Title: An example of how to use the new Growth Charts Announced by WHO
Post by: luckyb52 on May 13, 2006, 07:39:25 am
Jennifer2e:

First we convert Grayson’s data into the metric system.

His height is 25.25 inches in the Imperial system.
Therefore his height in centimeters (i.e., ‘cm’) is = 25.25 x  2.54 =  64 cm
Converting this to meters (i.e., ‘m’), we get 0.64 m.

His weight is 16 lbs.
Therefore his weight in kilograms (i.e., ‘kg’) is = 16 divided by 2.2 =  7.3 kg

Body Mass Index (BMI) = (Weight in kg) divided by (height in meters x  height in meters) = 7.3 divided by (0.64 x 0.64) = 7.3 divided by 0.41 = 17.8

To check whether he is under/overweight, we look at the Body Mass Index (BMI) chart.

Move along the horizontal axis at the bottom (the Age axis) until you come to his age, which is 7 months (that’s between ‘6’ and ‘8’).

Now move directly upwards until you are in line with our calculated BMI, i. e. 17.8  (on the vertical axis at left, the BMI axis). You will see that LO is very near the central black curve, which is the average (this curve is called the ‘zero’ curve. There is a zero in green next to it on the vertical axis at the right to denote this. It represents normal BMI).

Grayson is therefore almost a perfect average. He is neither over nor under weight. His size is near ideal, and you should keep doing whatever you are doing.

Congratulations on your wonderful score!

Cheers

I have been EBF for over 7 months and I'm so proud of that ;)

I asked because my Dr.( >:() told me he had fallen off the growth chart for height and wieght was in the 15%.  She said if it didn't change she would discuss "what to do" next time I brought him in.  Since he is my third I know she is full of crap and didn't listen but I saw this new chart and was curious.  It makes me feel better knowing I'm right and he is just great.  My husband and I are not tall so he dosen't have that in his genes ;)

Thanks so much for doing that for me!!!
