Title: How do you keep ice off of frozen baby food
Post by: cwolff on December 21, 2005, 03:27:07 am
I made zucchini puree and froze it in individual baby food cubes, then defrosted one today.  It was very runny, almost watery from the ice on the top.  I tried pouring out the runny parts, but that took away almost half the cube.  Anyone else experience this, and what did you do about it?

zucchini always seems to be runny when defrosted (even if in a mixture with other veg...) I add rice cereal to it afetr heating to thicken it up again.  gets in extra calories and iron too!

Hi

I take the cubes out of the trays after they have frozen and store them in a tupperware container.

I used to do zucchini soups and things and they always had this problem, usually if I mixed it up again and warmed it then it would be less fluid again - I think it is just so full of water.

As bec says but try plactic food bags, they take up less room.

I have this problem too - the longer it is in the freezer the more ice it gets.  I put mine in cubes and then in baggies.

I always mix cereal in with the veggie after heating it to soak up the extra water.  Zucchini does have the most water in it of all veggies, so try some other ones and you should have better luck!

I also noticed that the bags I kept in the freezer door got more ice than the ones in the main part of the freezer.

I bought some special ice cube trays that had lids on them - they were superb as they avoided that problem. I think they were off a website called blooming marvellous.

If you are interested let me know and I will double check and give you the link.

I always use the food cube method and then I put the cubes into freezer bags in my freezer.  A book I was reading said that to prevent the ice/frost forming on the cubes you have to make sure there is no air in the bag when you seal it.  She suggests closing the ziploc bag almost all the way, putting a straw in the open part and sucking out the air and then closing it the rest of the way.  Just be careful not to suck up small fragments of the food and start choking!!  It has happened to me!!!!
