Title: help--sore, red nips!
Post by: Stargrl on September 29, 2006, 03:26:46 am
hi there, I was wondering if anyone has any tips for me? My baby is 7-months old, and has 4 teeth (2 top, 2 bottom).  Since he teethed, my nipples have been relatively sore, but not horrible. He doesn't bite, but I sort of think that his saliva is harsher when he's teething. Anyways, he's getting 2 more teeth in, and my nipples hurt so bad! I got eczema on them once when he was 2-months old, and it looks like it's back, and it's been very painful to nurse. Has anyone had problems when baby is teething, and what have you done? thanks!

hi ther,
just happend tome a wek ago.. though baby has no teeth, and after calling "la leche" and other moms for help.. this is what made the pain easier and go away (and now I do it as prevention...):
1. one table spoon of regular vinigar inone glass of watter- clean nips with cloth or cotton wool... this is to disinfect whatever is there... it sounds gross but is not that bad!
2. Do compresses for the breasts: I took a small towel in hot watter and just press against the breat for a few seconds, then on the other and so on for 3-4 times. it really relaxes them.
3. while talking a shower, let the ot water run on breasts and squeeze with your hands towards to nips, just as a massage..
4. last but not least.. after cleaning the nips.. I always rub some olive oil (sounds gross but is not! I used it as a body oil when pregnant! use the light OO) on nips OR your baby's Vitamin A+D. it gives some moist and its therapudic!
Sorry for the spelling... i know I have mistakes, but am in a rush!!

thanks, I'll definitely give it a try. I really don't want to use the steroid cream the doc recommended  :-\ The olive oil sounds good!

What about using some Lansinoh?  I used that during the first few months of nursing and it helped soooo much! I had cracked nipples and it helped with healing AND it was o.k. to nurse with the cream on.

Lansinoh is amazing!  I would highly recommend getting it.  A very small amount goes a very long way and it is completely safe for baby too!  It actually use to help Carter when he would get sucking blisters on his lips as well as help sore teeth-abused nipples!

I hope you feel better soon!

The same thing happened to me about two weeks ago, also when ds had just turned 7 months old. He also had 4 teeth and one coming out(which is out now). I wasnt sure if it was the teething that did it, but it was so painful, I really know how you feel. You know, the lansinoh did help, but I just kind of waited it out and it dissappeared on its own. Good luck!

p.s. it's encouraging to hear that it resolved on its own, newmommy21. Hopefully I don't have long! His next little tooth is right below the surface.

I have this problem when my lo is teething.  I realized that it is because he is massaging his gums on me--but I don't realize it while he's doing it.  I try to pay more attention to his latch on--make sure he's close enough to my body and also minimize comfort sucking at the end of the feed--I think that's when he does it most.

well I just wanted to update you guys, I found out today that my LO has thrush! His daddy was holding him up above his head and he was laughing and I could see right into his mouth-- he's got thrush on the inside of his cheeks and a little on his tongue. I feel so dumb for not realizing it sooner! ::) Anyways, I have the thrush medicine from back when I *thought* I had thrush but didn't, and they wanted to just treat his mouth anyways. I also started acidophillus for both of us, and will start doing the vinegar rinses like Anna P suggested. Thrush is lame, but at least I figured out what the problem is! now just waiting for my nips to start feeling better...
