Title: milk dribble during feeding
Post by: macsmum on May 23, 2006, 15:05:53 pm
my son 4months constantly dribbles milk from his mouth whilst feeding this started when i changed him to medium flow teats as he was falling asleep on the slow flow ones during his feed does any one else have this problem, he has reflux is there a connection?

it will take a bit of time for him to get used to the bigger size teats , i don't think there is a connection with reflux , he just need to get used to the milk coming out faster.

that is what i thought but he has been on medium flow since he was 6 days old as the midwife told me to change them because he was not taking enough formula due to being too tired to suck,
he splutters milk as well who ever feeds him ends up wearing the milk too.

we changed to medium flow shortly after we left the hospital for the same reasons  , the milk wasn't coming fast enough and because he was so little he was getting tired of sucking , it took him a while to get used to the faster flow .

i could be wrong but i don't think there is anything you can do for the dribbling of milk , he will either be a dribbler or get used to the faster flow.the spit up is obviously his reflux, even on meds Ryan still spit up a lot

yes MacKenzie is on meds for his reflux sometimes he spits up after feeds other times he doesn't, just wonder how long this will continue.

What brand of bottles/teats do you use?  My dd was a dribbler at first until we figured out she couldn't handle the Avent bottles. We went with Gerber Nuk and haven't had a problem since. Just an idea.

funny that cos we r using avent bottles and teats and come to think of it when i thought it was colic not reflux i used an anti colic bottle and teat and he didn't dribble at all, i wonder if its the shape of the teats, will explore this and let you know,
thank you

i didn't think about that ,Ryan didn't drink well out of the avent bottles either .they were too wide and they seem to have a short teat

What I've found from talking to moms and also lactation consultants was that the Avent people have done a remarkable job with their advertising.  In fact, what the professionals told me was that the Avent teats are too hard and often too large for a baby, especially younger babies, to handle, as they don't have the oral-motor control to close their mouths around the teat to prevent leaking.  I searched this on the web and you would not believe how many people out there have found the same thing with the Avent bottles. I'm sure they are great for some, but certainly they are not the be all end all they make you believe.  Good luck and let me know how it goes.

well its like magic, bought some wide neck medium flow teats (boots own) and guess what? yep no more milk dribble, chuck away the event ones, thats what i say.

funny though cos the boots ones look the same just the tip of the teat is rounded not square like the avent ones.

thank you all for the help, one problem down one to go? ;D

calums mum,the pack just says wide neck medium flow silicone 3 months plus, but says specially designed for colic.

MacKenzie did great with the first size avent teats but when changed to med flow dribble started, have kept the bottles though.
another question for those using avent teats and bottles sometimes when i made the bottles when i shaked them the milk started to leak and i had to re fasten the teat, anyone else had that problem?

we use boots own latex teats too and they are great . had a hard time getting them for a while though , the fast flow seemed to dissappear off the shelves for a while , good job we were stocked up .
