Title: more formula out than in?

Hi All,

Sometimes while I am feeding my LO, the formula pours out the sides of his mouth.  It doesn't happen at every meal.  What causes this?  It almost like he forgot how to swallow sometimes.  Anyone else have this problem?

What size nipple are you using? My initial thought was the flow might be too fast, so he dribbles.

He is using stage one nipples, playtex advance.  He is only 6 weeks old and like I said it is not all the time.  I just feed him again and he only dribbled this time, but sometimes iflows right out or spurts out the sides.

Perhaps its the shape of the nipple?  Is it the natural shape playtex nipples you are using?  Or perhaps the non-silicone kind work better?  Sounds like he isn't getting a good latch on the nipples.  I use the Playtex Natural Shape nipples and I find they work great with my LO.

Also my friend was using the same kind as me but her LO was having a latching problem and had to switch to those brown coloured nipples...latex is it?  Not sure what they are called.

I agree with the previous poster, sounds like a latch on problem. You could try a few differerent nipples to see. You should be able to use the same bottles, just try some different nipples.

I used to have this all the time with William when he was tiny. I used to say that it would be easier just to pour his milk all over him as he was getting soaked through and hardly drank anything!
I soon found out that it was certainy a latching problem - I was using avent bottles and teats and the teat was too hard for him so he couldnt latch to it. When I changed to the Dr Browns / Bfree bottles with their lovely soft teats the driblling of milk went and he didnt need changing after every feed!
