Title: Going great and now...problems
Post by: ladyscott on June 01, 2006, 11:32:01 am
I don't get it.  My son 9 weeks, corrected age 4 weeks, was nursing great!  For the past 3 days now, he suckles for 3 to 5 minutes, suddenly pulls off the breast and starts screaming and crying.  It's a fight to get him back on.  I burp him, change him, cuddle him and try to get him to stop arching his back and screaming.  I try to get him to eat, and he won't, but acts like he's hungry.

After I finally calm him down, he'll have a fitful nap in which he keeps waking up and fussing and won't sleep very long.  Consequently, he's hungry again 2 hours after the previous feed and once again he starts the crying and fussing.

My let down isn't as strong as it was, so he's not having problems with that.  In fact, he nurses right through the letting down of the milk, but once it stops, he's off, screaming.  He also yanks on my nipples.  I'll "milk" my breast to make sure there's milk coming in, and it squirts or dribbles out.

I don't think it's a growth spurt because he just went through one.

His diapers are wet every feeding, but he has reduced drastically in the number of dirty diapers a day.  He has around 2, but I read that's still adequate.

So, what's with this screaming, crying, kicking and back arching that occurs at each feeding and lasts nearly into the next feeding?

Have you tried nursing while laying down?  This helps slow the gravitational pull of a fast letdown (wow, I sound like a scientist or something  ;))

Also, try doing bicycle legs with him to work out any wind or gas.  Maybe even some gripe water could help.

And don't worry too much about dirty diapers, it's nothing for breastfed babies to change their dirty diaper schedule drastically and start going a week at a time inbetween or more.
