Title: What is going on??
Post by: lizjackson on May 23, 2006, 18:52:50 pm
I have been nursing for 5 months now and have had no trouble with infections or any other problems with my breasts.  About 1 week ago I noticed that all around my nipple it is bright pink and very tender.  It will then get very dry.  I put lanolin on it, but it is not seeming to help.  Anyone else dealt with this?  What is causing it?  Thank you

Are you experiencing any pain while nursing that feel 'deep down' in your breast or noticing any white patches in your LOs mouth or nappy area (obviously I'm thinking about thrush as a possibility here)?

Could also be eczema or an allergic reaction to something - especially if it's very dry. You could try using olive oil on the area as that is usually safe for baby and very helpful for dry skin. Talk to a pharmacist about dry skin treatments that are safe if you don't want to bother your doctor yet.

no pain "deep down".  She has really started to pull on me lately, and I wondered if I was just getting a rash or dry area where she was latching on harder and pulling on me.  I will try the olive oil.  It will be really red and sore after she feeds and then just gets dry and the skin around my nipple is flakey..??  Weird, huh..Did this ever happen to you?

liz are you having any itching? I agree w/Samuel's mum re: trying the olive oil; the other thing to try (if you have time) is to leave that breast exposed after nursing for a few min. - kind of air-drying out the skin - don't worry about wiping off any milk that remains, it's actually good for the skin. Worst case scenario, you can try some OTC hydrocortisone cream to the area, especially if you're having itching...it's safe for baby...just put it on after nursing so there's plenty of time for it to absorb prior to the next feeding (and won't smell or taste funny to your lo!) the irritation is likely due to her pulling.

No, It hasn't happened to me personally although I do get dry patches. If it's really sore and you continue to be worried check with your doctor.
Good Luck.

Yes, it is very itchy!!!  I felt gross saying that.  Sometimes I probably make it worse scratching it.. and it is not just the area around the nipple but my nipple too!!  Did you have this problem??  I am going to try both the olive oil and get some hydrocortisone cream tomorrow.  Thank you ladies for your help, I did not want to have to explain that one to my doctor, hopefully these ideas work.

Yes, it is very itchy!!!     and it is not just the area around the nipple but my nipple too!!

Intense itchiness with the flaking is not a good sign.  Check out this website to see if it might be thrush.

really??  She does not seem to have any problems..  Would she be reacting funny if this was what was going on?  When she gets up from her nap I am going to look at her mouth again. I am worried now..

Keep an eye on it and call if you think it's not getting better and especially if it appears to be thrush.

If you're really worried than just call...it won't hurt.

Liz I got a great website from one of the moderator's, Samuel's mum, that has an excellent article about yeast on the breast - how to tell if it is, what to do, etc. Typically a candida infection of the breast also causes pain, not just itching/flakiness....check it out and see if you have similar symptoms, then it might be worth a call to the doc. How are things going anyway? Any improvement?

Here's the site....http://www.thebirthden.com/Newman.html

It also has lots of other great breastfeeding articles in general.....
