Title: Breastfeeding Co-ordinators
Post by: Mamastalawatt on April 10, 2006, 21:39:20 pm
Hiya,

I guess my reason for this post is to encourage new (and any) BF mums to use their BF co-ordinators / lactation consultants as much as they need to when trying to get through the hard time that it can be.

I have been breast feeding for 3 months now (1st baby) and have really been through problems, from the initial soreness and cracked nipples, to severe tongue-tie, to blocked ducts and now interior thrush (excruciating!).  My BF co-ordinator has helped me with every single problem and has been a real help.  When DS was diagnosed with tongue-tie by my GP, he would have taken weeks to get it sorted.  Next day I rang my BF lady(purely to ask for advice on BFing a baby with tongue-tie), and she had DS into hospital to see a consultant (in another health authority too) and his tongue-tie sorted within 3 hours.  The same has happened with my thrush - GP rubbish, BF lady excellent.

In my area there are lots of support groups - I've chatted to a lady from La Leche, and have a friend who's a 'Bosom Buddies' counsellor...all I can say is that if it wasn't for all of these people, I'd have probably given up on BFing in about week 2 when feeding brought tears to my eyes (pain, not joy!)

So I really just wanted to say to the ladies that these people are really worth a try when you're finding it tough...and my BF lady makes a fab cuppa  :D

Beks

I am glad that you are having such a good experience with your LC (and that she makes good coffee!! ;))

I also had a great experience with my lactation consultant and would also recommend to everyone to talk with one!!

Glad to hear going to a professional really helped you. It can make all the difference and doesn't need to cost anything if you use a helpline or a charity like La Leche league.
