Okay, I know I should be grateful that he has gone 9 mo without any kind of cold, but now my lo has a stuffy nose and he keeps popping off the breast because he can't breathe. What can we do? He's obviously hungry, but can't breathe while nursing.

Sarah,
So sorry ds is not feeling well. Perhaps this link will offer some good tips. :-*

Sarah-
We had luck using the nasal aspirator (aka, the "snot sucker" as we called it) before nursing. It's tough at 9 months because they really fight it, but it would clear up her nose enough to be able to eat. Try nursing with his head as upright as you can get it too -- think about how when you lay down with a cold, your nose get stuffier.

When Tom was like this the doctor prescribed saline drops they really helped not that pleasant at first but it worked HTH

The saline and the syringe are what worked for us.
Hope he feels better soon!! :-*

Saline & snot sucker, here, too. Sometimes it took both dh & I to do it though. :-\ Just a bit of warning.

Best thing is the humidifier with eucalyptus drops (less intense than the vicks). Works in minutes, I swear.

Like PP said, eucalyptus drops are great -- be careful to avoid the Vicks stuff that you add to the humidifier since it has camphor in it which is very bad for babies (don't remember the details, just remember you're not supposed to use it). The Vicks baby rub is ok for babies (obviously).

Thanks for all the replies. I actually nursed him standing holding him upright today. he nursed better than all the other times today, however, at 21 lbs, not going to happen every session. I did notice propping him up has helped.
Saline-does it have to be prescription or do they sell OTC? Do you need something special for babies vs adults?
As for the eucalyptus drops, where can you get those? Just your basic pharmacy?
thanks again!

Saline you can get OTC and I don't think it is different kids vs adults.... look in the cold alsie
-
A health food store may be your best bet for the eucalyptus drops.

In Canada there are nose drops for babies, they are OTC, I dont think there is much differenct from the adult ones though. I got mine at Shoppers Drug Mart.
As for the eucalyptus drops, I got them at Zellers if you can believe it. I know they also have them at the health food store (checked when I was buying the teething tablets, oh my).
HTH

Thansk for all yoru help. His cold is gone, hooray, and we learned how to nurse more or less upright, so that helped a lot.
