hi everyone
i am not happy with my avent bottles. occasionally they have leaked but once i opened and shut them up again they were fine, i just thought it was me not threading the lids on properly. well last night while doing my ds bottles i could not seem to get any of the lids on properly when i shook the mik up they would leak i tried several times but still leaking. i was tired so decided i would just rethread as i needed them.
so 530 this morning gets bottle, rethreads, leaks tryed again by this ds crying for his bottle. tryed to feed him and because the lids are not on properly the colic prevention system did not appear to be working i could not hear the funny noise and milk was pouring out i kept trying to rethread much to my sons annoyance, so i had to just let the milk leak all over. so now he has tummy ache and did not have all his ounces as that went all over him and me.
not happy.
i have other bottle types which i bought ages ago when trying out different bottles. will my ds take to a new bottle?? i really do not want to be buying avent again. anyone else had this trouble. maybe its just me i could not screw a wing nut on my toilet seat yesterday maybe i am the problem. xxx

One trick I got from here from someone who got it from the Avent website was to tighten the lids too tight and then back up and re-try. In my case, anyway, it worked as I basically needed to find the place between "leaking because it's not tight enough" and "leaking because it's too tight."

Don't get me started about Avent bottles!!!
I had such a disasterous time with them that I have banished them all to the loft!
When I used avent bottles no matter how hard I tried to screw them up properly they used to allow milk to pour down the bottle all over me and all over William. He used to end up soaked through after a feed and needed changing. The milk also used to end up all frothy as the so called anti colic feature channelled all of the air through the milk.. so William's colic and wind actually got worse!
Finally the teats were so hard that poor Will coudn't latch on properly and milk would dribble right out of his mouth and again all over him.
I used to joke that instead of battling to feed him it would be easier just to tip the milk all over him!
I changed bottles to Dr Browns (B-free) and instantly we had no leaking, no dribbling and far less wind.
I know its expensive but for your sanity I would change bottles xxx

When I used Avent bottles with Tyler, I called the manufacturer to see what the deal was with the leaky bottles. They said it helped to put the bottles together wet...put the nipple in the ring, wet the threads of the ring with some water, then screw it on the bottle. I thought I also remembered something about assembling them with the caps on to create a vacuum too, but it's been awhile. Could be wrong!

I wasn't impressed with the avent bottles either. I thought they would work because my SIL uses them with her babies and she loves them. DS hated them! I think it was because the wide base made it hard for him to suckle. I thought after having trouble breastfeeding him from the breast that this may happen. I could never get him to latch on. So I would pump and that's how he got breast milk for the first 3 weeks of his life. Well, anyone who pumps knows that can get old. So I got my avent bottles out and put the breast milk in them. Didn't work.
We then went to Dr. Brown, and while I love them I noticed last week they were mildewy so you really have to work hard at cleaning them. But they never leaked and helped prevent as much gas. I always seemed to have 2 or 3 avent caps that leaked really bad. So now I'm in the process of getting all the Dr. Brown parts really clean before using them again. In the meantime I'm using the Playtex Ventair bottles and plain old gerber ones, and you know what, they are working just fine. So I've got about 3 brands of bottles in my cabinet right now! :( I should have just stuck with playtex or gerber. Sigh, it's always hit or miss. What works for one person, doesn't for another. But if your LO is having problems with colic or reflux or is a gassy baby I would highly recommend Dr. Brown bottles.

There must be a lot of problems with avent bottles as there is a question about them leaking in the FAQ's on the avent website:
Why does my AVENT Feeding Bottle sometimes leak?
Leaking from underneath the locking ring of the AVENT Bottle most often occurs when the 'skirt' in the base of the AVENT teat is not in the correct position. Try the following steps:
1) Pull the teat through the locking ring until it clicks into place. Then put the dome cap firmly on to the locking ring. Screw the assembled top section onto the bottle.
2) Check that the top section has not been over-tightened. This can distort or trap the anti-colic skirt which will not allow the proper operation of the one-way valve.
3) Wet the base of the teat before pulling the teat through the locking ring. This will ensure that the skirt will slip easily into place inside the neck of the bottle and form a seal.
4) Ensure formula powder is not present on the inside top ¼” of the bottle.
5) Avoid over tightening, of the top section, screw cap, teat & dome cover onto the bottle base.

