Title: how do I warm frozen breast milk w/o making it curdle??
Post by: jules_is_cute on May 04, 2006, 15:53:13 pm
I curdled my frozen breast milk trying to make it warm is there some method to getting it warm.  I am trying to get her to take frozen from me and fresh from granny because the constant pumping is messing up my milk supply.  I was over producing the whole first 2.5 months and was always painfully engorged and my lo suffered from too much lactose because the heavy flow would overwhelm her and she would be put off and stop eating for about 45-60 minutes which got her into the habit of eating every hour or so.  Her tummy was always bloated and she was very gassy.

Now that she's older she handles the flow better and my body has stopped producing so much.  But like I said the extra pumping is creating a bit of a problem.  So how do I warm frozen breast milk w/o making it curdle??

We run ours under cold water first.  Once it is thawed you can slowly raise the temperature of the water.  The key is to do this slowly.  If you start out too warm it will curdle.  I wasted a lot of milk trying to figure this out.

Thanks!!  Right now I'm thawing out for tommorrow in the fridge so I can use 1 oz at a time so as to avoid contaminating an entire pump trying to offer her these bottles.  How long is the milk good for if I thaw it under water?  I know it's 24 hours if thawed in the fridge.

this happened when dd was about 4 months old and we were at a wedding..horrible experience as when i said i thought it was 'bad' dh assured me it was fine when he smelled it. after a few sucks dd refused it when i realize why!!! needless to say i ended up bfing her and she had a tummy ache the whole night - poor girl - as if she didn't have enough tummy troubles already with her reflux!! anyway, i didn 't freeze bm after that but didn't realize about the temp..although when you think about it really makes sense  ::) ::) didn't really have much to offer as far as suggestions - just wanted to share my deep dark secret of a story  :-[
