My DD is 13 mos - and we were done weaning 1 1/2 weeks ago. I did a VERY slow transition: at 9months, was down to 3x/day, 10 months was 2x/day, 11 months, once/day. She was hardly drinking at all during the one bf/day by the time she wa 12 mos - just a couple minutes.
The past week & a half I've hardly had any fullness (I'm assuming due to the slow wean transition & the fact that she was hardly drinking any milk at the end). This morning, however, I noticed some lumps - more on one side than the other - under the nipples & on the one side, above the nipple. :-[ They're very tender to the touch. Is this normal? Anything I should do about it? If it is normal, how long does it typically last?
Thanks for any info!

When I weaned my first I remember some hardness... just like engorgement in certain areas... it went away after a couple of days.

I think give it 24 hours and see how you are. 'Very tender' doesn't sound great. That could be 'painful' for someone else. You obviously took care to be gradual. If I were you I would get a doctor to take a look if it's still 'very tender' tomorrow.
Blocked ducts are normally associated with one larger 'lump'/mass. However I would still try massaging above and around the area - use gentle sweeping motions. You could also try applying a hot wet clean flannel.
Are the lumps a whitish colour or just normal skin colour?

Thanks Amanda & Samuel's Mum for the responses!
They're a normal skin color. I haven't done massage yet, because they're so tender to the touch that it hurts. I'll give it a try though....

hiya-i had major lumpy boobs after weaning, esp on teh left. I had a very hard nodule nad i knew it was a duct because one day I sucked up the courage and pushed in on it (OWIEEE) and i did have some leaking. I was quite lumpy and bumpy for a few weeks actually. then one day, they were back to normal (relatively speaking bc they shrunk!!)
;D

Thanks Lola for sharing your experience too!
Well, I took a hot shower this morning & tried massaging a little (but it really hurt!) - after I got out I pumped less than a minute on each side. The lumps are now gone! :D Now, I just hope they don't come back... Anyone who pumped/got the milk out, recall if lumps came back? I'm worried about the stimulation, but I couldn't stand the pain any more!!

I had some really big un's. I tried very hard not to press on them bc i got milkage! Was trying not to do that so I just put on a tight bra and grinned and beared it! ;D
