Am I really that out of touch here.........soooo many people I have talked to just throw their bottle in the microwave and I have been using hot water to heat mine........i don't like heating plastic in the microwave......Am i really being silly here or what??

Hi
In the UK we're advised not to heat bottles in the microwave because you can get "hot spots" in the milk.
When I heated DDs bottles I always used either the bottle-warmer (at home) or hot water in a jug. From about 4 months we started giving dd her bottles at room temp (we would premeasure the water into the bottles in the morning and then add the formula when we needed it (using a formula divider). That was so much easier because we didn't have to worry about where to heat the bottle or how long we could have it out of the fridge made up when we were out and about.

I use a bottle warmer, if one isn't avalible (in public) I use hot water. Microwaves tend to make hot spots and I really don't want my LO being burned. Hot water and bottle warmers take longer, but they're safer.
-
If the water was coold out of the fridge, we'd microwave it for 10 secs tp get it to room temp, then add the formula. When out, I'd take a bottle of water and not keep it cold so it'd be at room temp. If you can get lo drinking at room temp fairly early, it'll make life easier.

If your bottles are plastic, like most bottles are, especially the softer kind (e.g. Gerber, Medela) microwaving should be avoided, as plastic compounds can leach into the milk when heated. This is per my naturopathic doctor's advice.
-
this is exactly why I don't want to heat them :)

We used the microwave for our first child, but were told not to because of the hotspots and also because of loss of nutrients. I use hot water for the bottles now. When we went to visit my parents I used bottled water at room temperature. It was much easier and that was what my parents had on hand. We don't use bottled water at home, but travelling and in someone else's home it was much easier.

we used a bottle warmer or a jug of hot water. we have never used a microwave for the reasons posted previously.when we go on holiday or to family i take the warmer with me. we even plugged our bottle warmer in a socket at the airport ,we had a few stares.

So here's one for ya!!
I was told not to use distilled water because it doesn't have any minerals and so on in it, so what do I use......we have softened water and don't drink it ourselves we drink distilled bottled water from a culligan machine.....do I have to keep sterilizing boiling water?? Is the sodium level too hight in softened water......I also think if we don't drink it why should we make our son drink it??
Any thoughts?

I always used either a bottle warmer, or I mixed part boiling water with cooled boiled water and made DD's bottles up like that.
-
I boil the water and pre-make the bottles up and put them in the fridge ready for use. When the baby is ready for her bottle i warm the Pre-made bottles in the microwave then add the formula. I use Avent bottles are they safe to microwave??
-
I use Avent bottles AND I put them in the microwave. Surely if you shake the bottle properly then you don't get hot spots? If you're using formula you heat them with just water in them and then add the formula afterwards if you're worried about losing nutrients?

any plastic I try to stay away from heating in the mo=icrowave, plastic have dioxins that are transmitted from the plastic when heating to whatever food your eating.....my mom has made me wary of this, whether she is over the top i don't know.....but when you think about it all of this cancer and illness is coming from somewhere and affecting those that area healthy and those that aren't .......I try to look at the things we have started doing (I would never spray febreze in my house or on my sheets for example) in the past 30 years and it really makes sense why we are getting more cancers......for example the commercial where the mom sprays her sons train with lysol!!! are you kidding me, lysol is made of chemicals!!!! People blindly accept that because a manufacturer produces a product it is safe....so not the case. That said, can some people be fanatic about what is ok and what isn't - sure. Use your own discretion, talk to your dr, research it, if it seems like a farce than do what's best for you - for me, I just don't like using plastic to heat things with!
Best if Luck and thanks for answering my poll!

I agree with the microwave info from crazycanuck (by the way - where are you from in Canada? We live in Edmonton)
I have also done some research on microwave use and we don't use the microwave to heat anything (unless I'm lazy or in a big hurry - maybe once or twice a month) I read somewhere a little test that was done on seeds. Microwave some water and let it cool and then water a seed (remember elementary growing seeds!!) The seed won't grow. I haven't tried it, but I will when my kids get older for a learning experiment.
I agree you can't be a fanatic about everything, but if you cut back on microwave use and don't use those sprays, you are doing a great service to your family.

hi adoptive mom!
i am in kitchener waterloo.....i live just outside waterloo in a small community called Elmira....mennonite country here!!
Glad to see other people are wary of sprays etc., I try not to be a preachy person though (i don't like them myself) however, sometimes I think it's good to raise issues, particularily when it pertains to our health.
thanks for answering my poll!!

You're welcome Logan's Mom
Keep the info coming on health issues. I too think it is important to pass on these kind of issues. So many people are interested to hear anything that will make their families healthier or safer! :)

All these while the understanding is, microwave is safe. I just received a forwarded email that showed it may not be safe. I have no idea who the originator of the email is though. Can anyone help to clarify whether what is said is true or not... I'm a bit worried...
"Below is a science fair project that my granddaughter did for 2006.
In it she took filtered water and divided it into two parts. The first
part she heated to boiling in a pan on the stove, and the second part
she heated to boiling in a microwave. Then after cooling she used the
water to water two identical plants to see if there would be any
difference in the growth between the normal boiled water and the water
boiled in a microwave. She was thinking that the structure or energy of
the water may be compromised by microwave. As it turned out, even she
was amazed at the difference.
For years I have known that the problem with foods that have been
microwaved, radiation is not what people need to worry about; it's how
the microwave process corrupts the DNA within the food so much so that
the body cannot recognize it.
So the body wraps it in fat cells to protect itself from the dead food
or it eliminates it fast.
Think of all the mothers heating up milk in these "Safe" appliances.
What about the nurses in Canada that warmed up blood for a transfusion
patient and accidentally killed them when the blood went in dead.
But the makers say it's safe. Never mind then, keep using them. Ask your
Doctor. I am sure they will say it's safe too.
Proof is in the pictures --- of these living plants, dying. Remember we
too are also made of Living Cells."

Sorry, not convinced. This project is discussed at length on here

I always microwave the water and then add formula. You don't have to worry about hot spots if you shake the bottle - pretty common sense really. Interesting thought about the microwave and plastic bottles, but what aobut microwave sterilisers? Does that mean they are not safe either. I would have thought that companies like Avent who make microwave sterilisers would ensure that their bottles were then microwave safe or they would risk huge law suits. But then again you never can tell these days though can you!!!!

Thanks for sharing the link, Hsmum! :)

Sure! The study does make an interesting point and I do wonder...It seems there are so many opinions, for and against.

I tend to agree with janelle, you would think there has to be some safety to the microwave, surly?? But i guess its another one of those topics that comes down to - Every One To Their Own.
