Title: Confused about feeding schedule
Post by: Emmy's Mum on December 19, 2005, 11:09:01 am
Hi all, I have just recently started my 6 mo on solids (with not too much success atm but that's another post) and am confused as to how to space the breastfeeds and solids. Some ppl have advised to give solids one hr after a feed however, the local baby health centre advises to feed my lo solids right after a breastfeed and to have the whole meal completed within an hour. Could someone advise me as to the best schedule for solids and feeds?? TIA  :)

Hi,

Milk is more important than solids until your baby is about 12 months which is why we are advised to give milk first before solids. With my first child I gave a breastfeed just before solids (and just after if he was still looking for it). It was not until he was more active and we introduced snack that I moved to 3 meal and 2 snacks (in between) that I separated milk from meal-times and gave water with meal and milk (breastfeed) with/as a snack.

At your stage meals are more about having fun with different tastes etc than getting nourishment, IMO. It can tend to feel like you are feeding all day though one way or another

It all comes down to what works best for you and your baby. Like Vicky said, nursing first ensures your LO gets plenty of breastmilk. When Tyler was younger, he never had an appetite right after nursing, so we waited an hour or so to offer solids. We kept him on that schedule until we started whole milk at 1 yr, and that's just what seemed to work best. HTH!
