her first tooth so maybe throwing a change at her may not be wise, hard to say....

thanks again

Thanks so much for the meal plan - it is very thorough!

I definately do not have time for home preperation of all the food but will definately try to prepare some.  I did buy some prepared organic veg but am hoping to make the fruit myself, or am toying with the idea of the nanny making some of the food, we'll see.

I did try peas yesterday and dd loved them :P  - can't wait to keep going.

Quick question Marika - what is swede? and How do you puree orange?

Thanks

Richelle

No problem,  Swede is a root vegetable similar to celeriac root. Orange needs to be simmered in water for about five minutes. I would be weary about introducing orange too soon, it is known for causing allergies. If you want the vitamin C, add a little orange juice to butternut squash or apple puree.

Me again; I really recommend you get your nanny to make up some of the stuff, if you need recepies let me know. My freezer is packed full. Its great; 15 minutes of work lasts me a whole month, I have always felt a little cheeky buying my carrots in jars when it is so easy to make at home.

Thanks Marika,

It is a great schedule!!  I of course have had to change some of the foods until I can try and fit in a way to make my own food, in order to get the great variety.

How old is your LO?  I have found a fabulous group of ladies over in the EASY forum of moms of April/March 05 moms, we all have so many questions about this solids thing, maybe you could pop in?

Thanks again for the scgedule!

My pleasure, happy you found at least some of it useful. My little Gigi is a week off six months. A textbook baby with a paci addiction. As for the forum, I would love to pop in, I have been reluctant so far as everyone knew each other so I did not want to 'butt in'. Let me know when you are on there and I will join you.

Thanks for the schedule Marika, it is brilliant!  I make my own baby food as well so we won't have a problem following the recipes.

My big concern was if my lo needed cereal twice a day.  I saw you sometimes do, sometimes don't.  I used to feed cereal only at night, than switched to morning and found he'd wake up 1-2 times between bedtime and the dream feed.  I've switched back to evenings and he doesn't wake any more.

In the second 4 weeks, do you mix the baby rice with your purees or serve it seperate?

I also don't know what swede is?   :? But so far he's loving the variety!
Cheers!

Hey, I am away so this has to be quick, I apologise that it took time to get back to you. I had an issue with cereal because she did not really like it and with her reflux I just moved the cereal into her night time bottle, if it works for you to give it in the evening then do, it is basically what I am doing i.e. fruit and bottle for tea and then creal and milk in the evening.

Swede is a root veg, similiar to cereriac or a giant white beetroot, if you can find it I recommend it, it is wonderful mixed with carrot.

Hi again notenoughshelfspace!!!!
I.ve been using your plan for a month now and my dd loves solids, but the BIG issue now is that she seems to prefer solids rather than milk so if I give solids first she will only have 1 oz of milk, and if I do it the other way she eats 3 oz of milk to leave space for the solids (now she knows) so can anyone tell me how to deal with that? I am giving her 3 solids a day and 2 more milk times, she used to have 6 oz of formula and now I dont know how much formula if she is having 2 to 3 oz. of solids (2-3 ice cubes). So should I decrease amount of formula or amount of solids? And how do I give them....?

Hi again! The minimum amount of formula she should be having right now is 21oz. I am not sure how much she takes in the morning and evening but say it is 7oz= 14oz. That is 7oz she has to make up during the day. Use formula to make up cereal, DO offer milk before solids even if it is only 3oz. I would not decrease the solid amount but I would not rush in increasing it. Stick to the amount now and give her milk before and after. At 6 months when the minimum is reduced to 16oz, increase the amounts again. Mine was bad at taking milk for a while and this is what worked for me. Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot on your response... she is taking like 16-18 oz per day. Can you tell me how do I make cereal with milk? She is having 5 oz at 7 am, 3 or 4 at 11, 4 or 5 at 3 and 6 or 7 at 7 and totally refusing df. What cereal and at what time? she usually is having fruit at 11 and veggie at 3 and fruit at 7. Should I give her fruit and cereal with milk like a creamy dessert? I know sooooo many questions, bu she is also a bit fussy and irritable, maybe teething, but her gums are ok although she is eating her fist and babbling a lot... hope you can help again.

No problem, I would give her cereal in the morning now that she is having solids three times a day. Gerber, Beechnut etc........ all make baby cereals which you dilute with milk and then I usually give fruit after that. I am surprised you are giving her solids last thing in the evening, mine is seven months and still only gets milk in the evenings. ( I think this is all spelled out in the plan by the way)

Hi again... doctor told me to give solids like that... she is only having rice cereal which other do you recommend I can give? If it is Gerber can it be stage 2 or still 1? The night fruit is the one she enjoys the most and after that she can have 6 to 7 oz of milk so we have no problem with that. Is it weird to have solids at night or why is it that you are surprised? Well, yesterday night I gave her pumpkin with milk and she ate it great... she is eating better now I think it was a stage or who knows. Can you post your time schedule so I can have an idea of how to manage somethings? Thanks for all your help...
