Title: Will I always be lopsided?
Post by: Cory'stiredmommy on June 27, 2006, 19:04:56 pm
I was hoping that I didn't need to ask this question.... but now it is troubling me! I have been bf'ing for 8.5 months and I have always had 1 boob that makes more milk. I have tried to nurse more on the lower producing side but it seems like we are in a vicious cycle. It never has enough.. we go to the other side... and in the end, My 1 boob produces more than the other.
I know this is normal... but I am tired of feeling/looking lopsided and more so a little scared that after I stop breastfeeding,
THEY WON"T RETURN TO SIMILAR SIZES!
Does anyone have some experience in this area?
Cory's mommy!

Hi,

I am in the same situation, my left boob is prepregnancy size while the right one is big BIG! I have heard different opinions so I am not sure. One is that your boob will return to its original size after you are done with nursing. The other one is not as optimistic, it basically says that it may return to its size but will never look the same, it may actually be less supple.

To be honest, I was also obsessing about the size and how lopsided I am but I got over it at some point. I used to add an extra pad in my left bra to make them look even but now I don't. I know I am lopsided but I also know it is more in my mind because when I asked my friends they didn't notice the difference until I asked them. I keep thinking that the boobs are for my children and they were made for that purpose so I feel better about it.

I had one boob a LOT bigger than the other all the way through BFing. After a month after weaning they did return to the same size again - both small LOL.

Cory's mommy:
You don't need to reduce milk in the over-producing side - you need to increase it in the other one! Try pumping on that one after every feed. Then at the next feed you can offer that first in the bottle before putting Cory back on the under-producing side. Or if he doesn't take a bottle you can mix it with his rice cereal  ;D
This happened to me three weeks after Kieran was born. I actually had a blocked duct (didn't know it at the time) and my left boob shrank. After a couple of days of frantic pumping and hardly anything come out, whoosh! sudden gush of milk. Took another couple of days for boobs to normalise but now they're OK - massive, but at least equally so!  :P They really were awful though, I didn't want to go out because I was SO lopsided. I actually had three bosoms - one normal sized one and one divided in two because it was overflowing my bra! ;D

Best of luck,
Cath

I too had lopsided boobs - I'd just like to asure you that mine, at least, did indeed return to sinilar sizes once I'd given up BF.  I can't remeber how long it took though, but they're certainly the same now, and have got back to their pre-BF size (they were much smaller initially after stopping BF)  ;D

Thanks everyone. This is all very helpful! So far I have started focusing more attention on my right (Cory drinkns there first) and I am hoping this will help balance everything out... It is also good to know this "should" go back to normal!
