Title: Ds won't drink milk anymore
Post by: DJs mummy on February 01, 2006, 19:50:03 pm
I was just hoping someone may be able to offer some advice or just put my mind at rest.  Over the last few weeks Daniel's interest in milk (was on formula) has decreased a lot.  We started introducing him to whole milk and although he didn't seem to love it he would drink some.  Now that he's one we started offering whole milk completely.  But now he won't drink hardly any.  Today he's drank about 3 oz in total (also had about 3 oz on cereal for breakfast).  I have tried offering him formula again to see if it was just the taste but he refused that too.  IT seems to make no difference if it's in a cup or bottle, warm or cold, formula or whole.

Should I persist or should I just let him lead the way?  He does eat a lot of dairy so I know I can get the calcium etc into him that way.  I'm just not sure how much to battle with him over this issue.  I feel as though I've spent the whole day today just following him around with this blasted cup of milk making him cry :-[

Anyone been there?

TIA

Well, I happen to have the American Academy of Pediatrics book on Nutrition in front of me.  I'm going to copy down what it says about Toddler foods and I hope it helps:

"Each day a child between ages 1 and 3 needs about 40 calories for every inch of height, but the amount varies with each child's build and activity level.
Toddlers should have 2 to 3 servings of Dairy, totalling 300-450 calories:  Examples are 1/2 cup Milk; 1 inch cube of Cheese; 1/3 cup Yogurt."

So, as long as your son is getting the proper number of servings of quality dairy a day, he should be perfectly fine.  Some kids just don't like milk.

As the mom of a milkaholic, I haven't been there, but it sounds like your DS just doesn't like milk. And that's okay! Like cwolff said, there are lots of ways to meet that dairy requirement, and chasing him around with a sippy is just going to frustrate both of you. There's an announcement at the top of the Toddler Eating forum that deals with strategies to get toddlers to drink more milk. There may be something in there that helps. If not, no big deal!
