I was talking to a friend who told me that her health visitor had warned her against using the non driip kind of sippy cups. She told her that the sucking action required for the ones with valves prevents toddlers from speaking when they should. Have any of you heard something similar or is this a lot of old codswallop? I'm reading Tracey's toddler book at the moment and the part where she talks about development happening at the right pace for the individual. Surely a cup couldn't prevent a child from progressing at the rate they should?
Thanks love Vic x

Can you recommend any decent straw cups? I'm not entirely sure what you mean.
We've been struggling with this stupid spout cup that I bought, and I was worried about this too.

IMHO, I don't think there's much truth to it. I've heard folks say that, but I've never seen anything scientific to back it up. I think kids develop at their own pace, and the tiny part of the day that they spend sucking on a cup probably doesn't impact that. My DS still uses the non-spill sippy cups at 26 mo and always has, and his verbal skills have been above average since the start and his pronunciation is normal for a 2 yr old. Just my 2 cents.

When do people usually stop using the sippy cup and move on to a regular cup anyhow?

Please post a link to somewhere that sells the cups with straws. I think I know what sort you mean but am not entirely sure. Bec can drink out of a big person cup, but has to be supervised at all times. She likes to drink a little cold tea out of my cup. She could'nt do that if she was in the car or something though as it would go everywhere. There are so many "dos and don'ts" that you can get a little dazed and confused over this "good" parenting lark! *phew*

Bexmummy, here is the AVENT straw type cup http://www.avent.com/uk/en/toddlerfeeding_magic_sportster.php and here is the tommee tippee one http://www.tommeetippee.co.uk/shop/product.php?productid=143&cat=32&page=1
HTH's
A word of advice from Tomme Tippe Website
* Babies will naturally learn to clamp their mouths around a spout
* Breast fed babies adapt most easily as the action mimics latching on to the breast. Using a sipping action, they draw the liquid up the spout
* Bottle-fed babies may take longer to adapt. But once they learn the technique, they will drink without sucking. This will help to protect their teeth.

Hiya
we used non-spill sippy cups and never a had problem with Ciara's speech.
We have also tried the avent straw cup which is in the link above. I didn't like it as it spilled everywhere and we took it back to boots. Ciara uses a normal cup or tumbler in the house but also has the straw flasks which the straw folds down in the lid. These are hygienic and spill proof whether the lid is open or closed. We have tonnes of these and get them from next, toysrus or woolies.
I can take a pic and post if the description is unclear!

just wanted to add ... the flask cups are quite big so woudn't be appropriate for younger toddlers/babies to hold

Thank you for your replies everyone! Sorry I've not been back sooner but Bec's been a bit poorly and it's taken some time to get back to normal again. I'll give some of the other cup types a try to see which suits her best. She's not big into using the non-spill sippy cup anyway :) A change might encourage her to drink a bit more each day.

shoot, I just bought a bunch of really cute sippy cups. I definitely will not have her on them forever.