When ds was a baby I started with Avent too and they LEAKED! Drove me crazy. So we switched to bottles that I had on hand from my shower -very cheap - Evenflo! No leaks and ds liked them just fine. Good Luck!

Thanks for posting those! Someone else had posted them about the time I was having trouble with them and that helped fix our issues. :)

the exact same thing happened to me with my silly avent bottles! i have four avent bottles (or should i say had!!??!!) and every now and then it would leak like absolute crazy, and i finally figured out that one combination of the bottle/ring and teet were faulty when put together, but as i had four of the exact same bottles it was always just luck of the draw to see which one was going to spray all over me when i shook up the formula!! it was usually when i was the most tiredtoo..and would end up with formula all over me and the kitchen floor. i persisted with them for awhile because they were so expensive but have now switched to a cheaper brand from target and he likes them just fine! :D :D

NUK bottles don't leak... I love them, so does DS

I bought five different types of bottles and nipples ::) to see which one M would use..she ended up only liking the cheap one-playtex drop in's.
I got Avent bottles free from my work; guessing now it's a good thing she didn't like them ;)

Dh and I bought the whole advent kit, 8 40z bottles, 8 90z bottles, steralizer and bottle warmer, I thought they would be great. So for the first 4 months of my poor dd life she had gas issues, reflux, tummy aches etc. and we couldnt figure out why, finally after another trip to the emergency ward the doc suggested trying a different bottle. We went with original playtex bottles with the drop ins and it cured her overnight it was amazing. I was to stubborn to try a new bottle before because we spent so much money on the advent, boy do i feel guil;ty now. The advents are now all sitting in the garage. they are a waste of money and overpriced.

I too dug out the avent bottles for my son (our dd refused them). He has excepted them but he is often very fitful during his feeding and will only take 3 to 4 oz per feeding. He is 3 months and 16 lbs so I know that he would be very capable to sleep through the night if I could only get him to take more during the day. Could this be a bottle problem? I hadn't even thought about that. Although I'd hate to spend money on different bottles only to have the problem continue.

Have you checked out this post? it may help you. :-\

I bought and tried for his last feeding - Playtex Avance. He seemed to be more content with this type of venting system but I really don't like the bottle style - mixing formula separately and him not being able to hold his bottle when he's older. He also leaked like a sieve, I even used the slow flow. Is this because of the smaller nipple? None of the stores in town sell the Dr. Browns that everyone seems to rave about and I don't want to invest more $ in a bottle that he might not take too. Any thoughts or advice?

We love NUK bottles too :D

They are great, aren't they? Wonderful shape (DS never had nipple confusion or didn't want the bottle, so is that bottle confusion ??? ), easy to use, easy to clean... Never leaked either. And DS never had bad wind, ever... that anti-colic-system seems to work.

Which NUK bottles are you using. With our dd we used Gerber bottles with NUK ortho nipples but I've never actually seen a NUK bottle in stores here.

I'm with you. I HATE Avent solid bottles. They leak sooooo bad and they also cause a LOT of gas and discomfort for my DD so we wont be using them next time around.
The Disposables however are not bad at all, no leaks and less gas and fast flow for when she got older. I bought the sippy cup nipple converter for my disposables and DD will FINALLY take a sippy cup!!

we use the wide neck bottles (not standard teats). I have only had good experiences with them, but only with the silicone teats... Although latex is better for the transfer from nipple to bottle but afterwards I would switch to silicone because it lasts longer and doesn't "collapse" while sucking

I had the same problem with the Advent bottles, leaking all the time until a friend told me that in the instructions it mentions not to screw them on tight only screw them on firm. The bottles are made in such a way that they allow a certain amount of air into the bottle when the LO is drinking, however when they are screwed on too tight air cannot get in and they leak.
-
Oh no! You all are worrying me! My LO has been on the Playtex drop-ins since 2 1/2 weeks of life and I just decided to switch to Avent. No reason other than we got tired of purchasing the drop-in liners. I have noticed though that it's harder for him to burp with the Avent bottles but it could be something else.
